Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 34K miles*

You are absolutely not “super weird” to want to be alone. I was born and raised in Carmel and Big Sur in 1946 and its hard for me to go back because there are now soo many cars and people. My mother and father knew John Steinbeck and Henry Miller and we lived on a ranch on the side of a mountain above the little Hamlet of Lucia. When you pulled out your copy of Chekov’s short stories that really caught my attention because that was one of my Dad’s favorite books. You are an amazing person and I’m so glad That I stumbled upon your site.

Wow what a small world. That is pretty wild that your parents knew them. Steinbeck’s ‘Travels with Charley’ is one of the first books that really sparked my interest around living on the road

Congrats on your 100k award, a milestone in this journey we are glad to be on with you. I look at what you’re doing as providing a service to your viewers who for a variety of reasons enjoy your storytelling and video magic! I chose to build my stable home life with my family first when I was young as that was my priority over traveling, a very close second mind you, I could have just as easily chosen to be an adventurer documenting the “Wonders of the World” out on my own. Having lived my dream I’m proud of the life I have lived and my accomplishments over the years. My children and grandchildren are stable very grounded individuals full of a passion for life. My point is to say everyone has their own priorities in life I believe in doing what brings a light to your eyes whatever that looks like. So for me seeing this amazing world through your eyes is such a blessing because some places I know I’ll never see in person. I’m forever grateful for the time and energy you spend bring the world to my doorstep. Thank you Christian, stay safe and enjoy these moments. Why is it that the sounds in nature are not annoying but everything man made is disturbing to the soul. Noise noise noise lol. 😊✌️💫

I've watched all of your videos but for this one, I realate on almost everything. Always been unable to stand people and modern life for too much. Since day 1. Energy draining. And after 30 it intensified. I also relate on the end of a long relation for external reasons (she moved far for work after 7 years). Last, the sadness of rainy season and the urge to be in a open, sunny, natural place. Where I live we have these beautiful sunny springs and summers and then it suddently becomes dark, humid, and rainy for months. I usually find myself alone in the car and it literally brings me to the coast. Sun, open space and waves brings the peace back. So keep going sister. Do what makes you feel good and stop doing what makes you feel sad. Simple as that. You're not alone. Cheers from Italy. Take care

congratulations on your 100k subscriber award. well done! I don't comment often, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your uploads. Watching solo female travellers is a heartening experience, and so different from person to person, but please believe me when I say that you are a comfort and hope to me if I am ever left solo at any point. I no longer have fears about travelling alone and filling the remainder of my life with wonderful (and challenging) experiences on the road. My OH's first grandchild is on its way, but definitely want to do some part-time van travel to the places we stumbled on with our previous partners. We both adore California (we're British, but my OH was based there for 3 years). Meanwhile, 2022 will hopefully bring about our relocation to an off-grid stix n brix, which is our first imperative before travelling again. All the very best for next year. Merry Christmas!

Christian, I have to tell you, these videos are nothing short of fantastic. It gives us such Kerouac and Alex Supertramp vibes, and it's nothing short of amazing. It's really living the American dream, open road up ahead in front of you, your whole life in a van, looking out for experience, because that's all you really want and need. Amazing, I hope one day I'll get to make these memories you're making now, and live that kind of free spirit life. This video reminded me of a song, "A long December", by Counting Crows. It has a similar theme to the song, a desire for something better after a complicated past. I think the song and this video really match. By the way, I am an Italian who grew up around Americans in the military stationed in Italy, so since you mentioned living in Italy, I assume you were here because of your ex being in the military. It must have taken a lot of courage to be vulnerable, so thank you for sharing and being vulnerable with us. Take care, stay strong, and we cannot wait to see more of your life on the road :)

Loved the ocean shots coupled with the song choice around the 5:00 minute mark and used again around the 14:00 minute mark. Just beautiful. Could've watched/listened to that longer. Don't recall how long I've been following you, but I do remember that you were in a relationship that didn't work out before you made this lifestyle choice. But listening to your need for freedom and solitude, it makes complete sense that a relationship with someone in the military would prove challenging because it's a such a structured and regimented life. You should be proud of yourself for taking that step into the unknown. That takes great courage. And congrats on the recognition for the 100K.

I came across your channel and watched some old videos. There was something about you I felt I understood, and then I noticed you had a copy of Walden on your bookshelf in one of your earlier videos, in fact the same edition I have sitting on mine. This book had an insanely significant impact on me when I read it at around 20 (I'm 32 now), one of the best books ever written that I turn to in dark times and manages to put into words my feelings about life like no-one ever has before or since. I feel more connected to a guy living in a shack in 1850 than I do to people around me today. All the best for your future travels, both on the road and within your own mind too.

@@ChristianSchaffer , born in Watsonville (1/2 way between SC and Monterey in '62). Yeah, it WAS beautiful and to some extent area still is, but not even close to how uncrowded it used to be, especially beaches.

New subscriber here. Your van tour reeled me in, your chill and open attitude got me intrigued, and then that shot looking out your window with the sun flooding in convinced me to subscribe 😀

I don’t know why I started watching, but the cinematography is great, you’re beautiful, and you are helping a guy who has been on the road in a semi truck believe again in road life. If you’re ever in the southeast or Midwest, let me know. Safe travels.

I live in Bulgaria. It's already so cold and windy here. I miss the sun and the sea so much and this is just the beginning of winter. I soak all the views and the ocean. Loved it 💙

On a rare trip to the west coast, I once spent a couple weeks exploring the PCH from Santa Barbara to Tijuana. I've never taken the PCH further north than Santa Barbara. That stretch from SB to San Fran looks absolutely amazing! It's on the short list! Thanks for a gorgeous glimpse of what I have to look forward to. Your presentation skills are so enviable! Talent! 😊 Thanks, as always, for sharing your adventures!!

Christian, This video was great. I always love your videos because they are always peaceful and calming yet adventurous and inspiring but this one had a more candid feeling. I love the chuck taylor sand dump.," cookies for bfast and that's okay". also i love the sounds in this video. crashing waves the bass of the truck passing the van.

Loved the feel of the story telling with no words and musics, I could really feel the "give me space" vibe. I get creative when im in a mood like that and I found watching yours was refreshing as it made me feel less guilty when I want to shut the world out. I have a day very week when I dont interact with the people in my life and its my mental health and photography day. I call it time lapse thursday. In australia where i live instead of the rain its the sun that can be just too much sometimes and was jealous of the rainy days in washington you experienced. I think this was my favorite episode of yours. And happy new year. :)

I feel like I can smell the ocean and feel the sunshine when I watch your videos. I can't wait to be heading west in a few months. Been thinking hard about home basing out of Nevada for it being blue, tax free and geocentralized to all the places I want to travel to. Ford Transit because its AWD. However I have two Chiweenie dogs and I want this to be a good experience for them too. Ichabod gets car sick. Thanks for another wonderful video Christian.

Congratulations on the 100k! You are a superb videographer and your scenery shots are some of the best I've seen here on KZfaq. I got a laugh out of saying you were looking for some quiet since the quietest place I think I've ever been is a small camp ground I went to to stargaze about 20-30 minutes past Ojai (coming from Ventura) when I was on a trip out there. I could literally hear a mosquito from about 30 feet away.
