I delayed watching this video until my mood improved; I wanted to enjoy this sharing of timepieces. This video was well worth the wait. Thanks for bringing it to us.

Two days, two videos, this is wonderland. Yesterday I was quite sad, the video was too short and there was not the typical "see you real soon". But here we are today, with a great great video. Thanks so much. I love vintage watches. Is in the vintages where the quality of the "swiss made" is demostrated. 70 years old watches looking like new stock

Beautiful works; I always end up appreciating the simple pieces the most. I'm conversely also a fan of pieces with detailed colorful enameling and wish we'd see more of that.

Another stainless-steel Day-Date went up for auction recently; it was a prototype, given as a gift to an engineer involved in the development of the then-new Day-Date caliber in the 1970s.

Throughout the video I was just wondering why the auctioneer is wearing that combination of colors and patterns… I came to the conclusion that possibly a fire had destroyed everything else in his wardrobe and suddenly I was overwhelmed with respect for his dedication. He showed up to work on the day of the fire since he didn’t have time to go fetch anything else from the store!

what is slightly disappointing is when you refer to the Christie's catalogue of some of these pieces, in particular the Patek - some of the markings and patina to the hands seems to have been manipulated out of the catalogue picture.

I'd argue the best of 19th century watchmaking was a little farther west than Geneva...
@WATCHESTVcom

And you are quite right! English and French watchmaking was still very important at that time...

I was thinking farther west still. American watchmaking. People always forget that there was a time where American watches were the most precise scientific instruments of the time.

"many secrets of watchmaking are lost to these day" Usual salesman bullshit. Nothing is lost, production volumes just modified a lot of industrial processes and production, but we wouldn't have any problems producing high end enamel dials today for god's sake. Modernhigh end production timepieces are much more complex, well finished and well crafted than anything vintage.

You handcraft a cloisonné box...maybe it sells for 1 or 2 thousand...BUT if you make a cloisonné dial and put it on a Rolex it becomes 150K...Not at all a remarkable piece of art nor an example of cutting edge sophisticated engineering...And let’s not even discuss all this Patek foolishness... I’d love to open the casebacks of these “exquisite “ Pateks and Rolexes from the 50s and 60s and see just how artisanal these watches really are.

I hate collectibles like these... I have been a numismatist for 11+ years and your literally buying hype. You can own magnificent pieces of handcrafted art for fractions of the price instead of showing your buddies you have a nice example of a watch that was never used. Or the movement was repurposed so an auction house can get their buyers premium. It’s dick measuring. You can own exquisite things for fractions of the price because other people who reasearch the same brand aren’t smart enough to actually understand Horology
