This film is taken from C.S. Lewis's book and series "The Chronicles of Narnia". It is meant to be an allegory of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lewis was an apologist (a defender of the Christian faith) and wrote several books that are directly arguments for the truth of Christianity and are well worth reading, especially "Mere Christianity." He was a friend of J.R.R. Tolkien who wrote The Lord of the Rings book series. The Lion, Aslan, represents the biblical "Lion of Judah" which was one of the titles of Christ in the Bible. The witch represents Satan and Aslan's death represents the crucifixion. Just as Aslan coming back to life and the girls seeing it first are mirrors of the resurrection. I'm glad you reviewed this and liked it and hope this very short exposition is helpful.

So, the story arc of Aslan is an allegory for the life of Christ. Is the life of Christ in turn an allegory for something? Like the life of faith as a process of personal transformation, maybe? 🤔

Mr. Tumnus is a faun (Latin version of a satyr (сатир))- they're half-goat/half humanoid, while a centaur (кентавр) has a horse's lower body & humanoid upper body. Hope that helps.

Fauna and satyrs are different though. Fauns have the bottom half of a goat, and are known to be very friendly and hospitable, they were said to help people who were lost in the woods, satyrs are much more mischievous, and are known to be much more wild and they often indulge themselves in vices such as drinking and sex, they were known to chase down nymphs and harass them relentlessly, they have the bottom half of a horse, as you can tell by my two descriptions of those creatures they’re widely different and shouldn’t be mistaken, and Mr. Tumnus fits the description of a faun much more than that of a satyr, but I suppose this is a common mistake. Also, fauns are the Roman version of Pan, not satyrs.

Some of the books would be problematic as films. The Magicians Nephew is, in places, a bit of a hotch-potch of mini adventures as Digory and Polly pop between different universes which may not flow well as a cohesive feature-length movie, unless heavily adapted. It would be too bitty. The way the Calormenes are presented in Horse A d His Boy and, especially, The Last Battle could be construed, rightly or wrongly, as racially prejudiced as the description of them is a stereotyped person Middle-Eastern in appearance . Likewise, in the Last Battle the Calormenes are clearly intended to be the enemy of Aslan in the final fight. Understanding the whole allegory as as we do, this sends out the message that the people of the middle-east are the anti-Christ. I’m not necessarily saying that is truly the case, but I can see why it appears that way and it could make for a tricky movie unless heavily adapted.
@mentalcupcakes8142
@mentalcupcakes8142 4 ай бұрын
@@GrilloTheFlightless I see it less as the middle easterns are the anti-christ; but rather a reference to the crusades. Which were a bunch of countries whom, although the crusades were motivated by politocs and greed not by religion, did claim that they were justified by God. And we have to remember, while the Narnia books are an allegory to Christianity, they are also fictional fantasy books, and looking for themes or messages may end in a self-fulfilling prophecy, wherein reality it was really nothing but a writer making a story.

I loved your immersion in the story and especially your comment about your own wardrobe. “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C. S. Lewis is a Christian allegorical fantasy series consisting of seven short novels published from 1950 to 1956. Although written for children, they are not written “down” at all. I read them to my daughter when she was 8 and thoroughly enjoyed them myself. The other two Narnia movies are also excellent: “Prince Caspian” and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

You can see that everything Edmund was going through in the first parts, was like an addiction from the magic that the witch put on him. The candy, her praises for him, was like cocaine to his mind. I'd have to go back to the book for more about his refusing to admit that he'd been to Narnia. It would make more sense to bring them all through to meet his new "friend". The other 2 movies in this series are worthwhile, but that's all that they made of the 7book series. The '80s live action / animated BBC series is good too, and they made the 4th book "the Silver Chair" (get over the bad low budget TV series SFX before even starting it), but nobody would make it or the 5th book "the Horse and His Boy" into movies, because there's hardly any battles or explosions, and that's what movie makers think all movies have to be about. "The Horse and His Boy" is one of the best, and the free audiobook is on youtube. It features the 4 Pevensies as Kings and Queens, as secondary characters.

C.S. Lewis was a very close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, and they were part of a literary circle together called The Inklings, and both taught at Oxford together (Tolkien in Linguistics, Lewis in Literature). When they first met, Lewis was an Atheist, which contrasts quite sharply with Tolkien's devout Catholicism. Under Tolkien's influence, Lewis converted to Christianity...except rather than Catholicism he chose the Anglican faith (Church of England). While Tolkien denied throughout his life The Lord of the Rings and his other stories in Middle-earth were Christian Allegory, (though you can certainly see its influence) The Chronicles of Narnia were VERY much allegorical, and Lewis made no effort to disguise it, especially in the later books in the series (ESPECIALLY especially the final book, The Last Battle). Ironically, neither Lewis nor Tolkien thought much of one another's most famous published works. Yet they still wrote positive reviews and glowing blurbs for the covers. Sadly, their friendship ultimately soured by the 1950s, and never fully reconciled before Lewis's death in 1963 (on the same day that JFK was assassinated, in fact). Only the first three books of the Chronicles were adapted in this version of the series. After Voyage of the Dawn Treader...well...sank at the Box Office, the series was effectively cancelled. It was supposed to be the next big fantasy adventure after The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, but unfortunately fell flat (and to be honest, the second and third movies weren't as good as the first). What you're seeing at the beginning of the film is The Blitz, the bombing of London and other English cities during the Battle of Britain. The scenes of the children being loaded onto trains is something that actually happened. The bombers operated by the Luftwaffe had relatively short range, and couldn't venture particularly deeply into England, so the Children were sent to Northern and Western England and Scotland, in what was code-named Operation Pied Piper. Mr. Tumnus is played by a very young James McAvoy in one of his earliest roles. Another reactor who watched the movie once tried Turkish Delight in between installments. Apparently it is actually NOT very good. LOL at your Freudian Slip. Never change, Dasha. Narnia has both talking animals and regular animals. The filmmakers overlooked that in Narnia lore it's VERY insulting to ride a Talking Beast, excepting in times of great need. And riding a Unicorn is RIGHT OUT. Aslan's humiliation, sacrifice, and resurrection is where the Christian Allegory really begins to kick in. The adult Lucy at the end is played by actress Georgie Henley's elder sister.

I'm excited to see you review this movie, as it is my all-time favorite! The trick behind why the wardrobe sometimes leads to Narnia and sometimes is just an ordinary wardrobe is linked to a person's intentions. If they are actively trying to go to Narnia, it won't work. If they are going into the wardrobe for other reasons, like Lucy using it for a hiding place or just checking it without being sure that Narnia would be there, or Edmund following her into the wardrobe to scare her, then it will open to Narnia. That's why the Professor (who went to Narnia many years before as a boy, before the wardrobe was even made) can't get to Narnia that way, because he would always be trying to get there. The author of the story, C. S. Lewis, had a wardrobe that he and his big brother would play in for hours when they were children, making up stories about an imaginary magical land they called "Boxen". That inspired Lewis to write about a wardrobe as a gateway to a magical world. Edmund liked the idea of being King of Narnia, but the main reason he went to the Witch was because the candy she gave him, the "Turkish Delight" was infused with a magic that made him crave more of it, like a drug addiction. He would have done anything for more of it, including betraying his own family. The four siblings ruled Narnia for 15 years (Narnia time) before they found their way back into the wardrobe, returned home and reverted to their normal ages.

There are seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia series, but only three movies in this video series. There is a much older British TV series (1988-90) covering all seven books if you are interested after finishing the more modern three. Perhaps you figured out that the Turkish Delight was addictive, which made Edmund want more.
@lesliedaubert1411
@lesliedaubert1411 4 ай бұрын
There was a sort of tonic in the drink and Turkish delight that Edmond had that made him snitch. The Professor was curious about Narnia because he was their when he was younger. In the book "The Magician's Nephew " he is the young nephew. That's how he knew that the wardrobe would take them to Narnia. If you watch the end credits he is in the room when Lucy tries to go back in. He tells her that he doesn't think she'll get back in that way but to keep her eyes open just in case.

The time does in deed go differently between the worlds. You see it more here but an immense showing of how differently time passes is The Professor was in Narnia when Aslan created the world some 5,000 years before they arrived in Narnia and he is in his 60's maybe, possibly 50's. But in between Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair the time line is almost identical a year in each world. As with all magical drinks and food, the Hot Cocoa and Turkish Delight is enchanted, he is addicted to them and will do everything he can to get more.

C.S. Lewis studied classics at Oxford, hence why Narnia is a realm inhabited by talking animals and creatures from Greco-Roman mythology. He wrote the Chronicles of Narnia to teach children the truth about Christianity. Aslan is not an allegory of Christ; He is Christ as Christ would appear in a world of talking animals. Christ is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David, and the Lamb that was slain for the sins of the world.

Lewis also taught Literature there, alongside Tolkien in the Linguistics department. In fact they linked the teaching of the two disciplines together.

My only nitpick with this film is that Aslan is too small. He should be much larger than an ordinary lion.
