Chunchi Falls Arakavathy river Kanakapura tourism Weekend trip from Bangalore. Chunchi Falls, is one of the main waterfalls near Bangalore.
This falls has recently become popular, as people started exploring offbeat travel destinations during times of pandemic. It is about 90 kms from Bangalore city.
We started by about 7 in the morning and took about 2 hours to reach this falls. Drive to Chunchi falls was quite smooth with all the beautiful sights on the way. Only the last 1 km is through unpaved muddy road but still it is fine.
Once at Chunchi falls entrance, there is a big parking space. I guess the parking fee is collected by some locals and charges Rs. 30 for car and Rs. 10 for bike. No entry fee.
From parking area, you need to trek around 2 kms to reach this falls. So, be prepared with cap, water & snacks.
There are also few stalls at the entry point where you can buy some foodstuff.
Chunchi falls originate from river Arkavati and is 50 feet tall. It is rocky valley where the river flows surrounded by forest.
The sight of the water gushing down into a series of cascades will definitely leave you spellbound.
This is the last spot before the river Arkavati’s confluence with river Cauvery at Sangama.
Lush green surroundings and good temperature make it a good picnic spot.
Interesting part is that the word ‘Chunchi’ is derived from a tribal couple, Chuncha and Chunchi.
Travellers come across a watchtower which enables them to devour a panoramic 360-degree view of the rocky terrain adorned with deciduous forest.
If you are an adventure junkie, then you can trek down to the falls to soak in the beauty of the surroundings.
Some local guides can also support to take you near to the falls. They charge about Rupees 150 for the same.
One should not try to step closer to the falls, as it might be very risky and dangerous.
Swimming is prohibited here due to the strong undercurrents and presence of crocodiles.
Also, staying here until late evening is not advisable. As when the place is deserted, the chances of mishaps are high.
Overall, Chunchi Falls is perfect for one day outing around Bangalore.
This waterfalls is tucked away from the commercialisation and are usually deserted.
So go ahead, relax and enjoy with family and friends.

How To Reach Chunchi Falls
Since the public transport is not so readily available here, it is recommended to use your transportation. You have to cross Yeleguri Village after taking the Kanakapura exit to reach the waterfall.
The closest town to Chunchi Falls is Kanakapura, and the nearest airport is that of Mysore.
Tips For Visiting Chunchi Falls
1. Pick up your most comfortable pair of shoes while visiting Chunchi Falls, due to the rocky terrain.
2. Carry some snacks and clean drinking water with you as the river water is unfit for drinking.
3. Beware of the crocodiles in the water. Also, the area near the waterfall is slippery and hence requires the visitors to be careful.
4. Staying till late here may result in accidents.
5. There are a few small shops near the parking area, from where you can fuel yourself.
Places of visit near Chunchi Falls
There are a few attractions nearby Chunchi Falls, which are namely Sangama, Galibore Fishing Camp, Mekedatu Falls, Bheemeshwari and other tourist spots of Mysore. Travellers, who include Chunchi Falls in their itinerary, usually cover Sangam and Mekedatu along with the falls.
Best Time To Visit Chunchi Falls
The best time to visit this fall would be during or right after the monsoon when there is enough water in the Arkavati River. The months from August to February are the ideal months to visit Chunchi Falls. It is not advisable to visit this spot in summers as most of the water dries out, and the travellers are often disappointed by the scorching heat and a dried up waterfall.
