One part of Sally Hawkins' performance I absolutely loved is when Giles is walking away from her and she can't call after him due to her muteness, so she just angrily pounds her hand on the wall just so he'll look at her when she's signing. It's such an awesome use of that character trait to depict unbridled anger.

Anyone think that this is a more mature version of the little mermaid. I mean, we've got a mute girl, a humanoid sea creature that falls in love with a human, and in the end she finally turns into the form of her lover so that they can spend the rest of their life together.

this is a millenial remake of Creature From the Black Lagoon. seriously. since its 2018 and not the 1950s we finally get an answer to the age old question " why did the Creature From the Black Lagoon keep trying to kidnap the girl and what was he going to do to her?" hence we got this "modern fairy tale" as best picture the same people who made this film are trying to do a derivative of the original King Kong next but the sex scenes were too difficult to film artistically since they couldnt find an actress who could accomodate King Kongs seven foot johnson in a *believable* and oscar-worthy fashion. they are hoping for another best picture and will cast giant Harvey Weinstein as King Kong. the only actresses who could portray the sex scenes accurately were all the Kardashians and Miley Cyrus and we all know none of them have any acting chops or talent. they will instead use robotic Real Dolls for the sex scenes with King Kong and hope to be first to get a robot sex doll nominated for Best Actress

I think the point was that the amphibian man did the worst possible thing & Giles not only forgave him, but went on to state you can't be mad at him for being who he is. Nope, the gills are fish man magic. The marks on her neck throughout the movie are scars from when she was mutilated as a child which causes her to be mute. At the end of the film the fish uses his powers to turn those scars into gills so they can live together under the sea.

clatter411 Well not necessarily. Guillermo Del Toro often mix his fantasy with his reality. In more than the obvious ways in this movie. It makes perfect sense that she actually is a descendent of the fish God people. And that she was washed away and just lost her childhood. Maybe she didn’t know how to speak to humans and so she just couldn’t speak. There are a lot of reasons and all of them could be justified using evidence from the movie. But Del Toro often asks you to pick which ever reality for the movie you want just like he did with pans labyrinth

Takamatsu kun actually I think the Amazon basin has brackish water (basically water with a little salt). Also I've had a few freshwater fish and many people add a little aquarium salt to the water to give the fish extra minerals for their health.
@LorieLynn
@LorieLynn 6 жыл бұрын
"Think about how quick one second is...now consider this....in one second the Amazon pours almost 60 million gallons, or 620,000 cubic yards of water, into the Atlantic Ocean. This massive influx of fresh water actually dilutes the ocean's salinity, or saltiness, for up to 100 miles offshore. The water flowing out of the Amazon creates a brackish water system of a combination of both fresh and salt water for literally hundreds of square miles! " -Amazon Facts So that would not be a correct sin to give since it is perfectly reasonable that the creature could require saltwater. It just would have needed to come from closer to the ocean than not.

In the book it's more like Hoffsteller just accidentally let slip the clue. Strickland is demanding the names and ranks of the "strike team" that took the asset, and Hoffsteller starts hysterically laughing, dizzy from blood loss, at the idea that a secret agent spy team snuck in to do it. Strickland starts emptying his clips into Hoffsteller's stomach, demanding the names and ranks, and Hoffsteller laughs, "Ranks? Janitors." before thinking he probably shouldn't have said that. It was clearly an accident there, and the story still worked. I don't know why they wrote it this way in the movie.

For all the people saying I need to "chill the fuck out" let me explain to you how copyright works. It is really quite simple. If you don't have a copyright on your work anyone can claim it as their own. A friend of mine had written a beautiful poem a couple years back. She had a friend of hers say that she was interested in poetry. That she like to read other people's poetry from time to time. My friend was immensely flattered and said yes. They had stopped being friends over something else A few weeks later. A few years later, she walked into a cafe and there was her poetry on the wall. With the so-called friend's name on it. When she tried to sue, the lawyer said she had no legal rights because she didn't have a copyright on it. She told me to never share my work before getting a copyright after that. Have a nice day everyone.

Wanted to put my two cents in about their weird work schedule. From my retail experience, every time I would be scheduled for opening the registers in the morning, the cleaning crew was just finishing up. I arrive around 7am to open at 9am (I have other duties to do like completing online orders along with opening the registers) and they are finishing up vacuuming on are out of the store by 7:30am. Out of curiosity I actually asked one of the ladies how long they had been there, and she said since 3am, which was mind-boggling to me cause I could barely pull up my ass out of bed at 6 in the morning, and then had to stay there for a full 8-hour shift. So actually, the 12-4 shift, which is 12am-4am for a once a day clean up crew, is reasonable and I do not believe deserves a sin.

Only one person mentions that it smells horrible and he should get it checked out, and that's astounding. The smell of rotting flesh would permeate every room it was in, and no one would be able to stomach getting close enough to him to share a car. I can believe his wife said nothing since he had her cowed, but for none of the doctors he works with to say boo seems odd.

@@candice_ecidnac You're 100% right. I have smelled gangrene. I had never smelled it before. When you smell it, you know, and then you announce to the bus, "Whoever is wounded, please get medical help. I can smell it and I can't see it, and that's not good." It was like normal infected-cut smell but ... 100%, more metallic, sweeter, and just ... worse

I spent much of the film admiring the beautiful cinematography, but also really not buying that a human would be sexually attracted to the fishman. I could see them becoming friends, but not lovers. Furthermore, the fishman seems to have largely identical expressions of love and affection to western traditions. I remember reading an interview with James Cameron somewhere about Neytiri in Avatar, where he said, 'she's got to have tits' in order to make it believable that Jake would fall in love with her, and I think it worked there. I dunno... The Shape of Water was a weird film. Still, it's not going to give me nightmares like Splice did, the only other film featuring interspecies sex I've seen...damn that was messed up.

I know this is super late, but a lot of people have come to the realisation that Eliza wasn't human. A couple of things point to this - such as her obsession with water, and the perfectly symmetrical on her neck. The hair healing thing and the fishman getting shot and healing show that he has regenerative abilities, meaning that those weren't actually scars, but gills. She's either the result of a fishperson-human relationship herself, or a mermaid, and was born with gills that sealed up or were forcefully sown up by human doctors after she was found by the river. In which case, I don't think it's odd since if she is partially amphibious, it'd make sense why she would have fallen for him and not a human sometime prior.

I actually don't consider a lot of the sins related to "why are they trusting the staff with secrets?" to be plot holes--to me, it fit well with the higher-ups assumption that the cleaning staff (and minorities) are harmless. It shows how this kind of superiority complex is self-defeating, and makes for a great revenge at the end.

I saw it as the staff are on the lower rung of society and they probably can’t get a job anywhere else and working there could be a good job but because one of them is mute and the other one is black they probably don’t have a lot of job opportunities so the higher-ups know this and know that they’re probably not going to blab and risk losing their job or maybe they were made to sign a nondisclosure agreement

Realistically though, they wouldn't have had cleaning staff like that. Places like that might have cleaning staff for low security areas, but it'd be up to the normal workers to maintain cleanliness in the higher security areas.
