We could've added Oprah and Celine Dion to this list, but you can tell they very likely declined offers to be in this. You know how you can tell? Oprah only appears in stock footage, and Celine has some of the worst onstage body-doubling out there, of someone moving like her on stage (shown from either far away or from an angle that obscures her face) while one of her songs plays. I will say this for Mike Myers and this movie. The movie was terrible, Myers admitted as much, and he mostly disappeared to reassess his career. He didn’t try to make a sequel to bank off the reputation of the first like James Nguyen. He doesn’t have a Mariah Carey-esque rider forbidding people from mentioning the movie. He didn’t make a Shyamalan style movie about how he’s a misunderstood genius in his field. And he hasn’t gone after critics of the movie with Rob Schneider fury. Nope, he made a mistake, admitted such, then quit while he still had a semblance of a good name. And that’s the classiest thing a Razzie nominee or winner can do.

I think the difference between Disaster Movie and the Love Guru is that the Love Guru was trying to be a parody of one specific thing. It didn't do it *well*, but it at least had some thread of an idea about what it was supposed to parody. Disaster Movie throws random mid-2000s pop culture shit at the screen and makes fart jokes. Pouring tea through his nose I guess was a joke about neti pots. As for Myers's head on a kid's body, I'd say he "borrowed" that from the George Lopez show where, whenever there was a flashback to George's childhood, they'd paste his head onto a kid's body. There it made sense, though, because there was a running joke about how big his head had always been.

"What's next? Fat Bastard is getting his own movie?" Damn it, Sean, don't jinx it, the way Hollywood is creatively bankrupt, that is not impossible even with the franchise being old and done with (90s nostalgia is a thing now and we're getting in time for 2000s nostalgia).

Seltzer-Berg movies are the worst thing that ever happened to parody movies. They essentially killed the genera. Airplane, these movies are not. Airplane still holds up today as the poster child for the parody movie, and it still holds up today. All Seltzer-Berg films do is pop culture references. And that's it. That's the joke. They're a one trick pony. Airplane also has some pop culture parody in there. But here's the thing. They wrote all kinds of non-pop culture comedy in there, that works and still holds up. The Seltzer-Berg movies have NONE of that other comedy in there. It's like they saw Airplane and completely missed all the reasons that it was funny and is still funny. Seltzer-Berg movies completely lack comedy completely if you aren't familiar with the stuff that they're referencing. You can't say the same for a movie like Airplane. It's still funny regardless if you don't know some of the references.
@spaceace4387
@spaceace4387 2 жыл бұрын
Another reason why Airplane was funny was because the characters were saying the most absurd shit ever with a straight face, in Seltzerberg movies they go way too far over the top (as if they are trying to tell the audience: THIS IS FUNNY (which is isn't)).

I’m also so sick and tired of people defending movies like “disaster movie”, “meet the Spartans” etc. because “they’re meant to be stupid, it’s a parody”. Just because something is a parody doesn’t mean you have to make it stupid, while on the topic, thank you for saying disaster movie was worse because I agree, it’s not only worse than the other nominees, but in seltzerberg’s entire filmography, my brother wanted to do a recorded audio commentary for fun and we would mock the film rifftrax style, but the microphone he had made our voices too soft so we had to record the audio multiple times…as a result I had to watch the movie four times in a row, and each rewatch I hated it more and more. So yes, “Disaster Movie” should have won the award, to me it would be like if instead of “Jack and Jill” winning worst picture they picked one of the other nominees, nothing came close. At least “Jack and Jill” won that award so there some justice in the world

Seltzerberg's filmography desperately wants to be Better Off Dead so much that they, like that unnamed fat dude who played the creepy nerd in Better Off Dead, missed the point as to why it worked in the first place. The absurdity of it all reminds us at all times that while, yes, everything is exaggerated, it still plays with a real-life issue. It's designed to be as pitch-black as it can be while amping up the goofy factor. Very much the Rob McIlhenney/Danny DeVito playbook.

I prefer this review, thank you, because at least Smeghead doesn't have an ungodly unbearable voice that sounds like he went through puberty twice and never left it, and at least he doesn't blow up at the elephant sex scene because anything related to sex sets him off (along with Mr. Enter and Oancitizen), and I know for a fact that not all asexuals are like that. And at least Smeghead isn't some snot-nosed brat who thinks he's the British Roger Ebert when he started reviewing films (and before that wrote film reviews) when he was still in high school. Mike Myers actually wasn't "riding high" at this time. His non-Shrek career was pretty dead after a couple of things happened. First, he walked off of the Sprockets film adaptation in 2000 (I've heard it called Dieter and Dieter's Day). He did this with pre-production complete and money already spent with less than a week before shooting. And he did so because he did not like the screenplay, which he himself wrote. Universal sued him for large $ because they had to pay everybody and didn't get a movie. As a settlement, he agreed to star in "The Cat and the Hat". If you've seen this movie, you know it's utterly terrible. This failure, combined with his reputation for being difficult or risky, kept him from doing anything but Shrek for a few years. This was his big attempt at a comeback, not the high point.

@@WobblesandBean I can't speak for a absolute certainty of the location of his hat in relation to his posterior, but given Myers' reputation I'm amazed he was given complete creative control in 2007-2008 for any major picture, let alone this. Yes, the writer's strike made investing in a film led by someone who could (supposedly) write comedy important. And Goldmember (as much as I dislike it) made big money only a few years back. But the elevator pitch for The Love Guru doesn't contain a single appealing element for an audience or a money seeking executive other than "stars Mike Myers". Even "Master of Disguise", the similarly horrible comeback attempt from Wayne's World co-star Dana Carvey, could be summed up in elevator pitch that doesn't make you want to wretch. At least assuming you had no knowledge of that final product.
