On shaking the paint cans; you might want to try the drink mixer pose. Hold the top and bottom, then bring it up by your shoulder and have the can parallel to the ground. You can then shake it easily and with little effort. Once you sorta know the pose, it's quite easy one handed with a spray can. Also, dang I love horrors. They're one of my favorite creatures in all of Warhammer. Also also yay vortex mixer. As someone who had wrist and hand issues they are amazing.

I definitely do something wrong with those spray cans. I nearly always have some bubbles on the miniatures after the colour has dried. Although I shake the can a lot and give it a bath in warm water. So at the moment I prime my models by hand using either Army Painter Brush-on Primer or Vallejo Surface Primer.

I am not a huge fan of the contrast paints but I do use some like Wyldwood, which I think is fantastic. I prefer Pro-acryl transparents to Citadel's contrasts and these come with a mixer ball to help ease mixing. I have always primed by hand. I considered getting an airbrush but wasn't sure that I would get the best out of it being a tabletop quality painter, although I do paint nearly every day, so it wouldn't be sitting idle.

I’m sold already, it’s a white that actually covers. TAP Matt white, and Corax White have horrible coverage. They make globs spattering your minis.

I've not used those others before. I mostly used Wraithbone spray and if I did white it was from a cheap can or airbrush.

I knew I wanted the yellow (and the brown), but now I know I want that blue as well, it’s really nice! And I’ll end up trying the primer eventually, even if it’s expensive. Informative video, thanks! 👍😁

the blue horror really looks good. The other two colors/effects I find rather meh. But well, they are not contrast paints, they are "quick vibrant base coat over white" or whatever you want to call it. Nothing an airbrush or a good yellow paint couldn't do tbh.

Some of them seem to be abit more opaque than I’d expect from a contrast paint, but on the flip side of that, it’s easier to thin a paint than thick it up.

I think I'll thin the pink down a bit to get the same effect of the blue.

When we saw Lee mixing the blue, these are sort of the opposite of older contrast paint. Rather than a mix of dark contrast medium in with the color, it’s a white medium.

Regarding the white stains I can recommend the mixing balls - it's quite easy to mix them even without the mixer.

I second that. I use mixing balls with all my contrast paints and any other thicker paint like XV-88.

Get some Army painter stainless steel balls. Put one or two in the contrast paints. It really helps with mixing the paints! You could even use stainless steel washers or nuts. Just make sure its something that won't rust or oxidize it will mess up your paint.

I didn't think about them for Warcry, nice one! I've never been a fan of Tzeentch until I started playing the CSM and the ranged buffs came from the Mark of Tzeentch. Now they are definitely growing on me, and I can definitely see me playing them in Warcry. Thanks!

In my limited experience, the white scars just has much better coverage. Any other way of doing white I've gotten uneven coverage or spotting. I've only used the white scars on five models so far- five white scars intercessors.

The big difference I see in the GW spray paints and the spray primer from the local hardware store, is the coverage and finish. The hardware store primer goes on a little too thick and with a very rough, grainy finish.

Try Krylon Camo primer.

Looking for a white and light grey to replace grey seers and wraith bone. Haven’t found any. The Krylon camos should be great for Astra Militarum tho’, THANKS for the tip! 😀

@@Dragonfire-tn2jg This and Krylon ColorMaxx white, grey, or black all work well. Never had a rough or grainy finish I have been using these types of primers for many years.

I mean what I know is the Corax White spray is the most awful spray I have experienced: blotchy & chalky finish. Don't even think about spraying that in slightly subpar wheather conditions. So I'm really cautious when I see White Scar spray. This of course doesn't mean I hate all of the GW products, I'm a huge fan of Contrast paints. As for the spray-priming: I have moved to the very recently released AK Interactive Wargame sprays. I've not seen such incredible coverage with only 2-3 bursts. Right now I'm using the AK Interactive Wargame Golden Armor spray (400ml) and oh boy that thing is like magic. The smoothest gold color from a spray can I have seen. I bought that for 10€ over here in Germany.

there are a lot of different paints out there that are just as good as citadel, if not better. most warhammer products are over priced because of being imported. alot of spray paints wind up in the air and not on what your spraying. shop around and try different companies products.

Not sure why but my attempt using White Scar has resulted in a horrible grainy finish. I am going to need to strip and try again :(

I just used it again yesterday, and the same thing happened to me. The first time great but after sitting not full since the video, it's come out a bit grainy too. I'm posting a video later today that will show it. Sorry it happened to you mate.

@@tabletopskirmishgames not your fault mate it’s the paint! Not happened on any other primer I’ve tried including other GW primers. It’s almost so dusty I can pick it off really easily back to the plastic. So it will have to be a strip. But I’m just really keen to understand what I’ve done wrong as I have followed the same process I always use without issue.

The only other thing I have heard is that the contrast paints are designed to work with the citadel primer. Not sure if this is true or just a way to try to push you towards buying their primer. Personally I'm just getting into using contrast paints and I've tried stuff I've picked up at the hardware store and the White Scar and I still can't tell if it is the primer or the specific contrast color that gives a better result on some compared to others.

I've used Wraithbone for most of my models painted with contrast, but when I used the cheaper sprays, I didn't see a difference in the finish except for the colour differences.
