It is against the law in California to record someone without asking their permission. So they need to be prosecuted even though it turned out to be a good thing. That is a good law and I'm glad it's on the books otherwise we'd be recorded all the time without our permission.

When I first heard about it, I didn't know they were talking about a little kid. I thought it was a grown teenager or an adult who was out committing crimes. Once I figured it was a kid, my jaw dropped.

I agree. If the meeting was about the public they serve, it shouldn't have been and wouldn't be a "private" meeting. If they went out to dinner and discussed it between themselves while not on the payroll serving the public, that could be considered private. And since it was in a building payed for by tax payers,how is that private? It's no different that police need a warrant to enter your private home but do not need a warrant to search your car on a public road because your expectation of privacy goes out the window if you are in a public place.

Why are children off limits? The child had no business being in the meeting in the first place. Bonin wasn't offended for over a year when this was said right in front of him. The kid still isn't offended unless he has been told to be.

You cannot record another person in a private conversation without their permission. Whether it be in a closed room or on the phone. I'm glad that law is on the books. In a public place there may be a gray area, I'm not sure.

This was in a closed room with an expectation of privacy therefore it is against the law.
