Only two buttons to push and the #CityAirbus demonstrator performed its first fully automatic flight: take off, stabilisation in flight and landing.
At the end of August, it will be transferred to Manching for forward flight trials in a secure environment where it can further expand its flight envelope.
CityAirbus is an all-electric, four-seat, multicopter vehicle demonstrator that focuses on advancing remotely piloted electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flight.

@@LiamHantos, that would depend on where you are from. I am from Brazil and, here, you have to start by taking the written exams. Afterwards, you'll enroll in a helicopter school and acquire the necessary flight hours. Once you are ready, you will be checked by the Aviation Authority. That about sums it up. I hope you achieve your goals.

That's nice but I don't really see this kind of vehicles as the future of city transport. What about the noise? Many of this flights would produce a lot of noise pollution, that generate health problems in people. Electric cars, for example, are quieter than tradicional cars. I think we should go in that direction.

Finally somebody with a brain, just replace a few percent of all cars in a city with a (silent) helicopter and you will no longer understand a word on the ground. One Helicopter will be heard in hundreds of flats and thousands of people at a time while transporting the capacity of a small city car at best. What about nighttime? I guarantee suchlike ideas will be shut down when about 1‰ of person kilometers will be covered by air taxis, just because you will be heard by tens of thousands of people on a 5 minute cruise to the other side of the city. If you make it so expensive that only the rich will be able to afford it we have the top 1% again f*ing with people's sleep and wellbeing. Trying to get people around in cities with helicopters is a dead end, i cannot understand the hype given the fact that all those engineers involved are in posession of a well-functioning brain.

What are the advantages over a helicopter? I'm curious and very much interested.
@robertrussell4549
@robertrussell4549 3 жыл бұрын
There are a number of advantages to using an eVTOL instead of a traditional helicopter. First, electric is safer and more consistent than gas-powered engines; a battery with stored energy vs. a complex mechanism that explodes flammable material in just the right way to generate that same energy. (Plus the obvious benefit of environmental efficiency) Secondly, multiple smaller rotors make much less noise than one large blade; I’m not sure about energy consumption, but I would imagine they would use less power altogether as well. Thirdly, because there is no singular huge blade up above, the system can have additional safety systems, such as parachutes. Virtually all eVTOLs have parachutes, whereas I’ve never heard of a helicopter with one installed (for obvious reasons). Overall, with further development, eVTOLs will be safer, cleaner, more efficient, and quieter than typical aircraft. Very exciting times.

You have to understand that the fact that a large aviation company like Airbus entering the evtol arena is significant. They have connections in aviation agencies that can make this tech a reality. Also Even though others have already done this, it's important to see many parties come to the field and compete. This helps produce the best products.

Why not just make it like a regular helicopter only autonomous? Why use quad rotors? And why is it so much harder to fly than a DJI or typhoon drone? Why not just copy and paste?
@lukebuchwald9252
@lukebuchwald9252 2 жыл бұрын
Helicopters are inherently dangerous because they have no redundancy built in --- something goes wrong with the single rotor and you plummet to your death --- multi rotor aircraft are much safer because one or two rotors can fail and vehicle can still fly or safely land
@vincebenego8548
@vincebenego8548 2 жыл бұрын
@@lukebuchwald9252 Did you like your own comment? Who is that dumb? At this point the ignorance is starting to explain a lot here. You ever heard of a thing called dead stick? Believe it, or not traditional helicopters are gliders. Admittedly helicopters are a lot harder to fly than they even appear, but they do have redundancy for flight, and can land with auto radiation, without engine torque input. They're actually safer to land than winged aircraft. A helicopters rotors are its wings so when the engine fails it has a unique reverse affect that still helps it stay airborne. If engineers were smart they would use that for some kind of in flight battery regeneration. Counter to regen in a car which may only take a few seconds to come to a stop in a practical distance, helicopters may have to glide for a long time in search of safe landing in an emergency which may take up to several minutes, and could actually be a decent recharge in that time. Helicopters can also switch to glide mode seamlessly, so it could be regularly incorporated into flight routines to extend the range. Multi rotor aircraft are not necessarily safer especially not copters. I don't know how you can fly something with that uneven of thrust if the working rotor is not centered on the vehicle. Not to say it might not have any dead stick gliding ability, but with all the material surrounding the motors, and not being used for flight, I'd assume this design is pretty limited.
@lukebuchwald9252
@lukebuchwald9252 2 жыл бұрын
@@vincebenego8548 you sound so silly with fake terms like "glide stick" --- there are too many catastrophic points of failure with a heli and the swashplate --- an electric octacopter can have 3 motors fail and it will keep on chugging --- now that is SAFETY

the 4 motors should be movable both vertically and horizontally. Horizontally to take off and land and vertically to fly faster. Two motors can be fixed and another two can be mobile.

I would've like to have heard just how noisy those 8 rotors are...from the brief clip of it taking off, it seemed noisier than an already-proven and certificated Robinson R44 four-seat helicopter, which kind of defeats the object of this machine. An R44 is also safer, faster, lighter and much, much cheaper with much greater range and endurance. As a (retired) helicopter pilot I would NEVER invest my hard-earned money in something like this... it's just an upscaled drone!

@abhimanyuchatterjee9857
@abhimanyuchatterjee9857 3 жыл бұрын
Do you know what autonomy means? This was a completely autonomous flight. Have you any idea how difficult it is to even fly a normal helicopter.. They are notoriously unstable. Speak to a helicopter pilot. Additionally, taking a look at the name of the project should tell why it is a success. How many times have you sat in a traffic jam cursing because of the time lost? This design will be further refined to completely eradicate that problem and also save the earth at the same time. Seriously, it's like people don't think before making comments.
