Civil war special, the Yugoslavian M70E bayonet, an unlicensed copy of the Soviet AKM type 2 bayonet

Hi guys, today we're taking a look at the Yugslavian take on the AKM Type 2 bayonet. My understanding is these were made unlicensed by Zastava.

Excellent presentation of the Yugoslav bayonet. The missing strap on this bayonet is military green.

Simple method for removing cosmoline from these bayonets and scabbards is to fill a bucket or sink with very hot water, soak it for a 10-15 minutes. Fill it up,with more hot water, get a rag, Dawn dishwasher liquid, used toothbrush, and clean off the residue. The heat will liquify the cosmoline. Dry off the bayonet and scabbard in a warm oven for 30 minutes (160 degrees F). Easy peasy. Then wipe down with a thin coat of your favorite gun oil.

The m70 rifle is not a unlicensed AK(M), it's developed from the (licensed )RPK the yugoslavs had. As they needed a LMG they figured it'd be smarter to simply buy the RPK license and slightly modify its receiver and scale down some parts to create a domestic assault rifle. As yugoslavs were generally taller then soviets, they 'd have to modify the AKM anyway to create a suitable assault rifle for their army.

The book you might be referring to is called "The Serbian, Montenegrin and Yugoslavian Bayonets and Fighting Knives" by B. Bogdanović.

My Soviet 6X4 is from Izhevsk factory. New untuched with matching numbers No° 283 And my Yugoslavian from Zastava with matching numbers and "И" ( I ) as the control letter. No° 52529 The Yugoslavian has no leather in it's retaining strap, it's in gray fabric same model that the Soviet but in gray instead of brown. It also should have a light brown frog. My bayonet has one, both are new and unused from factory. A noteworthy thing is that the И is Serbian. It has a tiny No° 2 just under the hole where my frog attaches between the humps. The Soviet one has 80 or 08.

Did these come with red handles also?

I've never seen a Yugoslavian M70E bayonet with red handles. That said Iraq bought tooling from Yugoslavia and made their own orange ones. Other than that, most Warsaw pact countries made these in all different colours. From memory, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria and Russia made them with orange or red handles.

I don't have a Russian one to compare it to but it is lower quality than my Polish one. I have heard the Russian ones are quite nice though so probably
