How to get rid of that grainy look when using coloured pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat
In this first of a series of mini videos taking a closer look at Pastelmat I show you just what I mean when I say 'push on through those layers'. A lot of those who try Pastelmat often give up on their first piece as they simply cannot understand how to get their piece looking soft & smooth like others manage to do. In this quick video I zoom in on the 'tooth' of the paper & show how to build those layers.
Hope it helps!

Thank you for your demonstration of smoothing out that grainy look in the fur! I've been trying to do that with my pastel pencils and with your tips, I can see that patience and perseverance are key to that creamy appearance. Great work and explanation.

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I didn’t realize just how many layers the pastel-mat could hold and know now to keep layering!

Thank you for sharing this info. I have only used pastelmat with your Hee Haw tutorial, which turned out great, but I have struggled with my next project on pastelmat. Like you, I prefer the really smooth look. I now know I need more layers.

Hello, thank you so much for your wonderful tutorial. I use Faber Castel Polychromos and Caran D'ache Luminance on Clairefontaine Pastelmat and have the exact same problems with grainy look. In some cases I tried it with Powder Blender, it worked, but not in all situations with fine details. So your video helped me very much. Kind regards from Germany and have a wonderful day.

Thanks very much for explaining. I’m working on my 1st piece of Pastelmat & hated it in short order. Now I know to push colours more.

I love pastelmat paper. I also use colourfix sanded paper. I prefer using pastelmat for animal portraits because I can get the details better; panpastels help fill in the grainy areas on pastelmat, however, colourfix paper is more sanded and it hurts my finger tips when I blend...so pastelmat and sennelier le carte paper are my favorites. :)

Thanks for this, I have the same problem with the grainy look on every sanded paper I’ve tried. But I love working on sanded paper! It’s faster. I found it if I drag my finger over it lightly sometimes that will help a little. But it’s no solution. After watching you I’m going to try using Derwent artists pencils because they’re so thick and creamy to start with. Normally I never want to fill the grain so fast, but that might be a solution to this problem.
