Watch this video to learn a rotational stretch for your upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid. You'll also learn about cranial nerve 11, which innvervates these muscles, so that you can use them to your best advantage. What an ingenious way for S-A-F-E release and stretch in rotation. In combination with the forward bending and spiralling walking! Wow a sequence is created that tackles my major shoulder issue.... which has been accompanying me most of my life. Long term practising will follow now. Thankyou, Clare.

Fantastic - yes it is SO much safer than the crazy neck stretches I see people doing. All the muscle of the neck travel around the torso in spirals, so if you rotate in a lengthening way, you are going to be following the fibers of the muscles which is the most effective way to both engage and release. Happy practicing!

Awesome! I was actually surprised at how good my whole body felt after making this last week! My weekend run felt effortless :-) and I found the spiraling motion of arms is really good for running too.

Wow! Wonderful release in a very tight muscle!

Melissa so glad this one helped you. Yes those poor upper traps get a bad rep for being tight. I believe that this basic rotational movement brings them into right relationship with all the other muscles they need to coordinate with. Keeping ones shoulders "square" is sure to create rock hard upper traps.

Hi granduck1! Glad you found me here, that is what KZfaq is so great for! You can sign up for my newsletter at embodiedlearningsystems.com/. A sign up form will pop up when you click away from the site, or you can just scroll down to the bottom of the home page, you will find a link there. I'll be announcing new online workshops soon via the newsletter. Also, I teach 1:1 online, and in person in NYC if you live here :-). You'll find all needed info on the website.

Any relation of the trap and scm with the jaw position and mastication asymmetries? Will this exercise reactivate the weaker trap and deactivate (release) the tonic trap? Thanks much for you insight.

Probably :-) since everything is connected. I'm not sure how it worked for AT Motion, but in my case, when I turn my head to the right in this particular exercise, I notice that my jaw slightly releases on the right side, seeming to want to center itself a tiny bit. Thus, there is a release of muscle connecting the jaw to the skull on the side TOWARDS which I turn. My jaw is not even in relation to my skull - my teeth don't meet evenly but skew to the right side, so turning to the right side releases my habit/resting state of my jaw. What did you find?

I also have a thoracic cage asymmetry, especially if I swell out ribs and lift the diaphragm...

@@geraldkurkjian2922 well, our bodies are inherently asymmetrical, so you have to careful in trying to correct that. Heart is more on the left, left lungs are shaped different than right lungs, etc etc. In the AT work, we look first for overall ease. Rotational movement tends to free up habitual tightnesses by first engaging, then releasing, the muscles that rotate one body part in relation to another. This has a side effect of returning the whole body to a less compressed/habitually twisted state, but you may still be a bit asymmetrical overall :-).
