If your tongue is resting in your palate, it is able to disassociate from moving with your jaw, head , etc. this alone helps amplify the effort from said CN. I see when you are moving your tongue your jaw moved along. Low, forward tongue placement can shift the teeth and occlusion into a suboptimal position - once again this may occlude cranial nerve effort. We see a strong correlation with jaw pain, sleep disturbances, dental issues when the tongue doesn’t rest in the roof of the mouth. This impacts the vagus nerve. I work directly with this population and see how low, forward tongue posture can negatively impact one’s health 😢

No position of your tongue will be a problem if you don't hold it all the time. I am not recommending any one position or "placement", that's the whole message I'm putting forward. It's not natural to try and hold your tongue in one place all the time. Also, Your language is very unclear - how can cranial nerve effort be "occluded?"how does a mobile tongue negatively impact your vagus nerve? I'm not even a medical person and this language is exceedingly vague.

Thanks so much for this aspect of treating the vagus nerve. I have porphyria. It's a genetic blood disorder. Trauma triggers it to become active. At that time, anything controlled by the autonomic nervous system can fail. People often die of respiratory paralysis. I had this happen and was able to survive, barely. I will add this technique to what I use. Wish you were in our area. Thanks again.

Well, it's easier said than done. If you are accurately perceiving that total body habit pattern, then chances are you can "stop doing it." But you might need the skilled help of an Alexander Technique teacher to do it! You can't change a total body pattern by trying to "fix tension" in one place. your whole body will need to adjust it's balance, and that affects every part. Maybe you can find an AT teacher in your area? I do work online! You can book a free 15 minute consult at calendly.com/clare-mobilignment/15min-free-consult

Thank you, this was really helpful. Have been quite confused and frustrated to try to keep my tongue on the roof of my mouth. It most of the time want to be more in the front. I wonder if the tongue position has something to do with forward head position? Do you have something to say about that? 💖
@EmbodiedLearningSystems
@EmbodiedLearningSystems 4 ай бұрын
Well, that depends on what you mean by "head forward position." For sure, since your tongue and jaw are also part of your postural system, if you arent trying to hold them in any particular position, they will shift in relationship to your head and body. Often, however, when people say "head forward position" they are really thrusting their neck forward and tension the back of their neck to pull their head backwards into their spine. Language around these things can be tricky. Is there exercise/treatments for cranial 8 damage caused by Ramsey Hunt syndrome? Thank you
@EmbodiedLearningSystems
@EmbodiedLearningSystems 10 ай бұрын
Hi Terri, I would speak to your doctor about this. There must be many different possible combinations of challenges that damage to Cranial Nerve 8 would cause, and there are physical therapists who specialize in vestibular issues. The Alexander Technique, which is what I teach, doesn't diagnose or treat anything. Rather, it's an educational method of learning how your whole body works best in coordination. So if one part is damaged, there are always amazing ways that our system can adapt and re-balance itself, using all of the resources still healthy and functioning. A teacher can certainly help you learn about those resources so that you can adapt more effectively to your new situation! Hi! Wondering if you may help. I have a condition that I am extra sentisitive to smells. I eat by smell etc etc Everything in my life is based on smell Ive understood. The bearable smells great, my problem is more and more smells are unbearable to me and most times its things other people dont smell 😢 a d it makes me nauseas and I vomit and I newrly pass out and sometimes spend days like this. Since I was a child I hated perfumes; can't handel cigarette smell close or far, old (in furniture) or new; any toxic smells that affect others to, knock me out basically. It attacks my stomach also. Any idea how to regulate this? Where to get help or more info? 🙏🏼

Dear Miar600, a little research shows that some folks are born with what is called a "smell disorder" (it's unfortunate that differences are often called disorders, since it can make exploring them scarier than necessary!) but some can be an indication of illness as well. Since you are experiencing a change for the worse, I'd recommend seeing an ENT to start, and going from there. You might end up with a neurologist or a smell disorder clinic, depending on where you live and your access to health care. I found this helpful page: www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/smell-and-taste-disorders

I had an aspiration pneumonia with an elevated hemidiaphragm. They found it with a chest Xray and not knowing what type of pneumonia, prescribed a Zpack which basically killed off my gut biome and nearly me for that matter. I had am endoscopy at the same time as my colonoscopy and was further diagnosed with diverticulosis and a couple of benign pullups they removed. They told me that my dyspnea was due to damage of the Phrenic nerve and then did further breathing tests, sleep disorder tests, and checked the gas level in my blood. I am still not breathing right and this has been since December. I just did your exercise of pinching my inner ear and I can tell there is a difference in my breathing! I'm definitely following you! @EmbodiedLearningSystems

Full action (that's the word I use I think) = full extension of the legs away from the pelvic floor. If your head is going up, and your legs are extending fully, your whole body is at it's fullest length, including your spine, which relieves pressure on all spinal nerves including the sacral ones. Thank you for this wonderful mediation, Clare! I'm loving how the exercise is loosening the grip of pressure that I have been putting on myself in figuring out "who I am as a teacher and how to convey that to the world and what my message needs to be!" Ha! I think what I'm finding challenging is that in my business I will be combining the Alexander Technique (I'm currently in the middle of my training, so this is still developing...though my teaching is already so influenced by AT) with Voice Teaching (and my whole learning and performing experience journey there with voice pedagogy knowledge, professional Musical Theatre and the various other styles I have experience with) and Music Education (I've really been diving deep into the pedagogy of teaching) - all of this swirled into a new combination that I have not exactly experienced myself...so when I conjure up memories, I have several powerful ones that come to mind, but they are each in their own modality "containers"...something about figuring out how I am a unique combo of my past teachers and educational experiences feels...messy and uncertain and less clear than I would like. I'm going to sit with what images and memories came to me in the meditation and see what arises. Maybe things will gradually start to come into focus. Thank you <3

Hi Natalie! Yes - multiple modalities can make it much harder for teachers like us to come up with a mission statement - partially because it's easy to confuse WHAT you teach with WHY you teach it, and WHO you serve. When we are still in "training mode" we are very focused on the method, the process, and that's natural. Check out the full blog post at embodiedlearningsystems.com/why-you-need-a-mission-statement/ for some questions that will help focus your writing after the meditation, and reach out if you want more tips!

I really want the message I put out there to feel deep and reflect my core values and who I really am - I know it'll never completely capture that because of the nature of marketing, but...this embodied slow process really resonates with me right now.
