Jeremy has never been renowned for his love of cyclists and in our recent chat with him, he had plenty to say about them. Ferociously expensive cycle lanes, sweaty armpits and even their impact on the environment - it's fair to say he didn't hold back.

@@MusikCassette That doesn't work either... People need to commute and will never chose public transport, that doesn't from their suburb/village all the way to their place of work directly. You need to create a dense network of places, where you can legally park cars for free, then you can impose sizable fines for parking on the streets. But it won't work one without the other. If you only impose fines, people, who park there regularly will simply consider it as a cost of running their business, whatever it may be, and attempt to reflect that in their demanded wage/prices and all you'll achieve is creating inflation... Having these parking network paid for will have similar effects. Only building these parking places doesn't incentivize people to park there and move a bit on foot either... Only by creating penalty and acceptable alternative will you solve this.

his argument is tearing down trees to make a cycle lane they won't need because private cars are going to be banned in london by the same group deciding to tear down trees is bad for the environment.
@looseycanon
@looseycanon Жыл бұрын
Strictly speaking, you do exhale CO2, the best you can do for the environment is to breathe less, and therefore evade activities, which make you breathe more, like exercise... Now, the effect of something like this is minuscule, when compared other sources of CO2, but it is a contributing factor. No, the real problem is this. We only keep about 3% more energy now due to all the greenhouse gasses, than before industrial revolution. It would literally be easier and cheaper to increase cloud cover somewhere over the ocean, so that we would cover 3% more of Earth's surface and stabilize the climate. Remember, it's not the CO2, that is the problem here, the problem is, we don't know how to extract that extra energy from our atmosphere and either utilize it, store it or radiate it back in to space. And that is what's actually causing global warming.

Interesting points he made. I did some math regarding CO2 emissions by eating. According so some numbers I found somewhere, cycling burns about 20 kcal/km. Gathering some more numbers I found somewhere that the average consumption per person per day is around 3500 kcal and the CO2 emissions from food about 1100 kg/year, so that would mean 0.86 g CO2/kcal, or 17g/km. Even if you double that to have some safety margin, that's still a lot better than combustion cars with over 100g/km.

@bultvidxxxix9973
@bultvidxxxix9973 Жыл бұрын
Sure, a vegan cyclist may have less CO2 emission than a normal cyclist. I went with averages because I'd assume people would just scale up their normal consumption instead of eating specifically to offset the calories used to cycle. You could also say that cyclists should eat a teaspoon of sugar per km, which would be a lot better in terms of CO2. But I don't think that would be a realistic assumption.
@thebreifcaseman269
@thebreifcaseman269 Жыл бұрын
Add in the fuel it takes to transport that extra food needed to fuel the cyclists and the emissions from cows and pigs needed extra to feed the cyclists and then add on the extra emissions from cars having to travel at slower speeds for a longer time way below the speed limit and you would probably find it actually contributes to global warming just as much. So the only way to make it have less impact is to ruduce emissions from cars in the first place using electric cars. Problem with that is that will just increase energy usage for electricity dramatically and untill we Can make sure that all eclectic consumption comes from renewable sources then its still contributing to global warming. Another thing is then you jave to take into account the contribution to global warming when making these electric cars the battery and how long they last. The only way to make the efficient when it comes to global warming is to make them as long lasting as possible so new cars wont have to ba made over and over again in such large number but they wont they will make the batterys last a minimum of say 5 years maybe 10 and then they will need to be replaced as this is the most beneficial when it comes economically due to other things not needing to be replaced in a typical engine. No car company is thinking about the environment when making electric cars thay are thinking profit. And theres will stop if they are not using electric cars when new legislation comes stating that all new cars have to be electric. So why would they want there cars to be problem free for such a large amount of time. No one would need to buy a new car. So the only way around this is to make them to brake withing a certain time which is most likely foing to be either the moter or the batterys.

Not necessary. I am assuming you are referring to the "cutting trees to put cycling lines" bit (not to the ambulance being stuck in traffic). According to my rough calculations (rough because I took carbon consumption of an average tree from Google), it would take 60 trees a year to consume the same amount of carbon I would produce by going to work in my car (not a Humvee mind you) for a week. If cutting 60 trees would make at least one person go to work by bicycle it might be worth the trade. Of course, cutting trees is not an optimal solution, but not necessary a bad one.

There's an interesting fact that I think a lot of people like him overlook; some people drive cars because they want to, but most people drive cars because they have to. Give half the road to cyclists and public transport, and you'll have 1/4 the drivers remaining on the road. Sure you'll have half as much road to drive, but you'll have twice as much space on what's left.

More or less stating the obvious: Smart use of cycle lanes is how you save the environment. A worst case argument is where you have to remove trees and make roads more congessed by restricting traffic flow. Obvious statements like "bikes for short distance and long distance" or the like are contributing as most people I think can agree unless they are staunchly against/for cycle lanes. Though having better and cleaner public transport in my opinion is still no.1 on the list imo.

This just sounded like a lot of pessimistic cynical noise. most if not All the points made are wrong or kind of correct with the caveat that the ideas to move toward more walkable/bike-able living areas just need to be implemented differently. just because it's being implemented incorrectly doesn't make it wrong. Plus there is a difference between causation and correlation. For example, the congestion he mentioned would most likely still have been there without a bike lane. Many studies show that wider roads don't help much with widening roads to reduce congestions.

A bicycle's performance is extraordinarily efficient. In terms of the amount of energy a person must expend to travel a given distance, cycling is calculated to be the most efficient self-powered means of transportation.[1] In terms of the ratio of cargo weight a bicycle can carry to total weight, it is also the most efficient means of cargo transportation.
