"I bet all of the sounds mean something." Yes, you are correct... the "pendulum" is the ticking of a clock (thus the song title), while at the same time there is a heartbeat sound. A very simple-to-grasp musical explanation that your pulse is like a ticking clock and that one thing that definitely unites us all is the same, unstoppable progression of time. As others have pointed out in the comments, this song definitely hits you deeper as you get older.

Pink Floyd is Legendary! This song was written in 1972, 50 years ago, (I was 16 years old att), and it still holds up today as good as ever, maybe even more so! All Pink Floyd songs are like that, works of art. And the lyrics of this song,... impressive to say the least, especially when you realize it was written by guys in their mid 20s, very insightful young men. Incredible! I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since this album came out in 1973, the "Dark Side of the Moon" album. That album went 14 X Platinum, and sold over 50 million copies to date, (and still counting), and it spent 962 weeks on Billboards Top LP's of all time, that's over 18 years! Again, incredible.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.

Like the comment below mine says, it gets deeper the older you get. This is my favorite song from Pink Floyd, not only because it is brilliantly composed, but because of how impactful it is in our lives. I think of it as each verse is like the seasons of your life, Spring, (Youth) Summer (Adulthood) Fall (Middle Aged) and Winter (The final chapter of life). In the end he is filled with regret that he waisted so much time of his life and is waiting to die. The Church bells are soon to ring out for him. Then he ascends to "The Great Gig in the Sky" which is the next song on the album. DEEP!

I love seeing Pink Floyd open up to a new generation/crowd. This album was made the year I was born, so I listened to it all my life and wish I would of took the lyrics more literal back in the day. There's a great "Making of Darkside of the Moon" on Prime with all the original members remembering recording it, truly amazing.

One of the many takeaways from this song is that it is never too late to start. But never say never. The very day it becomes too late is the day you die.

Such a good review. We’re so busy running through our lives that we rarely stop to listen to our soul’s reaching out.

Sittin' here, sippin on my cuervo, watching this...as you sippin' and listening to my music, and talking about being in HS music programs...just like me. Just like me. Thousands of miles apart. Generations apart. But you bring us all together. Music is magic, because it can do this. Hello, Brother. We ARE one. Thank you for your post.

I absolutely love watching your reaction to this Pink Floyd excellence. I could see in your expressions that you completely got it. The David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright incarnation of Pink Floyd were onto something very special. Time happens to be my favorite Floyd song……and every single note, beat and vocal were exactly like it should be. A perfect song……

My youngest girl turned 33 yesterday, brother. It's amazing -- amazing -- how old I've become so quickly. And yet, while my body tells me so, I do not feel old.

This song should be played and it's meaning explained to every young person now and forever. It deals with mortality awareness and the transition from ignorance of one's mortality when young to the painful awareness of one's mortality as we age. It is a cautionary tale that the time we have on Earth is limited and growing shorter with each passing day, and that the time we do have is precious, limited, and should not be taken for granted or waisted on frivolous pursuits, or worse, the pursuit of nothing at all. Deepest lyrics of all time!

Dude, one of my favorite albums. Listened to it the other day. The lyrics are on point. "And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun" Its your life, get to it!

Amen to what you're saying about it never being too late. I'm 63, a late bloomer for sure, and I'm still actively doing the work I love, never giving up on my dreams. The only thing that'll stop me is death, is the way I feel. And even as a ghost I'll still be doing what I love, lol. And yes, this is a great song. This is one of the first albums I ever bought with money I earned as a dishwasher back in 1976.

Thanks for articulating this song so we'll. like you,I have a 25 year old daughter, who sadly self harmed recently within an inch of her young life. I made me me stand back and evaluate my own life and my journey,I am in bad health due to work accident and now i feel the true meaning to this song. to me,it's about life is short,we only have a short time here, and making the most of our lives is so important, especially our family and loved ones.

I had this explained to me about this song. The clocks and bells at the beginning is your birth. The "tolling of the iron bell' at the end is your funeral. Do not let your life get closer to the end before you "wake up" to see it has passed you by. That really drove the point deep.
