Classical Mechanics Lectures 06 | Holonomic Constraints | MSc Physics online classes - MSc Physics Lectures - Classical Mechanics by Sivakumar - In today's class, we learn how to classify the dynamical systems into autonomous, non-autonomous, holonomic systems. In the language of mathematics. I will explain these with examples. This way of explaining every minute detail will help weak students to raise up and clear the IIT GATE and similar examinations.
Classical Mechanics by Sivakumar is a series of rigorous classroom lectures for MSc (Physics) students. These lectures also will help the students clear the CSIR NET Physics, GATE, JEST, and the IIA entrance exams.
Recommended Readings:

I have 2 questions. 1) We see there can be more than one constraints present in a system of interest. My question is- Is it possible to have some constraints Holonomic and the rest are non-holonomic? If possible, then would that situation be taken wholely as Non-holonomic one? 2) You wrote Newton's equation of motion as negative(partial derivative of potential wrt "x") = mass.double derivative of "x" wrt time. Here we see "x" is there as both dependent and independent variable. Also the LHS is a partial differentiation, whereas RHS is an ordinary differentiation. So is this equation correct and solvable? Thanks Devismita Panda
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan 3 жыл бұрын
(1) Yes, finally it is non-holonomic if any one of the constraints is non-holonomic. (2) The LHS is the gradient of the scalar potential. Negative is arbitrary or not necessary. The potential is generally known such as that of gravity. Or, in other cases, the applied force is known and in that case there is no partial derivative. Therefore, finally, we only have 2nd order ODE which is solvable.

I have a doubt. You said if the constraint is non holonomic,like an inequality,the problem cannot be solved and the d.o.f can't be reduced. But if i take the total differential of the non holonomic constraint,then 'some' non holonomic constraints can also be used to reduce the d.o.f right?

thank you for the detailed explanation Sir. Helps clear a lot of unanswered questions. At the start while explaining the function example, f(x,y,t), You said 'y' may be present as x * y^0, while t may be present as x + t*0, any particular reason why 'y' has to be multiplied and 't' added on the RHS ? Can we consider the example where we have (x * t^0 ) OR (x + y * 0)
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan 2 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped. I have shown two ways to disappear the variables y and t. You are giving another way in which the same thing can be achieved. Any option is acceptable. So, you got the idea correctly.

Sir, Why holonomic constraint's equation should not involve velocity ?
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan
@ProfSivakumarRajagopalan 11 ай бұрын
Velocity means time derivative of position. So, equation containing velocity means a differential equation, which cannot be solved without an initial condition. Hence they are classified separately as velocity dependent potential problems, which may or may not be solvable depending on the nature of the physical problem.
