It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song. I'm not sure how many people appreciate the emotional gasps she produces here that absolutely melt me.

Thank you for the great reaction. I always learn something new! Personal Jesus is so iconic (and not that's not a word I use daily to describe everything from the omelet at breakfast to the latest celebrity to wear almost nothing on the red carpet) that it was difficult for me to separate the original from Diana's version but the tone is different. I find the original to be very dark while Diana's seems more...sincere. Performance wise I enjoyed the arrangement and it definitely suited her voice and vice versa. My favorite part is how she slipped so easily into character. Everything about her demeanor changed. Looking forward to another Diana Ankudinova reaction and would like to recommend Crow.

Another great analysis. I always learn a lot and end up with a deeper appreciation for every song. Diana is the world's most talented and interesting cover artist. I love this arrangement. I doubt I will bother listening to the original again. Diana's version just has so many quirky but great choices that make her version so interesting. I can easily listen to this version multiple times in a row, Please do Human, This is a Man's World, and Vorona (The Crow). Also take a look at Polina Gagarina singing Kukushka (The Cuckoo): the 2019 version with an Asian audience.

You’re seeing musical similarities with Wicked Game because both of these songs were arranged by the same person- Alexander Stepin. I think he has a great understanding of Diana’s voice There is another awesome song she sang on this show called “Crow” (Ворона in Russian, or “vorona” transliterated). It’s a classic Russian alt-rock/folk-rock song that I personally think has similar dark vibes to Personal Jesus. Diana said that it is her favorite performance on this show, although unfortunately the original artist has since banned her from singing it again. Nevertheless, her cover on the show remains and it’s worth checking out (the visual elements there are also stunning)
