Many years later I have found your video. Thank you for ruling out what didn't work. That saved me some time. I ended up using CLR, and it lightened my stain rather well. Hope this info is of use to someone. 😊

Thank you for being the only video that actually takes cleaning linoleum seriously and doesn't spout a bunch of nonsense about products and methods that obviously do not remove the real yellow stains that we are having trouble with. You won't believe how many videos tackling this dilemma reveal no solutions or miss the point completely and just show someone cleaning some dirt.

I've been told by flooring experts, that you should never put rugs on your floor that have the rubber backing. Over time the rubber causes the vinyl flooring to yellow and it's ruined in the spot where the rug was laying. If you have a vinyl floor and want to have area rugs they must have a carpet-like finish on both sides! Any use of a rubber type backing or use of a mat to stop sliding of the area rug will cause your vinyl floor to yellow!

It's not from not having light on it, it's from the rubber backing of rugs. The rubber backing is the culprit. It's chemicals leaching off the rubber.

I wanted to leave this comment and hopefully it can help someone else. So none of these items above really worked as you can see at removing a dark blue dye stain on my linoleum floor from my dog food bag. The alcohol and acetone worked best to lighten it but the blue dye was still very noticeable. So while doing some research on cleaning hair dye from bathtubs I found Soft Scrub with Bleach Cleanser (gel version) tried it on my white linoleum floor and it COMPLETELY removed the stained. You just need to leave it on and let it do it's magic. It does have bleach so you need to be careful using it. When I initially put it on, the stain faded but nothing happened. After letting it sit for 20-30 minutes the stain was gone. I am beyond ecstatic because I literally tried everything on all the websites I found.

Thank you for letting us know that these didn't work. Saves me the time. Anyway a long time ago I had some how spilled "liquid Sunlight" dishwasher detergent on my white linoleum floor. The next day when I noticed it, I wiped it right up. The spot was extremely bright white! 🤍🌞 So whatever the ingredients are just might do the trick.

my floors finally got back looking right after I took up the rugs for a few months, couldn't believe it but leaving the rugs off was all I had to do.

Lol.. I tried all that myself last night. I could have saved 2 hours if I had watched this. You are correct leaving the areas open for the sun to fade. I had a laminated wooden floor fade. I pulled the rug up, and now the floor is normal. Can't tell you how long it took. I was working 72 hours a week and just forgot about it till now. Great video . Thanks for the share

I moved into a house, we have that same lino and it has a big pink stain where they had a rug by tub. Thanks for sharing what you did. I read that you did find a solution, by leaving the floor empty.

I lived in an old building (early 1900's) many years ago. The kitchen floor was linoleum. I don't recall having stains, but I followed my mother's practice of stripping the floor periodically with a wax stripper, then rewaxing. Have you ever tried a wax stripper on this floor? You're using abrasive products which probably aren't good for the lino surface, such as Barkeeper's Friend. Stripping and rewaxing used to be the way everyone treated linoleum. Vinyl flooring has become more common, because most vinyl flooring tiles don't need such special treatment. Thanks for posting your efforts!

Thank you for this video and taking the time to show us which products don’t work. This saves us the time from going out and spending money on products that don’t work. My problem is quite the opposite...the places under my rugs in the kitchen and bathroom are lighter - the actual color of the linoleum, everywhere else has this ugly yellow discoloration. Arrgghhh!!! 😤 I have used a steamer, to no avail. I previously watched a video YTuber who used pure rubbing alcohol, I’m going to try that. Another Vlogger: Thrifty Living, used Mr Clean Magic Eraser. She did her entire floor and was very successful. it actually worked!!! Unfortunately, I live in an apartment, so I don’t have the privilege of changing out the discolored floors. Thanks again for this AWESOME VLOG. A few people are griping about why you posted... because products didn’t work. I think that sometimes it good to see the negative side of things, in this case, why and what products didn’t work, just to educate an enhance our knowledge about pros and cons of various products. I guess this is why linoleum people tell you to never use rubber backed rugs on linoleum. Crazy that nothing seems to work but you saved us all a lot of time on finding out. 🙏

The baking soda and vinegar won't work for sure. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. The two cancel each other out rendering them ineffective. So basically its just a waste of time to mix them together and try to clean.

Please try keeping the baking soda on for a few hours mixed with water. A book titled "The hidden chemistry in everything" says to let it soak and there will be a reaction between the baking soda and the grime. Won't take everything off, but it will take some off.

It’s the latex of the bottom of the rugs that react with the linoleum

I've tried bleach,viniger,lemon juice,wd 40,baking soda and astonish.None of the above have removed the yellow stains from my linoleum floor.

I've got the exact same problem. Tried industrial Soft Scrub with bleach on a stiff round brush in a drill, nothing. Tried carburetor cleaner soaking, nothing even with that. But it goes away on it's own? We'll see, I wonder if putting a UV light on it would speed that up.

I have this yellow thing around my toilet, is that normal? nothings leaking from under it and its like yellow really yellow on the behind, idk if its the shadow that makes it look darker, but is this linoleum too?

Strange. I had the opposite happen. The part of the linoleum covered with a rug for the last 10 years is beautiful and has no stains. The stains are everywhere NOT covered by a rug, presumably from aging.

Once before I used a straight baking soda paste on a bad carpet stain, I laid a damp rag over it and it drew the stain out , so now Im trying it on linoleum. Nothing added to the baking soda.

It's called oxidation. Nothing will work as it's bonded with the vinyl now. Cheap rubber wheels, cheap rubber backings on rugs, etc. cause it. You have to replace the floor or paint over it. Sometimes sunlight will get rid of it over time because it can be caused by the sunlight being blocked like in my bathroom with a box one time.

All those chemicals you put on there I was expecting an explosion 💥

Linoleum (Marmoleum is the brand name) is made from natural materials vs. Vinyl mainly from PVC. Linoleum, when exposed to light, its yellow tint would disappear. Not sure about the poor quality ones though. Vinyl however would yellow as it ages; you would need a restorer rather than some kind of cleaner to restore the original color, i.e. if it can be done at all.

I've got the exact same vinyl pattern here in New Zealand! Same yellowing but not as dark and no carpet has ever been on it. Thanks for trying.

First off the only thing you need to do is clean sweep take a mop bucket vinegar a little bit of soap do not use any ammonia based products it will damage the floor once dry take a spray bottle about half full rubbing alcohol two drops of Dawn dish soap and the rest hot water spray-on let's it for 2 to 3 minutes and get a dollar store scrub brush just slow circular motions shop towels work best like the blue roll just slowly go over it it will restore it back to its original design and color as long as you did not damage the vinyl or linoleum then allowed to dry take a cleaner mop wash with just a little bit of vinegar and hot water as hot as you can stand it then you want to get vinyl or linoleum polish which will keep stains from coming back clean and polish at least every 6 months to keep up with basic maintenance as simple as that

Good to try different products. Mine is not stained, mine has grease dirt in the texture. bleach seems to be cutting right through it, but afraid it will make it dull. But, who cares I will lay some shine on it. One guy on here tried rubbing alcohol.

I have the same stains on the same linoleum.

I tried leaving the bleach on for a few hours , didn't work, I tried scrubbing it with a paste of lemon juice and baking soda, didn't work, I let it sit on a spot and tried again, didn;t work, I tried bar keeper friend powder or liquid. Mr clean didnt work eigther, I think what happened, is the prior owner tried to clean it with ammonia, then they had an untrained dog having accidents on the throw rug, with the throw rugs disintigrating, they are just random yellow spots all over the floor , in no particular pattern, i tried a green scubby, a blue scrubby pad and a white mr clean eraser,thanks for showing us what DOESNT work ;-)

It's the rubber backing on the rugs. I have a spot too from previous owners. I think the only solution is replacing the vinyl. Mine has been exposed to sun for 10 years. Still there. :(

Magic eraser and some all purpose cleaner is hell of a thing

i have got a vinyl floor. unfortunately I had a carrier bag that was wet and the ink from the carrier bag logo has literally imprinted onto the vinyl floor. I have tried everything to remove it, CIF (common UK household product), bleach, hair spray, nail polish remover, toothpaste, heavy duty cleaning, stain remover brush, you name I've tried it! And sadly nothing has worked. For those of you who are experienced at this or know a thing or two about vinyl floor I would appreciate your help/advice as I'm worried i will lose my rent deposit over this! Thank you!

Just read e how video. Lady says it is a reaction from rubber. That's makes sense for you and I have a rubber mat over my floor. She recommends 1 tablespoon of baking powder with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. After that putting on a sealer. I tried it and left it on for a bit. The yellow stain has gone so very pleased. I didn't put on a sealer as the whole floor isn't affected.

I've the same problem the lino is only new four months tried everything but no luck think I need a pro cleaner at this rate

I responded to a 911 call where a lady had mixed different cleaners and suddenly couldn’t breathe. She damaged her lungs. Please be careful mixing things together.

The stains are from the artificial rubber backing on your rugs. Laminate and rug chemicals = yellow. I haven't managed to get rid of my stains either.

I tried lemon juice not sure it has helped but it does seem lighter. let us know if you did try the black light and the results please.

Just saw a video, using magic eraser and soapy water. Took heaps off. Going to try it on my floor, yuk from previous tenant

If you want you coukd try to mix 1 cup peroxide, 3 tbsp baking soda , and a drop of dish soap. Let it sit on the stain as long as needed til gone (3-6 hours not 20 mins ) it works like magic on pee stains on mattresses.

Mercy, I was waiting for the floor to explode! Bar Keepers' friend + vinegar + peroxide = Boom! I got a little worried when they were all mixing together. I thought this might be a "cautionary tale" video! lol.

Thanks for posting these tests. These shouldn't even be published as solutions - I had the same experience, going to try dosing my floor with a floodlight.

I put vinyl tile on my kitchen floor which is turning yellow where the sun hits it, and there's no carpeting? The rest of the floor which is not exposed to the sun is fine? I must admit this yellowing situation or explanation of it not getting sunlight or was covered with a rubber mat is driving me nuts because in my case it doesn't apply. This is a rental so I need to find a resolve or replace the entire floor before I move. Argh!

Baking Soda is only working as a abrasive in this use. The material itself has yellowed. So you need to either use a very fine sand paper,/800, 1000 It will make it dull, and you would see it in certain angles, but if would help get rid of the yellow. BarKeeper may have citric acid in it. Either way, you best bet is Comet with some good scrubbing to have the bleach eat through that top micro layer.

The spot in my kitchen doesn't really get much sunlight. Would a UV lamp have a similar effect?

Tried Oxy Clean and 35% Hydrogen peroxide in two test spots over night. No change with the Oxy, but the peroxide test spot was significantly lighter. So I put the 35% peroxide in a spray bottle and misted the area for two nights (10-12 hrs) and left a bright white fluorescent light on the area to help with the bleaching process. No abrasive scrubbing to dull the flooring, just mist and wait... works great! 35% Hydrogen peroxide can burn the skin... so, use gloves and keep kids and pets away from treated areas until you mop up the peroxide.

you could try black light that produces uv light uv is what fades things normal light isnt as harsh you could put a light in there for a few days and compare that way ... just a thought

The rubber or latex back on rugs do this to linoleum floors. Not that they didn't change their rugs or the sun, the reaction of the backing on the rug to the linoleum itself. Just so you know...

I have the same problem. It’s more likely the stain is from dyes or possibly the backing on the rug.

Try some Lime Away. Worked for my white kitchen sink stained with coffer

I tried Restore4 abt. 5 yrs ago.. fantastic product.. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it anymore.. I swear it works so good. U see the effect within 20 min.. I wish I can post the bottle here. It’s only restores Vinyl, Linoleum, Formica and Corian

When using these chemicals give them time to work almost right up to the point where they evaporate the chemistry is they need to soak it takes time.

The key to these products would be to let them sit for 20 minutes or so. So the products still could have worked but weren’t given enough time.

When you put anything rubber on linoleum it turns yellow. Probably bath mats or rugs with non slip rubber bottoms.

I'm own a floor cleaning and restoration small business and there is no way to remove that as far as I know. It's caused by the breakdown in the latex backing on many small rugs. Just look out when they start to yellow it's time to replace them

The yellow stains are from rubber backed rugs. The rubber deteriorates and stains the linoleum

Comet takes stains from shower really good. so it might do as well on floor

I think that Melaleuca Solumel or straight up Tea Tree oil will work. It will break down the surface which was permanently corrupted. The floor will need a polishing afterward though. ;)

From what I’ve read you need to let the cleaning products set on the floor for 10 minutes before scrubbing it in.

you're supposed to pour the vinegar on the floor then the baking soda on top and the chemical reaction is what takes off the stain.

I have the same problem but my spots are red. I bought throw rugs from JC Penny’s and after awhile there were red spots on my vinyl. Ive tried everything and nothing budges it. 😢😢😢

The yellow is a chemical reaction and is especially common in mobile and manufactured homes. The solution is not cleaning, you have to reverse the chemical reaction. You need a strong hydrogen peroxide such as the hair dye developer from Sally beauty supply. It removes yellow from mini blinds, plastic tubs, retro kids toys, appliances, etc.
