You might be hearing about states and countries legalizing psychedelics. In 2020, Oregon became the first US state to decriminalize psilocybin and legalize it for therapeutic use. In 2022, Colorado followed suit. Researchers have recently been touting the benefits of psychedelics for health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, cancer-related distress, and the list goes on. However - like cannabis - psilocybin is still illegal under US federal law.
Given that ongoing fight, you might have questions. I know I do. Are psychedelics the next weed? Is that a good thing? Are psychedelics dangerous? Do they actually have scientific benefits? How do psychedelics work? In this episode of Huge If True, we find out.

My parents have both done therapy sessions involving psychedelics. My dad used to be constantly angry and snapping at everyone if you don't do exactly what was said right away and mom has progressively gotten afraid of her own shadow. After the sessions, I told my dad for the first time I'm taking a break from school. I fully expected retaliation and him to make me suffer. What I got instead, was advice on how to handle my mental health and not give up on school. He's pushing me to go to therapy and my whole family to get the help we need. It isn't a miracle drug. The drug is not what made this change. However, it helped him get new incites in to what we're feeling, how he feels about everything amd everyone, and how he chooses to see the world. Mom just had her first session but she's making small strides to betterment. I feel like I lost my family a long time ago and now I feel like I'm getting them back again. It's truly a time to be alive.

My ex step-mom is a narcissist, and doing psychedelics twice, made her legit get to her senses both times. She was so genuinely shocked and apologetic about her behavior, is like for the first time ever she was present and we could talk to her and be listened, she wasn’t on an eternal monologue anymore… then it wears off and is like her defense mechanism returns, and she’s not focusing her eyes on you anymore, back at living an alternative life where she’s the main character and we’re just part of her storyline, always trying to screw her up and take her shine and that’s why she’s always so unhappy.. I want more than anything for narcissism to be cured somehow, and maybe this may be one step to the solution if one is ever possible…

what you are really doing right now is what the hippies did back then. what psychedellics, and its promotion, really does, is allows you to plant more chaos in news and events. you really even just lets the door open in your video, just exactly for this. (by you i mean the entire channel and its supporters. you are just a hippie actor, like all actors.) which is what you are really after, and what the hippies were after, in the past. for people like you and hippies, its liberating. and over 80% of the world populace is actually like this. so, there is no problem with promoting widespread psychedellics, legally, as 80% of the goverment is yours the world over. the issue hoever is, you goal is to generate fear. and the possibility that psychedellics could be legal soon, generates more fear, then, if psychedellics are legal and everyone already uses them. which is why, you will never make psychedellics legal, but always make it appear that, there is a big push going on, and psychedellics will soon be legal. its the same as, how, savegery is always appearing to be increasing, but it never really does. unless you rebrand "psychedellics", and come up with another thing, another brand, to generate fear, you will never make psychedellics readily available. generating fear is the real medicine of the many.

As a person who has social anxiety, I can see how this can really help! Imagine if you have an irrational fear of people because of your past experiences, which might not be significant to others but to you personally has become a point of trauma. What I would give to be able to reset my brain and clear it of the irrational fear I have of just so many things... Fears that I don't even understand fully why it happens, just that I feel its to do with how my brain decided to rewire itself due to past trauma. If you could hit the reset button on all that, imagine the years not wasted trying to rewire the brain, and instead just hit reset and start fresh! Quality of life improvement, hell yeah!

I have struggled with ADD/ADHD for most of my life, and I am in my late 50's. After failed efforts of trying Ritalin and Adderall, and dealing with negative side effects of those drugs, a close friend talked me into micro-dosing LSD. In desperation, I tried it. It has completely changed my life. I am a completely different person. I kept it secret from my closest friends for almost a year, but people who had known me for years talked about how I seemed like a different person, someone who was comfortable in their own skin, relaxed, self assured, thoughtful, measured. They would always joke by saying "What ever you're taking I want some of that" and I would just smile and not tell them what had changed me lol. I fear that these types of treatment will never be legal because the corrupt pharma companies have too powerful of a lobby in Washington. Pharma companies want people to remain sick. Their worse fear would be for our population to become more healthy.

And if you go with black market, you better know you can trust your source with your life, because some unscrupulous individuals will maybe lie about what they are selling and sell you drugs that really can and do kill people. Regulated and supervised drug use would probably result in far fewer deaths but right now there are a lot of fentanyl deaths, so be very careful with that. (Also you could go to jail in many jurisdictions; if you care about your freedom you should look at what's legal where you live.)

Good segment. I'm happy that this area is moving forward. What's missing from this is mentioning that the toxicity, physiologically, of mushrooms, DMT and LSD is practically zero. Also the fact almost everybody( apart from the very few who should not go near them) can get benefits and new perspectives from taking these compounds. Not just the people who suffer from the maladies discussed above. If you are sound of mind and reasonably happy, we also should be able to take these things and have some fun and have our brains re-wired from time to time. These things are non-addictive!

DONT DO PSYCHEDELIC DRUGS IF YOU ARE NOT READY!!! I don’t know how to stress this enough, if you are anxious at all before you trip it is best not to take the risk, you need to know what you are going to do while you are tripping before you begin your trip (your going to forget but it’s good to have a game plan if you get bored or start having a bad trip), and always have a trip sitter. Only take about 100 micrograms or 1 tab of acid at the most for your first time and it would probably be better if you did less. If your doing shrooms start with 1-1.5 grams. Normally if you want a true psychedelic experience on shrooms people say take 3.5 grams. DO NOT TAKE A FULL DOSE UNTIL YOU HAVE ALREADY TRIED THE PSYCHEDELIC I cannot stress this enough. You are not ready for it. Start slow follow those rules and I promise you will have a good time.

It was the opposite for me. I had no idea what I was getting into, took 7gs with some friends and I was transported into another realm. It felt like i was there for a long long time. But it was also great because I had no idea what I was getting into. Now that I know a lot about them, I just freak out every time. But not everyone will have the same experience I did. Being with good friends probably saved me from freaking out
@AcenDurran
@AcenDurran Ай бұрын
This is 100% true. But also, having someone there to trip sit you makes a HUGE difference. I remember, me and a couple of my friends did acid for the first time not knowing how it was, and the first 2-3 hours were good, we were watching cool videos and having a laugh but then we got bored and everyone just went back home, and then it got dark for me. On the other hand, I was trip sitting my friend who was doing acid for the first time and he had an AMAZING experience. He still talks about it to this day lmao 😂. His entire trip was amazing because I was there with him making sure no negative energy could ruin his trip. Because once a bad vide or a bad thought is brought up or thought about while doing psychedelics, it’s almost impossible to make your mind stop racing about the topic. So, I made sure he and I were in a good mood the entire time. I agreed with everything he was saying and kinda just kept a chill vibe. It was great, but I wish someone was there to do that for me. That is very important.

I really appreciate not only the discussion of psychedelics but also the way the researcher characterized PTSD, depression, smoking, alcoholism as a "narrowed mental and behavioral repertoire". I found that description to be profound in its economy of words. I think that was very validating to the experience of being stuck in one of those ruts. And the prospect of something to help blast yourself out of one is just incredible.

I've taken esketamine treatments for a year, it was FDA approved in 2019 and you basicly go into a hospital to get it and stay there supervised for 2 hours. People with major depression are quite cynical about treatments, since the success rates after the first couple of meds you try are nearly none existent. But what I found was that (most) people really appreciated and were grateful for the effects of this one. It's not perfect and didn't make anybody a fully functioning person again, but it's really helpful. As far as how it feels, for me it's like meeting myself without all the negative emotions I harbored towards myself over the years. That makes room for self compassion and feeling more at ease for some days after the treatment as well. Despite all that it's limited, and hasn't done all I've hoped it would. After a year it didn't feel as effective as it was in the beginning, but I was also in a better place(relatively) and couldn't justify the price tag and the fact that someone on the huge waiting list could benefit from it more than I was(very limited number of spots since it takes place in a hospital). But it's been so much more effective than any treatment I've received before and made me a lot more hopeful and excited for the treatments to come once they're made widely available!

Depressed people are cynical about everything, it's a core trait of depression. This is why psychedelics are so powerful in treating depression, they break up deeply rooted thought patterns and expand people's mind so they can see past their own cynicism. I don't think ketamine is nearly as effective as LSD or psilocybin though, just speaking from extensive experience.

Try psilocybin or LSD. Ketamine provides dissociative relief for symptoms, but other psychedelics work almost exactly opposite. They shove your face into the ground of reality and say, “are you sure about all this?” Trips for me are never easy but they do this and unlock a lot of memories and with them comes cathartic healing.

Thank you, Cleo, for an informative and helpful video. The '60's and '70's bracketed my young adult years. Back then, you could be offered a "toke" from a "joint"-Marijuana cigarette just by catching a ride with a friend in his car. As I matured and married, the anti-drug fervor gripped the country. A great deal of shame was doled out as parents and authority figures showed disgust towards any and all who were experimenting with Marijuana or mushrooms. I am in my early 70's now and have been plagued by clinical depression most of my life. I have found some relief through my faith, alternative medicines, and meditation techniques. Your videos are encouraging and helpful, pointing the way for younger generations to find relief and new tools to overcome emotional and behavioral challenges they may encounter on their life journey.

Measured approach is always the way to go. Establishing widespread public policies on something that's not fully understood based on fear is wrong on so many levels. Cleo did an awesome job to articulate this: that it stifled decades of what would've been meaningful research. But better late than never. I have been dealing with anxiety my entire life and I honestly want to try psilocybin to treat this condition. I've tried everything from meditation, anti-anxiety meds, exercising, etc., but I'm still dealing with anxiety. More manageable yes, but the ever present, underlying feeling of anxiety sucks. Anyway, great video Cleo. I honestly get inspired by how you and your team present the information.

Psilocybin is definitely worth trying! It may not cure your anxiety, but it can greatly help. LSD can also be very helpful, it's a more intense trip that can get incredibly emotional, but I've always found it beneficial. The most important thing is to remember that the hallucinations are temporary (it's good to write down the dose and the time at which you took them as a reminder), and also don't do psychedelics around strangers or people that don't approve of it, they can absolutely ruin the whole thing. Happy tripping!

What I got was way more than I expected. I was expecting an exciting and interesting trip, but what I got was a truth about myself and my family that I had somehow buried since childhood. It not only revealed a deep truth about me and my family, but it allowed me to continue with truth in my life. Not only that, but for the first time in my life, I felt some kind of presence if you will, a higher presence that some would call religious. I felt connected to the world around me in a way I had never felt before. I will forever be grateful to that experience and wish more people could have something similar, I think it could genuinely help a lot of people in ways they don't even realize.

Another great video Cleo! I love the way you objectively handle the topic. Having some experience with psychedelics in my youth, one of the biggest problems and what drives a lot of the negativity toward them, is that on the street, you don't really know what you're getting. There can be contamination. Mixing the drug with other drugs. You don't really know the dose you're taking.It's a free-for-all. And honestly some people just can't handle them. It's too strange. With regulated purity, dosing and in some cases supervision, I can see how psychedelics could be very therapeutic.

I took psilocybin a few years ago and, besides allaying my anxiety for months after, I can definitely say it was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. It completely changed my perception of the world in the most positive and profound way, and I think about the experience on a nearly daily basis. I can only hope others can experience the same journey and effects themselves.

It's fantastic that psychedelics are finally getting some research again. As a person who has previously used psychedelics on occasion, I just cannot imagine doing mushrooms at a doctors/therapists office. It sounds so bizzare and I think that would give me a bad trip. The natural place to do psychedelics is in the woods or a nature setting, preferably with music and friends so you can laugh and explore a new world together in a more relaxed setting where you don't feel trapped or under any pressure and if it were to turn bad in your head you've got people there you know and trust to help get you back to enjoying it again.

The woods would certainly be a good setting for the experience as long as an uninvited grizzly bear or a pack of wolves don't show up to spoil the party.

You took them to party. The doses they are talking about in these settings are much more and much more potent. It’s not meant for college kids to party this is for terminally Ill patients. There’s always a shaman involved and their experiences were way beyond anything you lightly dabbled in. It has helped people whom are going to die within months no longer fear death.

There's also micro dosing which has a benefit but I think it's missing the point, if I needed serious help I'd go to mother aioaska. I'm sure the treatment room would be conducive to a safe trip, the therapist must have some training akin to shamanism dealing with this stuff.

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."

@Ryan88881
@Ryan88881 6 ай бұрын
@@kylecarter1599 I know but the respect and reverence should be essentially boundless. The fear should be minimal but probably still there if your methodologies and dosing are sufficient. Good or bad, heavyweight psychedelics like LSD, Psilocybin Mushrooms, Ayahuasca, and Ibogaine are still formidable even when they're a blast. But something like Ibogaine supposedly never being a blast, or even tolerable during most of it. And Ayahuasca is so unpredictable. And with LSD, synchronicity goes so mad that the environment has to be so controlled but even this seems impossible to eliminate, only tune down and mitigate. Like you will look at the clock to see just randomly what time it is and it will not only be exactly midnight, not only exactly a start of a new week, but even a new month. Or storms will come out of nowhere, or unforgettable encounters with the weirdest people you've ever met or will ever meet in the weirdest situations and you just become all surreally twisted-out. That’s my theory on Acid at least. Regardless of psychedelics amazingly strong transducing of synchronistic phenomena even in the physical world, especially LSD. In many ways the emotio-cognitively, 'walking on egg-shells', hyperdimensional, meta-moralistic vulnerability-floodgates of the numinous tryptamine (especially base-tryptamine) compounds make almost even the extreme passivity of Nightshade-Datura related states seem preferable. When you get into high/strong dose areas of even oral hashish, let alone Ibogaine or Datura, Brugmansia, etc. You get into ascetic territory. Ordeal; a classic ascetic theme. Self-mortification for anthropic dignity. And this is a big thing with ayahuasca too; is not only purging but 'pain'. The "drama and pain" and nobility of life and death, social tension and struggle, health and disease, the Earth, animals and plants, etc. And psilocybin counters this theme of pain with ayahuasca with its own archetype of fear. Of unnerving, dark, jaw-dropping, uncannily creepy, emotional repulsion to the darkly ambiguous and emotionally shuddering, madhouse implicative psychological sensations of horrifying *unknowingness* or even abject terror and emotive fright. At least when invited that is. Especially with the psilocybe semilanceata species supposedly. Fresh (as in non-dried) psilocybe cubensis always made me feel more heavy and gave sort of a stronger, more self-exploratory experience. And I find psilocybin overall; to usually instead be pretty extrospective and outer-space oriented which is interesting because all of the others seem to have mostly, or even exclusively (such as mescaline) terrestrial motifs whereas the psilocybe mushrooms give off this whole.. idiosyncratic, quirky, zany, Irish, eerie, Mag Mell, elfin/fae, gnomic vibe but also blended and overlapping (or even predominated) by this really unconventional, kind of futuristic, galactarian, sci-fi, dramatic, Wagnerian, hortatory, species-based, destiny-based, humanitarian, transdimensionally tele-communicational, extraterrestrial, bio-technical life-force that is some kind of high-throughput, information and 'teaching' system that is more focused on knowledge and learning than ‘healing'. And it's so esoterically functional, overtly theologically and epistemically-charged, and with such preeminence, that I think we now quite visibly deserve a new spiritual signifier for the classical, (semi-lost) Western Esotericism tradition so as to make these epistemological and/or spiritual disciplines more focal and central in the western mind and culture. And just something to replace the idealist, neo-Tibetan, LSD/Cannabis-based, hippie-esque, New-Age movement and the 'Eastern mysticism' tropes or Huxley-esque echoes of the late 1960s and early 70s that still dominate much of the psychedelic and entheogenic world still. Right now we're heading back into the psychotherapeutic induction of these things and while they certainly are therapeutic in unparalleled ways and at many levels, they also are higher-dimensional mathematical operands perturbing (or retracting back) your conscious subjective state of awareness into higher mathematical spatial topological areas. In other words; math's way of saying "higher reality". This of course not at all being unusual for an information system with conductive nodes and wiring and semiconductors all running on electromagnetism; which is our brains and neural networks. That's also digital computers. Well we do this higher computational spatial-dimension stuff with normal digital computers all the time. It doesn't explain the phenomena of subjectivity, but it does shed light on the mere mathematical modalities of the apparent controversial topic or headline of "higher-dimensional perception", because it's just a functional operation in mathematical topology. A precise, molecularly-structured specific surface-binding, agnostic action affecting the conductivity of certain associated synapses resulting in a Euclidian manifold-related quantum-field phenomena. The same type of quantum-mathematical phenomena as those observed experimentally, and even just mundanely with computers, as well as with the regular functionalities or interactions happening at the nanoscale or subatomic (especially electron-level) scale in general; which these neuronal "drug" activities are occurring at in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, the mind is not a physical extension of the cells, atoms or particles in the cytoarchitectural recesses, but rather an electromagnetic radio waveform traversing from a higher-spatial source simply down into three-dimensional biogenic, organic nervous tissue; so that such an entity living in three-dimensional mathematical planes of existence can therefore experience itself through sentience. Well, like an information system with computational 'qualities', the electrical activity of cell-surface neuronal phenomena interfacing with the drug molecules at the bond site seems to inadvertently create a mathematic and computational operation. And in that higher, mathematical, topological space or manifold; you meet non-personally conscious nor unconsciously-related, but rather separate, higher intelligences or beings. And you are simultaneously bombarded with all kinds of other effects and feelings of course. But the 'thing' always has these strong intentional tones and harshly anti-reductive messages about metaphysics and this reflection on ‘magic’ and Otherness. And a simian-concentrated strong sense of epistemic humility in psilocybin’s case. Then there's the reoccurring, thematic, archetypal, motif-like nature of the trip that is sort of forefront, but also somewhat in the background; like the things I mentioned earlier about psilocybin or a bit with ayahuasca. But so they are a shamanic function. Arguably a divinatory one. We wont understand this stuff with just secular, non-scenic or non-phenomenologically proximate interventions, or even dissecting of the anterior cingular cortex. Probably wont at least be until fully-realized quantum computing comes around that such temporally polynomial-destroying formulas for consciousness and its quantum-prone, electrodynamic, mathematical-spatially-spastic abilities are finally computed and accepted. And/or insight into the mechanistic dynamics of how the bonding of these drug molecules really work, or what these plants, fungi, lichen or even oozy toad-secretions within the biome are actually trying to tell us. When you meet enough psychonauts/travelers and discern the archetypes, it becomes more or less apparent, albeit still open-ended what the “messaging” is all about. I'm not sure if we can contemporarily, as Westerners however; come to accept the 'message' of say, the antimuscarinic Nightshades like Datura in the way the West did in Ancient Greece, during Mycenaean and Hellenistic times. Not necessarily at the mystery rites at Eleusis (Elefsina); but certainly with the Maenads of Thrace, as well as the Delphic Oracle of Apollo. Maybe we can't socioculturally afford the maenadic, Occult-like, chthonic, witchy, sacral, dementing, lunar, bloody, morbid, malicious, herbalist, superstitious and empowering message imparted by the tropane-containing nightshade entheogens such as datura. Even though their conveyed theme of 'empowerment' seems to be yet again, geared in the way of the feminine. These things bizarrely enough, seem to actually have 'target demographics'. So maybe we can’t handle Sanderson Sister-types, or even “Rose the Hat”-types. But *surely* we can't be so chicken-shit these days, as moderns that we somehow can't embrace a realist, refined, meta-Hellenism/Mycenaean, culturally distinguished, esoteric but still spiritual and dignified form or hybrid-ontology of psychedelic, ritual plant-shamanism. Or at least a "biogenic shamanism/esotericism." But either way; theology, or ritual or merely tradition through nature, not scripture. And also not through 17th-century, dogmatic, purely faith-driven, Cartesian materialism/physicalism. Which is practically just another ideologically-unwavering religion posing as "philosophy". Such cultish philosophies have nothing to do with science, yet it's co-opted many or most of its authorities to the point of befuddlement and regression. The only method, the only *thing* that will be there when you strip it all away (the societies, architecture, culture, literature, worldvews) is going to be nature.
