Here are some things that I think make a good 5E spellcaster in general: -At least 2 damaging cantrips for conserving spell slots or as a last resort (such as fire bolt or sacred flame); -Lower level spells that will remain useful at higher levels, especially ones which use your reaction or bonus action or last a period of time and don't use your concentration (such as shield, healing word, grease or blindness); -Mid level burst damage or healing spells, especially ones which have high damage or a big AoE (such as scorching rays, fireball or mass healing word); -Higher level buffs or crowd control spells which can use your concentration and make your allies more effective (such as fear, haste, freedom of movement or banishment); -Some spells which have synergy with your class features; -A few utility or social spells, especially cantrips or rituals (such as mage hand, minor illusion, charm person, alarm, invisibility, water breathing or tiny hut)

For a Cleric (Mountain Dwarf of course) I take Sacred Flame, Toll the Dead and Word of Radiance as cantrips to free up spell slots for healing and utility

Arcana Cleric with Wiz Ritualist feat...basically get both in one?

Just take one level of arcana cleric, finish it off with 19 levels of Abjuration wizard. Healing, ward, armour, spell resistance, & Cantrips for days.

My favorite combination was Storm Sorc / Tempest Cleric. Its the best feeling when you quicken Lv.5 Call Lightning and activate it twice along with tempest clerics channel divinity twice as well, erasing the Bigbad in first round.

I went with a gnome wizard who prioritizes battlefield control over damage; spells that push, knock prone, mind control, etc. Full support character of the illusion school. Can cast minor illusion to give himself full cover then harass the enemy with spells that force saving throws and/or give advantage to my allies. The Dwarf wizard is more a standard magic artillery type but he took 2 levels of Tempest cleric one, for the armor and some point defense with Wrath of the Storm and two, to maximize damage on a lightning or thunder spell once a day with Channel Divinity.

Loved the debate at the beginning. I wouldn't mind seeing more of these comparison videos because we ALL see lots of builds and styles on different forums but I like apples to apples comparisons.

My stratagy for clareick I recommend Spirit Guardian Spectral weapon as bonus can also give your ally advance to hit if it’s with 5 foot Then ither told dead heal spell some other spell or philacall attack or doge becase ya don’t want to lose Concentration enimys have disavange to hit you on that spirit Guardian Has saved me and my party many times

current campaign i am running a high elf knowledge cleric (6), took Fey Teleportation at (4) for those Misty Steps, and now just took (2) levels of wizard (Divination) for Portent. Will then go straight cleric. Holy Wizard, much fun.

Built an Enchanter using the variant Tiefling spell list, going Bard for the first 6 levels, taking spell sniper, then going GOO warlock (pact of the tome). fairly good at pretty much everything, took expertise in cha based abilities like persuasion and deception. 4th level in warlock went for spell sniper with the cha damage to Eblast and ESpear invocation, could really hit hard from a distance and control the field in close quarters. outside of combat, between the "free" castings if charm person and having high cha and bonuses, I was definitely the Face of the group. next build, The Nuke. half caster who does insane damage in one burst, not sustainable but still effective

When a Cleric and Wizard work together I remember they could back in 3.5 could literally create their own plane of existence. A combo of a permanancy spell on one side and a create something spell.

Have you guys tried using a Zeal Cleric from Planeshift Amonkhet? You get haste, shatter and fireball. As well as using channel div to max thunder and fire damage. You also get proficient in heavy armor and martial weapons, and It has the war cleric ability to attack as a bonus action :)

Went with my tempest cleric for 10 levels, it was an absolute blast.

Really like the cantrip combination of firebolt and toll the dead. One is attack roll and other is saving throw. Also have noticed very few things are resistant to both. (At least in MM and volo's)

I like the cleric wizard combo. All the spells with weapons and armor proficientcies from the cleric alittle more hit points not much depends on the split. Also depending on school and faith you can come up with interesting combos or alot of synergy. :D

Favorite of mine is 1 level druid for primal savage for a scaling cantrip that does decent as it out does shillelagh after lv 5 more so at 11 leaving a hand free for casting. Add on faerie fire and primal savage to restrained enemy's and unlike web allow yours to walk in in difficult but no rist of restrain themselves. All up a lot of control and stable damage Then 19 lv of grave cleric because with battlefield control and perfect healing if some one falls is a great support who can dish out attack at the same time

I love playing an Arcane cleric (8th level for Wisdom to cantrips and Spellbreaker to end effects, Mass Healing Word to synergise with this and you get a tonne of abjuration spells) plus the rest of the levels into Abjuration Wizard, stopping spells, getting tonnes of hp for your Arcane Ward (Death Ward, Freedom of Movement, Shield etc) and recover spell slots. It's also quite effective against liches with your bonuses to Dispel magic (Contingency, Invulnnerability, Mind Blank and other effects). Basically you can end the bad effects on your party and the buffs on the BBEG

I made a Divine Sorcerer with Pact of the Blade Old God Warlock. So I’d call on my Spiritual weapon which was an armored tentacle sucker hand and I’d dump my smites into the spiritual weapon. Meanwhile I could affect and control enemies while being a nice backup healer for the party. They were all healed by the light of my ancient patron, Squithloth.

Wasn't a fan of clerics till I saw the spell sniper booming blade warcaster Dex based whip using tempest cleric. Looks so Frickin fun. So much damage and battlefield control. Oh yeah and heals and stuff.

Tempest Cleric. Team player, good offence and can melee a bit. Guidance, bless, healing word, thunderwave, shatter (max out), spiritual weapon, spirit guardians, call lightning, sleet storm, etc. Human V. Feats: Dual wielder, war caster. Also get to "Rebuke" for 2d8 damage if hit. So much for turning the other cheek. Your going to run out of slots so melee is a must when wearing heavy armor.

Sorcerer/Warlock. Lots of customization. SR slots, unique invocations, full of flavour. 2 weak overally classes become one of the most potent multiclasses with potentially infinite spell slots. (Tome, Aspect of moon no need for sleep, use warlock slots for sorc points, sorc points to normal slots, short rest, repeat. conversion rate is determined by warlock level, Infinite slot level is limited by your sorc level)

I'm pretty sure War Caster doesn't allow you to use whatever in your hands as an arcane focus, it only allows you to perform the somatic components of spells while holding a shield or weapon in both hands. If you want to cast a spell with a material component, you would still need to interact with your arcane focus. This can still be achieved if you can make one of these items your focus: having your holy symbol on your shield for paladins and clerics, taking the improved pact weapon invocation for bladelocks, or obtaining a Ruby of the War Mage to stick on your weapon. I'm sure there's other ways too, but unless I'm missing something simply taking War Caster doesn't let you cast spells with material components when your hands are full.

Tempest cleric- thunderwave is a domain spell

a wizard with magic init.( druid ) to get goodberry adds some helpful healing, and your choice of some helpful cantrips that could combine with that Warcaster feat. you get an AOO and cast thornwhip "Where do you think you are going?" lol

I personally tend to go for full on spam of summonables and bonuses / auras; so i tend to go for Wizard artificer; i can hand some neat potions to team; summon a tower; summon a chariot and top it off with some mephits to defend the area....And in free time i can just chill anbind some neat summons ; ) Always awesome to hand a squad of mephits to teammate - "Here; let them lay theire lives for youre cause"

Playing as a 2 hexblade lock / 4 shadow magic sorc at the moment having mad fun as a blaster, using a medium armor setup with the hexblade kit and cursed rapier, the char is centred around the warlock rp, but is trying to return to his own powers, i use EB as a primary attack source and take pure utility spells through sorcerer, really fun so far!

How do you guys like the Giantsoul Sorcerer in UA? Going with a Dwarf Stormsoul, picking up toughness, you're looking at an extra 6hp/level for a melee sorcerer, using cantrips like Lightning Lure & shocking grasp for frontline roles.

Dave, check out Animate Objects. You can control 10 tiny objects, copper coins or whatever, for 1d4 +4 damage each or a possible 10d4 +40 bonus action damage every round.

honestly the character i want to play most atm, is a beast ranger life cleric 3 lvls ranger the rest cleric, just some person and their dogs come to do healing

Chromatic Orb is great. 90-foot range, 3d8 base damage per spell slot level, with 1d8 per slot after 1st, and the caster chooses what type of damage it causes. Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, or Thunder. Awesome versatile spell for creatures that have resistances to specific damage types. Sure it's a ranged spell attack, but most AC's aren't insurmountable.

Right now, I'm actually playing a bladesinger elf wizard, she's still really early in, but she can be obscenely tanky (with no armor, Bladesong + Mage armor alone brings my AC to 18, add shield and for the remainder of the round it skyrockets to a whole 23 at just level 2). I'm considering whether or not to Multiclass into an eldric knight or some other form of magical melee type to further bolster her repetoire of abilities, which on their own are actually quite strong.

I was always weary of playing a Spellcaster. Stuff like Wizard and Cleric where you pick your spells each day felt like a long time to decide what to do. The first Spellcaster I ACTUALLY played was a College of Glamor Bard. The trouble I found was everything (in the campaign we were doing) seemed to be uneffected by Charm based things. So even my utility spells like Suggestion or Hypnotic Pattern felt like they didn't do anything. I like the Spellcasters that either give proficiency with armor (Bard, Warlock, Cleric, WITHOUT dipping into Fighter), or ones that give you "armor" (Draconic Sorcerer for example). I also like the ability to still do things if I don't have spell slots to do anything. So as a Bard, I can give Inspiration, I can use my Bonus Action to try and move the party around (though most of them didn't, since they were either in the thick of things or if they ran up as their Reaction, they couldn't hit the enemy if they went to leave) and give them some health to keep fighting. But I could also get in with weapons or Crossbows. Sure I had Vicious Mockery, but the low damage and the chance of giving disadvantage on one attack felt pretty bad. I'll say, that there WERE times I wish i could have swapped spells out, or "tried" them and went "Nah, I'm not getting my mileage out of this", and I feel thats where the Cleric, Wizard and Druid have an advantage. Try something out and if it doesn't work or is bad for the campaign, just Long Rest and Swap. In a future campaign, I am considering going into a Cleric or a Sorcerer. I REALLY like being the face of the party (as an example of the Bard). I have some great ideas for some spellcasters, but it is hard to decide what is better for me and my playstyle

Well, here's the way I look at it. The clerics and the druids are the only 2 classes in the game that start off at level 1 knowing every spell in their spell list. they don't have to pick certain spells to learn when they level up, they just know all of them. The problem is, in 5e (mainly because the chaos cleric hasn't been ported yet) the clerics have a very limited spell list. The wizard, on the other hand, does not automatically know every spell in his list, but he does have the ability to learn every spell in his list (and in previous editions he had the ability to learn every spell period. whether it was in the wizard spell list or not.). in addition to being able to learn every spell, the wizards spell list is the largest and most versatile in the game. so, until the chaos cleric gets ported to 5e the wizard seems like the best caster class in the game.

The character I'm running right is a LE Tiefling paladin2/Necromancer. He is beyond tanky and hits like a truck and has minions to provide shielding or become an hp snack (vampiric touch).

2 levels in Divination Wizard + anything = awesomeness! The portent ability is, in my opinion, the best ability a spellcaster can have, and arguably the best ability in the game for any class.

I usually play either sorcerer or Bard type casters. I find that bloodline powers and race optimizations are fun. And the Bard class is just fun to play.

I’ve just started playing with my friends and I DMd for the first 6 months so they got to level 5 where now we have switched campaigns to give me time to create a crazy story. So this is my first spell caster (wizard) and I chose to be a gnome tinker as well I want to maximize my strength while keeping to a gnomish character. What spells/cantrips do you all feel are the best for this?

One thought on diversity of damage types, Chromatic Orb... It is great for needing a little acid for that pesky troll guard and then a little fire for his Young Black Dragon master in the next room. I wish it did celestial and necrotic damage also, but the damage at level 1 makes up for this frustration.

Is War Caster still better then Resilient(Con) for a wizard if they are not a fighter multi-class?

for me I play my spell casters with a lo of options and typically enjoy the less damaging spells making playing an arcane trickster one of my favorite things to do seriously you would not know how much I get out of the minor illusion cantrip alone heck I play high elves when ever possible just to pick up an extra cantrip

If you're playing a cleric, I have found that I am most effective doing multiple different things at once. As in- concentrating on a spell, using a bonus action to heal or do damage, using an action that is either an effective spell or a weapon attack if I'm budgeting my resources, and with tempest cleric you have an amazing reaction. If I'm not saving resources I will always be doing all 4. Also, guidance and the healers kit makes sure my party feels the "support" while I can have fun controlling the encounters with spellslots. I have found that I am effectively squaring off against the DM in most encounters.

Personally my favorite option when it comes to blowing people up with fireball is a light cleric. It's just the coolest cleric domain out there in my opinion. Sure I've played Tempest and even death domain more,but light domain is just the ultimate Deus Vult character imo,especially if you start out with a level or two in paladin so you get all weapons and armor. That way you can bash undead creatures with flails,hammers or mauls and at the same time wreak havoc on the battlefield by summoning the wrath of your deity in form of Flaming sphere,fireball,burning hands,wall of fire, flame strike and all the other cleric aoe spells while at the same time also being a very capable healer and if you put 5 levels into paladin you're also really good at fighting in melee. Something like a 5paladin/5 light cleric for example is an excellent split for a level 10 character in my experience anyway. Personally that character ended up being 5 paladin/15 light cleric and oh boy did I have fun all the way getting there. Now my DM does not want to bother with the tenets of paladin oaths and just lets us pick whatever you want as a tool set if you think that the abilities would fit the character even if the tenets wouldn't so I went with redemption paladin just so I could use my channel divinity to punish any hard hitting monster for attacking my allies by shooting a beam of righteous fire at them.

divine soul sorcerer. have animate dead (better with 2) and cast dragons breath on them, after setting up spirit weapon, you get 3 spell effects a turn with your action still free to heal of fire ball without infringing on the actions of your allies

is a dragon born able to use its breath weapon every turn? or am i reading that wrong? i went dragon blood sorcerer dragon born.

Can someone enlighten me why it would be good to Go for eldritch Knight / wizard multiclass instead of just remaining a lvl 2 fighter / wizard multiclass?

I'm running a Warlock/Sorcerer combo (Hexblade/Shadow) currently (inspired by Nerdarchy's all of the cantrips build), and since he has a Staff of Swarming insects and a library of good controlling cantrips, he never runs out of steam. Not to mention, every time we stop for a short rest, I convert my Warlock spells into sorcery points and then extra spell slots. Because of this, I'm either breaking even or coming out ahead on spell slots after each short rest. Edit: However, I think the Celestial pact Warlock Tiefling I'm going to be starting up this weekend is soon going to become my favorite caster. He'll be going Pact of the Chain to summon a Celestial imp so he can Cure Wounds anywhere on the battlefield and use his Healing Light at maximum on himself if he gets into trouble. :)

Vengeance paladin 6 Zeal cleric 14 Drop two max power fireballs then smite the survivors!

So, I have to share the game I was running last night and the coolest thing for the night. My party was eight player's would have been ten but two couldn't make it. One was a friend that came to town for a couple of weeks and he made up a war forged beast master ranger. All player are 11 level, and I had them face off against a beholder and 10 tanurukks, you know cause it's fun to almost TPK the party. The ranger with his companion animal, a flying snake, charged the beholder. He shoots, almost point blank with a hand crossbow, his snake bites, nice hits but I have the beholder bite and for fun because it hits have opposed strength checks for grapple and the be holder latches on to the rangers crossbow hand and then flys up, for two round, at double move, now 80 ft in the air. On the ranger next turn he Casta summon animals and 8 normal flying snakes come in to help. The beholder let's go dropping him 80 ft. Ouch. Then with a legendary action the polymorph eye stalk turns one of the flying snakes into a t-rex, dropping it onto the ranger, beholder cancels the spell after it it's changing back into a flying snake. When the battle was done the ranger only had 1 hp left, and a really cool story to go with it.

I'm going Arcana Domain Cleric + 1 lvl Fighter, with Magic Initiate Wiz (mage hand, minor illusion, find familiar), and Ritual Caster Wiz. Playing as a Heavy Armor Booming Blade/Spiritual Weapon/Spirit Guardians as my primary dmg sources. My cantrips get wisdom mods bonus dmg at lvl 8, and I get free wizard spells all the way through, and at lvl 17 I get to pick up a 6th,7th,8th, and 9th level wizard spell. It's a juggernaut of a build with loads of utility, great damage, and it's fun to play. I'm playing as Varient Human, and using my Bat familiar to get 60ft Blind Sight to give me advantage in Magical Darkness and in heavily obscured areas like fog cloud, as well as just to be able to see in the dark. EDIT: This is for a Ravenloft campaign and the DM is awarding bonus feats which makes this a lot more feasible.

I split the difference and went Aasimar Divine Soul.

Just to try something different from Synaptic Static & Animate Objects I took Telekinesis. That's a. Nice spell, particularly for a Sorcerer. 10 min duration, you can grab someone lift them 30' & let them go, over and over. Or just throw them into another enemy. Move 1000lb items. You definitely will get your milage out of this one.

As a forge cleric at 6th level with magic initiate I have an AC of 29. I'm not getting hit a lot.

I went with war cleric 14 levels and 3 fighter levels Aldrich knightmy a.c. is 30 as a reaction and I have warcaster feat.

IF UA builds are valid then what about Arcane Cleric 1, Theurgist Wizard x? Character will have Arcana Skill, 2 Wiz cantrips (get utility ones) Detect magic and Magic missles as always prepped spells. Theurgy will get you lvls in Cleric Spells with selected domain spells taking priority... Overall Med Armor, Shield and Simple weapon proficient, casts spells cleric and arcane using INT as spell modifer. Have healing word prepped as an oh crap button and control/support or blast away as theurgy wizard. Action economy wise have Spritial weapon (early access if life cleric domain for theurgy) for bonus action, action is any spell if hasted then use equipped wand (if your DM allows) otherwise cast dragon's Breath and have your familiar use a breath atk and run away

I need some help with a build. I want to play a total pacifist Bard. My base story was to be a Minotaur who left his warband for a group of jovial gnomes who taught him music and peace. I want to be useful to my party, but avoid attacking at all costs. Considered dipping into ranger for a beast companion to essentially be a Disney princess. :D Suggestions?

4:10 If you're a cleric who takes firebolt with your magic initiate feat, you don't get to use wisdom as your spell ability mod when casting it, do you? How effective is it really then? Your cha/int is likely lower than your wis so you might be more likely to land your sacred flame

I would say a Cleric is better due to abilities. A Wizard can do some tremendous things...but they can't heal. Kind of important if you are a squishy type. A Cleric can really wreck things and heal up, especially if you play it to higher level.

I'm very much a fan of the wizard and have played one more times than any other class. The fifth edition cleric is very powerful and looks fun, but I prefer Circle of the Land druid.

As a Dm, I am using more clerics as a bad guy than a wizard. Why? Clerics are like armored casters with really good spells as told in the video and you can choose they target unlike arcane casters, they also have so many fanatics like some much trouble. Sometimes I am using a bard because they can really annoy the players that really fun to watch.

I want to see the ultimate utility caster for dungeon delving and puzzle mazes 12th level max. Maybe skill monkey rogue dip. Never play over 14th level characters.
