Our Ricky can sail very close to the edge, but there's no denying his truth is many peoples on the sly! He's erudite, an animal lover/campaigner, and he's disrespectful enough to make folk sit up and take notice... And once they've got over the initial sleight to their delicate sensibilities, they usually end up agreeing! Making people think is his thing. And he does it well. Thanks for this, Rob!

My brother is 3 yrs older than me when he was born my dad gave in to both sides of the family and had him Christened to keep the peace. But when i was born they tried to do the same thing with me but my dad put his foot down and told them 'no i will not'. He said when my daughter is old enough she can decide for herself what she wants to believe or not to believe in it would be her choice. I think my dad was very brave to do that and forward thinking, i was born in 1971. I am not religious but i am not an athiest, i just do not have a religion. I am a carer and i have looked after many people from different cultures and fairhs. I listen when they talk to me about their religion. They are not forcing it on me i find it facinating. There is so many different faiths in the world and people should not be judged on their faith and what they want to believe in. I believe in ghosts i have seen and felt things but others will not and that is fine. When i die, whenever that will be, i will find out for myself.

Ricky Gervais, Tim Minchin, Hitchens, George Carlin, Dan Dennett, to lesser degrees Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins - all played a part in my deconversion. I’m an agnostic atheist, but have no qualms with the faithful as long as their faith doesn’t intrude on the freedoms and happiness of others.
@ramudon2428
@ramudon2428 Жыл бұрын
Well it's pretty rare for a faith not to intrude on the freedoms and happiness of others. Like when religions are tax exempt, or a mother's belief causes her child to ignore reasonable information for longer than it could, or just cultural norms like you have to spend absurd money on flowers to decorate a casket because "that's just what you do" instead of just chucking people in the recycling. I suppose it depends what you consider intruding on the freedoms and happiness of others.
@NickBollingerMusic
@NickBollingerMusic Жыл бұрын
@@ramudon2428I agree with you wholeheartedly. It just feels hypocritical of me to proselytize when that’s among my criticisms of the faithful. But I do advocate for pushing back on its symptoms. I personally agree with Hitchens and Stephen Fry that religion is not a force for good in the world. But on a personal level, I have a hard time working to take someone’s source of comfort from them. It probably makes me a hypocrite, or at least means I don’t practice what I preach. I would have to admit to that.
@ramudon2428
@ramudon2428 Жыл бұрын
@@NickBollingerMusic I totally get why you'd harp on about your religion and aggressively recruit if you genuinely think everyone who doesn't believe in what you believe in is going to actual hell. I mean, if you don't you certainly aren't being a very good person. So I don't blame the headhunting activities, myself. In fact, I strangely respect it more than the wishy washy cherry picking variants that just ignores all the troubling stuff and "kinda sorta believes" half heartedly. That sort of socially adaptive tendency to just discard the horrific parts of religions is what keeps the pulse beating, I suspect.
@NickBollingerMusic
@NickBollingerMusic Жыл бұрын
@@ramudon2428 interesting take! And I see your rationale here too as far as preaching being strangely respectful. That too, to me, goes back to that hypocrisy of the religion itself - Jesus advises people to practice their faith in private. But it’s possible he was more advising against praying in a “showing off” kind of way, rather than what you’re saying, which is to “save” people. The cherry picking is infuriating. Particularly when the assertion is made that atheists can’t ground their morals in something but the religious can. Except… only grounded in the good parts, not the text’s advocacy for slavery, genocide, misogyny… you know the list. Good chat friend thanks for engaging.

I mean, i once watched a comedian do a joke about grandparents, and my grandfather died the month before. I didn't laugh, i just got a bit sad thinking about my grandfather... and that's where it ended. I just thought about my grandfather for a few minutes, composed myself, and by then the jokes were about something else and i laughed again. I didn't write an angry email, i didn't make a facebook post saying "how dare this comedian joke about grandparents when there's always someone somewhere who lost a grandparent" none of that! I just worked through my own shit and let the world work through theirs because that's shared freedom. i do not take away from others what i do not want others to take from me, be it a desire to grieve a loved one or a desire to make a joke.

I've been to his stand up gigs twice (once just last month in Dublin!)and he was BRUTAL - no subject is off limits with him - F**king Hilarious! He point blank refuses to 'dilute' his comedy - why should he? If it's funny and makes you laugh, then that is what comedy is about or it's pointless. Years ago over here in Britain we used to have a show called Points Of View. Usually on on Sunday either before or after another prog called Songs of Praise with people singing hymns from various churches... On BBC1. Great scheduling! Hah! Some of the things people wrote in to complain about were ridiculous! And they were just as vociferous, angry, miserable, unfounded and cancelling (even if the knew what they were cancelling or not) as social media can be right now! So people have always found a way to complain, it's simply easier now. What Ricky does is challenge. And people don't like their beliefs challenged on the whole. Not me like, I love a challenge!

I once heard Ricky say, in one of these interviews, that everyone is in fact an agnostic. You may have the greatest faith in a god or whatever, or you may have the most antagonistic attitude toward any faith, but at the end of the day NO ONE actually knows what the fact is. NONE of us actually know, so that makes everyone an agnostic - which is actually similar to what he just said about the three doors. Two of the doors are about beliefs, the third door is about a fact, different categorys

I find Ricky Gervais utterly hilarious and deeply profound. He's simply a brilliant man. I share his views on the universe, so I have no ideology to defend and no need to feel offended. About this propensity for taking offense: It's always seemed to me that if people are truly secure in their own beliefs/POV, they won't feel so threatened by someone not sharing their stance. IMO, the more offended the person, the more uncertain in their own belief system they are.

I think this a great example of an equivocation fallacy. Ricky changes the definition of a theist throughout the premises of his argument. It went from one who believes in a deity or deities to one who does not believe in deities. This is so he can create a false equivalency between atheism and theism. However, a theist may not believe in certain deities but by definition they believe in one or more. There is also an implication within his argument that the difference between theism and atheism is insignificant enough to be negligible. This is based on quantitative comparison of deities one believes in. However, in certain contexts a difference even in a small quantity can be significant. For example a person who is unemployed would not say they are in the same circumstance as their employed friend because they only have one more job than they do.

If we're being honest, nobody knows "what happens" when we die, period. Having said that, I believe that we were All dead for the whole time before we're born, and it didn't seem to bother me in the least... 😕🤷 I believe that death will be nothing to us. When we exist, death is not, and when death exists, we are not. I believe that all sensations and consciousness ends with death, and therefore in death, there is neither pain nor pleasure. I think that people's fear of death arises from the belief that in death, there is awareness... As for the existence of a God(s). I'm a Truth seeker. My atheism is but a side effect, through such endeavor... I wish more people would try and understand that one can't just pick and choose one's beliefs. One is either Convenienced by the amount of supporting Evidence/Reason, in support of it's claims, or one isn't, Period. And if you think that I'm wrong, I challenge you to, "choose to believe" that you can fly, and get up on the roof of your house and take that leap of faith off, much like you do for your "God." 😁👍 Having said that, I wish more people would try and understand that our beliefs actually Do matter, because they inform our actions. If one holds irrational beliefs, it can and will result in irrational behavior, like believing that you could fly and jumping off of the roof of your house lol.. I can no more believe that a flying monkey lives in my ass, than i can agod exists. But would be happy to believe in both, if there were Any rational, extraordinary, supporting Evidence/Reason we're to be shown to be true...

Here's my take: I've tried to sum it up in as few words as possible, a person born deafblind would still know the theory of gravity if they dropped a brick and it hit their toes because they wouldn't do it twice, but they'd never even comprehend a "God" in their lifetime if left alone and never taught any means of being indoctrinated such as braille. If they did have a schizophrenic discourse no religious person worldwide could be offended because it wouldn't be the same God. I also suspect they'd be inconceivably more appreciative of amazing foods that science brought them and they would thank the person who fed it to them not the sky. In a nutshell, to that person, who is unaware of a universe, unaware of almost all concepts besides physical touch, a person SO co-dependent, whoever holds food and water becomes a God. Now, the question becomes, "why does believing in a God make a difference to me, to you and what does that God do for you if you aren't doing it yourself?" I myself have arrived at "whether or not I believed in God wouldn't make a difference to my life, but my death." I've also realised that God doesn't do anything for me, I do it. Whether or not you believe does nothing, whether or not I believe holds me morally accountable beyond expectation. If I'm being attacked I'm still not to murder? Hell. Lose lose. After that, How the universe was created can be left at "I don't know" and I can still be a decent person within reason, without having to face Hell.

Everyone has the right to be offended. That doesn’t mean anyone else has to care one jot. Everyone has the right to think and feel whatever they want - it is /actions/ and if they impact others that matters. Now - it is also true that every right also carries with it a responsibility to exercise that right in a positive way. As Ren says in Money Game pt 1 “when did freedom become a reason to hate?” So anyone with a platform with people listening to them and who have influence as a result, has a social duty to use that platform responsibly. The danger (? Risk?) that a comedian like Ricky faces is that not everyone will get the irony. Some people could hear him say something and feel emboldened to act in hateful ways to others, because hearing someone with a platform justify their hatred, makes them feel their opinion/beliefs are validated and supported by someone they admire. Now - no one can be responsible for the actions of others either. It remains the responsibility of the person committing heinous acts, not a comedian who happened to make a joke about a minority that ‘encouraged’ someone to go out and attack, even kill people - but comics also shouldn’t deny that their platform can influence people and not act irresponsibly. Ricky, sometimes walks the line with extreme skill - and an intelligent audience member will understand he’s not supporting the heinous acts against people, but it is apparent that there are people who listen to his material and it is the hatred and bigotry they believe is being aired, that appeals to them and they enjoy hearing someone say out loud the things they feel. And that does run the risk of making the world a worse place - so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask particularly high profile, professional comics (but also any other artists), to consider how their performance/content/art might impact the world, and sometimes, self censorship could be a ‘good thing’. There’s a Month Python sketch about a joke that is so funny, it makes people laugh themselves to death. If a comic realised they had written such a joke, would it be responsible to go out on stage and tell the joke? It’s funny, it’s so incredibly funny - but it has consequences too…just because some things are funny, it doesn’t mean saying them is the responsible thing to do. Some comics (and again, other artists) flip that and say, it’s unreasonable to constrain creativity - that an artist needs to feel free to create and not second guessing themselves all the time. I get that - it can be hard enough to be creative in the first place that feeling the weight of responsibility while creating might destroy the magic you are trying to snatch from the universe and being into existence…but… There is almost always a gap in time between the creative moment, and sharing it with the world. It is in that moment when it should be reasonable to expect someone to pause and think “is this ok? Is the purpose of this art sufficient to justify whatever risks sharing it might carry?” So, films can have violence in them, songs can tell difficult stories, jokes might ‘punch down’ - but it is also reasonable to expect artists to have considered “is this justified?” If they believe it is - go for it. But also, if an audience experiences it and thinks differently, it’s entirely their right to say “you know what, we don’t trust you to make good decisions about your content you put out any more and we’re not going to listen to you any more.” And that’s why I have no sympathy with comedians/ artists who decry ‘cancel culture’. Everyone has the right to not listen to, not watch, not buy something/someone because they don’t like it/them. Complaining about cancel culture is saying “my right to speak demands that you pay attention to me. How dare you deny me the right to be heard!” No - you don’t have a right to be heard. You have a right to say something, but you do not have the right to demand anyone listens. You have to earn that. And if you choose to throw that away by turning people off you, own it. You did that. Anyhow - good choice to react to, and Ricky is a very smart guy I have a lot of time for and I think he actually gets this right 99% of the time (purely my opinion) - but he doesn’t seem to consider that not everyone is as smart or deliberate in what they do as he is. Some acts are just throwing shit at the wall and hoping people laugh - and if people decide the stink they cause is no longer worth putting up with, it is entirely reasonable that the audience starts to ignore that performing monkey. (And yes, that’s intended to be skirting close to offensive to make part of my point).

I love how Dawkins just smiles. Here's how it works - Answer this question: _Do you believe that a deity exists?_ If you said anything other than "Yes." then you are an atheist. That's it.

If you live in a society that truly has free speech, at some point you're going to be "offended." I put that in quotes because nothing anyone says or does can automatically "offend" anyone else. to be offended, or not, is a personal choice made on a case by case basis.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Tom Traubert's Blues (4 Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom Waits (Also known as "Waltzing Matilda"). His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! He's a well-regarded & respected songwriter from within the "Rock" genre from the 70's & 80's. I'd LOVE to hear your take on his signature song. Link Here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nr1iqdyq2d6nd4E.html

The reason for a theists disbelief is different from an atheists. The reason a theist does not believe in certain deities is because they see evidence for the existence of the deity or deities they do believe in and the truth of their words. Conversely, an atheist does not believe in any deities because he/she does not see evidence for their existence.

I try to avoid attacking any particular religious belief. Not simply to be polite, but because attacks on irrational beliefs strengthen those beliefs. It's a very human reaction to being told you're wrong. Also, the most harmful believers are the ones who think their religion is under attack. I don't want my disbelief to fuel someone's violence. So I am careful to frame denial of any religion as denial of every religion. I don't believe in yours the same way I don't believe any of the others. From the outside, every religion is obviously false. Nobody of sound mind joins a religion. Children and people in pain - these are who join. That's not to say that religious people are insane; just that you can trace the origin of their belief to a period of vulnerability. All of the amazing experiences that cement your belief - if you had been raised in a different culture, you would have a different description for each experience that would cement a different belief. It's the same experience, but your religion tells you what to call it or how to think about it. That said, I still find some residual bitterness about the lies I was taught, and I find myself attacking people who espouse those lies. I'm only human. But I try to be a better human.

The funny thing about "something" bigger... might be just a civilisation what is a few 1000's years more advanced than us... like the old saying imagine a person from 3000 years ago meeting you now with a cellphone, its magic for them, normal for us.

What he's saying , is that agnosticism (not knowing) is not in the same category as atheism (not believing in god/s) and theism (believing in god/s). Agnosticism is not some midway point on the scale between theism and atheism. It's not on the scale at all. It's a different topic. Theism and atheism are to do with belief. Agnosticism is to do with knowledge claims. They are not mutually exclusive. Most Western atheists, for instance, are agnostic atheists. They don't claim to know absolutely but due to lack of evince for the existence of gods and evidence against the existence of particular gods, they don't believe. Most theists are gnostic theists, in that they claim to know, for certain, that god/s is/exist. Saying you don't know, for certain, is the logical position, as virtually nothing, outside of pure mathematics, is disprovable absolutely. If you hold that position you're agnostic. However, it still hasn't addressed your belief. You either believe something, or you don't. It's probability, if we think something is improbable we tend not to believe. If we believe something is probable we tend to believe. If you're agnostic, you still haven't answered what you believe. You may have weak or strong disbelief but you either believe in 'x' or you don't. "I don't know" is not about belief, it's about knowing or not knowing. It's not an answer to the question, 'do you believe in god/s?". If you say you don't know what you believe, you're effectively lying to yourself. What you're actually saying is 'I don't KNOW for certain. Everyone knows whether they belive in gods and/or goddesses or not. How certain or not that they are in that belief is a whole different question. :)

Totally agree with you. I believe there is something out there. An energy as we are made up of energy . When my Mum died she said " if I ever go to a medium shall we have a code word so you know they are real and it's me" I saw one and one of the first thing I asked him was that . When he told me the code word I was shocked , he told me things I had never told any one. He was amazing.
