Good to see a quick glimpse of Miltown Malbay (8.47 - 8.53) home of the Willie Clancy Traditional Music Festival. The bronze statue of him is located just before your clip begins.

Must say we enjoyed your adventures around Ireland, we have been living here in Ireland for about 40 years (originally from London/Newcastle) We had a camper for 10 years or so, it was a VW Calypso low profile, we can totally relate to your experiences and we thank you for bringing us along. Stay safe and hope the health keeps up Ken until you return to the UK.

Back to Ireland playlist... It's so beautiful. The drone shots on this one are particularly stunning... Some of these sites are ideal for the drone shots; the aerial view makes a site a whole different scene. Altho she had quite the lecture to read about King John's castle in this one, I would love to hear Carol go "off-script." She's so clever, & when someone has an inquisitive mind & a sharp wit, everyone wants to hear their impressions! 👍👏🍀

So well done - hopefully we will get back to Ireland in the near future. I love the drives through all the small towns and seeing all the people out and about. I saw an image on a Irish site today that helps to explain how I feel about my Irish connections. Let me try to explain it - a photo of a young fellow being asked to locate France on a map and he correctly points to it, then Brazil and he again correctly points to it and then he asked to locate Ireland and he touches his heart.

The Irish Sea is to be avoided in bad weather, a few years ago we returned for a funeral, the weather turned bad on the way over such that the ferry had to run up and down the coast for ten hours in the lee of the cliffs until the wind dropped sufficiently to safely enter Rosslare harbour. Not nice.

My dad & I were here the day before you, and it was so wet, windy & foggy, we almost didn't see anything. The fog finally lifted just barely enough to see the closest of the cliffs. The guard who had a nice chat with us said that it's very rare to find it on a day as nice as the one you had. Well done! We also enjoyed Lahinch. If you haven't been to Carna, we HIGHLY suggest it!!

Visited Ireland over 20 years ago, looking forward to going again. From Dublin across to Galway and then all the way round the coast anti clockwise back to Dublin. We stood on that ledge at the Cliffs of Moher back then, it looks like it has had a lot of development since we visited.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 3 жыл бұрын
You would have to climb over a very stout wall to get to that ledge now Steve. Cameras everywhere as well. I remember thinking anti clockwise would have been better for filming as we were often filming into the sun with the best light behind us.

@@LifeistooshortCK Health and safety got to it no doubt. You could step down on to it and .. ... in my case ...... crawl to the edge for a look over . The viewpoint or the new visitor centre wasn't there, just a small building as you walked up from the car park .... plus an old man sitting on a chair playing a fiddle 😁. Beautiful country, we did all the west coast peninsulas, must go back when it all calms down. Really enjoying your videos, happy travels.

We saw a sign about buskers and the long tradition of them being at the cliffs. A bit of fiddle music would have gone down well but I suppose the lack of visitors is not paying that well as there were none to be seen. 👍

Great video, I love how you don't rush around and try and cram too much in, you just enjoy the places you come across. I travelled the West of Ireland a few years back, it's a beautiful place but as you've discovered the weather is something else. I visit Ireland every year(I have family in Wexford)I was supposed to move over this year but guess what put pay to that? As you're heading to Wexford for the ferry I recommend a visit to historic Enniscorthy which has a very nice Norman castle and a fantastic Cathedral built by Pugin of Palace of Westminster Elizabeth Tower fame, there is also Vinegar Hill the sight of an historic battle in the 1798 uprising. Also on your way to the ferry you could take a slight detour to what is often voted one of Irelands best beaches Curracloe where the beach landing scene in Saving Private Ryan was filmed. I hope you do come back to Ireland and complete your very enjoyable series. I'd recommend June or July next time though.

@@LifeistooshortCK Curracloe is where we have a second home and spend a lot of time so if you are back there and I am installed we could meet up if it suits. I think a scene from Brooklyn was also filmed on Curracloe beach. Ballinesker beach (the name for the section of beach where the Saving Private Ryan opening scenes were filmed) is very like a minature version of Omaha beach (from memory, hope I got the right one!). There is a landing craft used in the filming in the grounds of a local business nearby

I'm enjoying your travels almost as much as you are! The Cliffs of Moher have changed a lot since we visited there twenty years ago. I'm not sure the change has been for the better, but I will withhold final judgment until I see it firsthand. Sorry you weren't feeling well at King John's Castle. It is fascinating. If you walk around the castle to the river, there is a beautiful park. A friend of ours that lives near Limerick has a schoolmate that grew up on the castle grounds. Many years ago, there was low cost housing inside the castle in the open area.

Went to the Cliffs of Moher about 2 years ago. Sadly the day was so misty and it was raining. Could not see for more than about 2 to 300 metres ahead while driving. So obviously never bothered to stop. I live in Southern Ireland, in County Cork. The weather is so much nicer than the east side of Ireland. When we arrived home that day the sun was shining.

We were also very pleased that you mentioned about your initial anxieties about where to park and even though we haven't tried it yet and our van isn't finished, Yvonne and I were just discussing this the other day of how we felt a little bit anxious, we are so glad to hear that this will be an initial passing phase. Once again, really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one.

I am good thanks and just felt little sick so decided to sit in the van and edit. I soon felt better. I think most people are anxious the first few nights and for a while you may worry about finding a parking space but that has certainly gone for us. I now know that I can park it most places you can park a car and if we go into stealth mode very few people have a clue you are there. Good luck with your first trip, you don’t need to go far. We tested stealth mode overnight in a town centre car park where we live and that gave us confidence. 👍

Got to admit all of those empty "cottage's" your were mentioning would make for a cool show of some sort where it would be about someone or some company really using the what remains of some of those locations and rebuilding them for some sort of use such as an Air B&B or something... also been watching several of your earlier content and have to admit I enjoy your old camper.. but can see how your van really gives you freedom that you didn't have before.

Huge difference in comfort between the caravan and the camper but nowhere near the freedom to see things. With a caravan you are always going back and forth along the same roads visiting places. With the van you just go from attraction to attraction and camp. 👍

Another video triumph Ken and Carol. You pronounced Lahinch perfectly and were very close with Moher as well (Carol was spot on). The deserted cottage you mention shows a feature almost unique to that part of Ireland and you would have noticed far more of it had it been pointed out at the time. The roof, rather than being thatched was made from "Liscannor" flagstone. It was and is abundant in the area and features everywhere (including the floors in O'Brien's tower and also a huge piece creating the roof of the reception/visitor centre at 2.08 in the video). Lahinch is similar to some other beaches on the west coast of Ireland in that in the last decade (maybe two) the Australians have discovered that the waves are among the best in the world for surfing. It's to do with the gradient of the shelf and the weather systems forcing the water towards it (or something like that). Seemingly wave quality is far more important than sunny weather so the likes of Bondi beach have been forsaken for Irish beaches by many Australians (many of whom have set up surf schools/businesses). You seem to be a great man for your apps Ken - fair play to you for even using one to take a best shot at a calm return trip. One final comment, Carol does an excellent fried egg! How on earth do you manage to turn them and still not break them Carol - EVERY TIME!?
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 3 жыл бұрын
JohninRosc I do sometimes break the yolks! The trick is to get the frying pan hot enough before you put the eggs in so that the underside cooks quickly and the whites solidify. If you have a good non stick pan they should then be easy to move around and flip over. Thanks for your interesting and informative comment, best wishes from Carol 😀

When you left Kilrush, it's a shame you didn't go to Loop Head & the Bridges of Ross, you could have parked there easily without disturbance, many others do. O Brien is pronounced O Brian. no difference. Breen = Breen. Thomand = Toe Mand Some say Lehinch others Lahinch, big debate.. Sorry to hear of your ill health, come back anytime (Ennis Native) Clarecastle Wiki: Clarecastle (An Clár or Irish: Droichead an Chláir, ( pronounced Dre Hid On Claw-ir) meaning "Bridge of the Plateau") is a village just south of Ennis in County Clare, Ireland. From 2008 to 2016 the village saw a significant population increase due to its proximity to Ennis, Shannon, and Limerick. The town is named after the Clare Castle,[1] which stands on an island in the narrowest navigable part of the River Fergus. The Irish Clár, meaning a wooden board, is often used for a bridge. The name probably originated as Clár adar da choradh, which means "the bridge between two weirs". Another explanation of the name is that the de Clare family gave the castle its name, since they had acquired land in Kilkenny and Thomond that included the castle. In 1590 County Clare was named after the castle, which is in a strategic location. Clarecastle was once a port for boats, used to deliver items into the town of Ennis that could not navigate the river Fergus. The Quay of Clarecastle was a busy port during its time.[1] Today it is used for fishing and recreation.

Carol pronounced Moher on the last attempt "Moer" without the "H". Donegal now has the highest number of Covid cases and at the start it was one of the lowest. You are suffering from "nomitransbiosis", the using of names other than what that person is called. Oh no! the dreaded kissing of the Blarney Stone, I hate that kind of old Irish stuff. @@LifeistooshortCK hi Ken/Carol, you had been doing well with the pronunciations up to this!! The pronunciation you used is closer to the gaelic version of the name, spelt O'Briain. At this stage you are in O'Brien country so there are lots of O'Brien references. Mostly Irish people dont pronounce (the cliffs of) Moher as two syllables, its generally pronounced "More" with the slightest hint only of two syllables. "H" was not a letter in the Irish language but was incorporated during the anglicisation of Irish place names to reflect how the word sounded to the English-speaking ear. So you were in Gortglas during this video. Breaking that into the two gaelic constituent words would translate it as "green field". Dublin is an anglicisation of Dubh linn which translates as black pool; the pool that it is reputedly named after can be viewed on a tour of Dublin Castle in the centre of the city.
