Closing Down and Restarting a Reef Tank In One Day

In this video, I'm going to share with you a tank refurbishment. The client had fallen out of love with their aquarium. Corals didn't look healthy and parameters were out of whack, not only that Palythoa had all but taken over the aquarium. We decided to do a full overhaul of the tank get it looking beautiful again.

Aaron how is this tank now? I need to do this with mine. But I am terrified I got all new liferock rock new sand. And a big bottle of fritz turbostart and microbacter7 should I just do it?

Is this possible to do without the natural sea water? I have a mixed reef, sps frags so I don't want to kill everything, and use some bottled bacteria?

I have a HOB protein skimmer , iam using a gfo reactor and let the water from it drain in to my refuguim its hanging on, i wanted to add a bio pellet reactor but everyone says it needs to empty in to my protein skimmer , i reall dont have way to that i can have it drain right next to the input of the pump , but its still in my main tank , so where is it safe to empty the out end of the REACTOR in to , can i just drain in to my refuguim also , or can i dump staight in to tank next to pump pick up , or should i not add a bio pellet reactor if i dont have a sump or can i run the bio pellets in to the gfo REACTOR, one in to another , if so which is the best order to put em in , Bio pellets first then GFO then out in to tank or what ? Can some one help please

Top work lads. Did you re-acclimate the inhabitants to the new NSW water chemistry or does it not really matter? This has always bothered me when doing really big water changes. I'm so careful drip acclimating when I bring livestock home so as to not stress it out but I will do a 75-80% water change and they don't seem to care.

Hey Aaron, I’m looking into restarting my reef tank. Monti eating nudis and algae plagued my tank. So I’m thinking about taking all the coral out and place them in another tank and all the fish in my qt tank for awhile. Can I bleach and clean the tank and put some cycled rock back add the necessary bacteria back and make sure the tank is stable and add my some of my corals back. Of course I will be re-dipping all my Montis and corals. Question is, Can I do this without a major loss to coral?

Did you do do it? I have a tank that's not doing the greatest and I wanna do a total tear down and restart. I just dont have a place for my corals or fish atm. I gotta think this through. Did you lose anything??

reefer madness I finally in the process. But I ended up battling and now I have a foothold on the tank being stable and nice. But I have all the new rock from a fellow reefer covered in coraline sitting in a bin with saltwater and heater and other rock acid bath and bleached just sitting. I’m slowly moving my coral over in a little tank and I have a 75 gallon and a bin for my fish. Just keep the lighting really for the coral. The fish don’t really need too much light. Feel free to reach out and I can help. You can do it. It’s not that hard.

Surely with all the dead uncured rock and thus no biological filtration, you are going to get a huge cycle even with colony. I would be really surprised if the corals and fish survive more than a few weeks. Don't mean to be negative but quick start is rarely long lived. Would be interested in an update a month or two down the line.

Sorry man but I will be surprised if those fish are still alive in a month and that tank will be covered in hair algae. I hate being negative, but man, so much wrong in this video. I know you poured in colony but those rocks didn't look cured. You should know there is no shortcuts in reefing. Show a follow up video in a month or two and if I'm wrong I will retract all my negative statements.

You are entitled to your opinion. This has been done multiple times before this video. Hair algae needs food to grow we aren't providing that. Understand your way of thinking as it's what has been drummed into hobbyists forever and a day. If you understand why something happens you can stop it before it does it's honestly that simple.
