Yes! I continue to go through each room every six months or so and still seem to find things to get rid of. I think that we remember that we haven't used it and it is time to get rid of it. In the past I have been able to get rid of a tub of Christmas items a year for the last few years. This year I am going to get rid of anything that I don't put out.

My advice for your sister is to stop with all the supplements. you don't need supplements unless you have a deficiency. normal healthy food should have all the nutrients your body needs. I have an iron deficiency so I take extra iron only. I think you should try to look at it that way and not be afraid to let go of habits like that. I used to take all kinds of supplements as well, so it's a lesson I learned I want to pass on.

Everyone is different. I'm on a regime of multiple supplements and I'm miserable without them. If she's stockpiling and not taking them, that's different. If she's just getting because she can, it might be time to review them. Also, the standard American diet is far from adequate when it comes to nutrition.

Registered dietetian here: if you eat a healthy, balanced diet you do not need supplements, only maybe in the winter seasons to give a little boost. Yes, if you have deficiency then you should take those but don't forget, you CAN overdose on vitamins, etc. Be mindful and consult with a GP if you are unsure.

I think she should put together a “use it up” basket for herself. Collect 15 items and try and finish them in a month. I did it with beauty/bathroom items and it was fantastic to have that focus goal.

I did this too. And instituted a no new products until old ones are used up. I think especially with beauty products /skin care we can easily fall into the trap of collecting rather than using.

I started with small bottles, jars, samples and freebies we tend to get a lot of. They were in random bins and drawers and once all together it was a huge amount. It felt great to have that amount to see at once and just try them out. Some I loved, mini surprises to try, and discovered ones that had gone bad along the way. It cleared a lot of random items that tend to get pushed to the side.

I see it on Carla’s face every time the garage is suggested…. “Oh ok we will toss that later when we do the garage a second time”. There’s a slight eyebrow raise and dash of hope across her face. She even said it out loud once to her sister. 😂. I think it’s totally fair to have a single location as an “on hold” spot for things you aren’t ready to let go, and then go through it again when you have a good ruthless decision energy day.

Good point. I also said do another pass on the garage. And set aside things in some way to give certain items a use- it-or-lose-it by 6 months. And set a timer on her phone. If she hasn't used it, bye bye?
@SIC647
@SIC647 8 ай бұрын
For advice she herself talked about doing a second round in the garage. That is wise, for everywhere: - First time you get rid of a lot of obvious things (trash, expired, never use) and you organise. - Second time you don't have to deal with (as much) mess and trash. Then you better have energy to make decisions about all the ok stuff: Which products/items are the best, and which ones don't you really care about? Do you use this thing enough to keep it? Do you use it at all? Are you realistically every going to? Do you really need this? Was this thing part of a fantasy self dream about what and who you could be, and it is time to let that go? One should declutter regularly. That is my best advice. It is not a one and done. If doing it along the way is too vague, then plan for once a month or once every half year.
@uptownflavor
@uptownflavor 8 ай бұрын
Yes. I try to do it twice a year. During the holidays and in the summer. When I was growing up we would spring clean and that was a good time to declutter or at least organize. My rule of thumb is do first pass then a few months later revisit and if I haven’t used it then it needs to go away. Usually to donate because someone else can love it. I had filling up the landfills.

The reality is she will be able to "see" her stuff much more clearly once the house is fully decluttered and they tackle the garage again. Odds are the house will take another pass or two to get it fully dialed in (though not as much time as the first pass) because it will become more evident what is used/enjoyed and what is not now that all the visual distractions are being removed. It's also part of the decompression process - when someone has lived in a home packed to the gills, it takes a while to mentally/physically adapt to a new normal, just as it does for people who lose a significant amount of weight. So, if they can make it through the entire house for the first pass before Christmas, then follow up with round 2 first quarter of 2024 with a deeper cut/refinement, it will be much easier to let go of half the stuff in the garage.

I think she needs to start asking herself how many calendar days it will take her to use up what she has. The amount of supplements that she has? Many of them will expire before she can even use them. That seems like a good opportunity to be ruthless and let a bunch of them go.

Your sister is doing so well and you are amazing Carla! Maybe if your sister puts a small sticker on every item after she uses them and then she after 3-6 or even 12 months she will be able to visually see which items weren't used or needed. Also for the items that went to the garage (that you were pretty sure would never be used) maybe put them in a brown paper box with the date marked and if she hasn't thought about them in 6-12 months, don't open the box (it will be too tempting to keep everything) just take the box to a charity shop.

My advice to your sister is to put all supplements in one area. Having some supplements here and some supplements elsewhere prevents you from understanding exactly how many you have and which may be expired. Getting too many duplicates of the same supplements just ensures that some will go to waste. Once they are in one place start calculating which will likely be used before they are expired. While they are still unopened and unexpired others could benefit from them or you'll just be disposing of them later.
@nancyhannon9728

She should have an honest discussion with her health provider about what if any supplements she needs. There are so many companies marketing crap. She needs to be better informed and educated. Also, I would suggest she and her family meet with a financial advisor, create a monthly budget, and stick to it. So much $$$$$ has been wasted with their impulse buying. I think your sister is very brave for even asking for help and it’s great you are giving her that start. It does seem like she’s not ready to do a thorough decluttering and that’s OK. I hope that when she watches this, she will see how much money was wasted in food and/or supplements that is expired and that will help her to limit her apocalyptic prepping. She could have gone on trips or paid some bills with that money. I think once a month she should go through her clothes, supplements or food and evaluate what needs to be kept. When you hoard so much stuff and are not willing to part with it, deep down that person feels organization is the problem, not excess and that there was a reason they bought that item and it was to use it. There are women’s homeless shelters that could use unexpired food, toiletries, etc. There are food banks that could use that unexpired food. During the pandemic, I decluttered my home- food, clothes, shoes, everything. I was at first overwhelmed so I would do most of the work on the weekends. It took me about a year to complete. I had paycheck stubs from 1995-2021! All gone and shredded. I got rid of 70% of my clothes and shoes. It took patience and talking to myself and even if something still has tags on it to let it go if it’s been a year and not worn. The women in the shelters in my area have greatly benefited. I’ve also given things to family members and friends.

But...I do feel that she should find more ways to let go of most of those supplements, as there are entirely too much for one person to take. Also, if she takes any medications, review those medications for any supplements she shouldn't take while taking those medications, as they can cause issues when combined. It took me 10 months to declutter 2 of my rooms! Mind you: I didn't do everything in one go. I had to take a lot of breaks over that period of time and during summer I didn't even touch any of the stuff at all! It was so overwhelming at times. I kind of worked in shifts 😅Decluttering is so much more than just clearing out space. The whole organisation and planning (where to bring stuff and than taking it to these places etc the cleaning and dusting and tidying... 😳) It's physically and emotionally draining. However: I got there in the end and both rooms are decluttered and spacey now and I love the results. I had made the goal to finish my project this year. That's what kept me motivated and going. And yes Carla: your sister should be more ruthless. But I guess that comes with practise 😊😊I think she has been doing really well so far though. You guys worked so hard✊🏻👍🏻you go girls❤🫶🏻🙋🏻‍♀️

I am technically still not done as I need to do another trip to the landfill to get rid of some stuff you can't throw away in the usual trash (turpentine, lacquers) but it's all at a level where everything has a home for now and there's plenty of space.

My advice would be what legacy does she want to leave behind for her family? When she is gone, someone will have to take care of what is left behind. Will the things she has add value to their lives or weigh them down like her clutter is doing to her? Also, how much value has she removed from her own life by taking ownership of the things she has? Each item owned is another thing to take care of, another thing to think about. If she wants to truely understand the extent of her issue, she can write down every item she owns. The longer she does it the more exhausted she gets, the more pointless it feels to have these items. Letting go may become easier at that point.

maybe one thing for your sister to try is to use storage spaces as a visual limit of what she can keep. so for supplements for example, if it doesn't fit in the drawer she can't keep it. love the work so far thanks for sharing with us the process :) she's doing great

Yes. The one in one out strategy. Just did that with my bathroom declutter. Empty bottles and jars and expired products cluttering up my countertop. Just reordered products that I will actually use. No multiples. Even if it’s on sale. I only do that with personal care items like toothpaste and cleaning products.

I know the prepper mentality. My husband and his family are just like that as well and I have to fight hard to keep clutter to a miniimum. One thought, that always comes to my mind is: how can you be prepared for anything, if you don't even know, what is actually in your house/appartement? Also: what do you actually like to use? No matter if it is make-up, supplements, clothes or whatever else, if the thought: I don't like that comes into your head, it's time to say goodbye. Mind you, you don't have to get rid of essentials of course, but the rest?
@AB-ol5uz
@AB-ol5uz 8 ай бұрын
But the prepper mentality is not the same as a hoarder mentality. Prepper mentality would be something like setting up a goal to have 1 year worth of food on hand, not 30 years worth; it is also about learning skills that allow you not to rely on convenience items (i.e. learning to can/preserve food, make your own bread, grow your own herbs/fruits/veggies, etc.). The challenge here is that she is willing to try new things/new tools, etc. - which is a great attribute - but she didn't get rid of/donate the items she didn't like/weren't useful or return them if they failed to deliver as marketed, etc. So the beneficial things got buried under the visual/physical weight of the unbeneficial. So, she needs to shift into consuming her inventory and replenishing it as needed to reduce waste.

I started decluttering because of you and im so happy. You two are so cute together. Where's Sampson? I must see him every video.😂😂 I'm a reformed supplement junkie. My advice to her would be to narrow it down to 6 she takes every day. I looked at the ones I reached for constantly due to deficiencies....out of 28 supplements, I only used 6 consistently. The others were expired or just taking up space so i threw them out. It was a pain to realize I wasted about $300.

I have been on a slow declutter for the past few years and take ideas and tips from all sources. The idea behind the Swedish death declutter has worked best for me, as when I decide to go through family treasures I keep what I like and then offer the items to my children next. I ask them to come look at the stuff, make their decision and take it there and then, if not it is donated. I also bought three plastic containers and sorted personal photos into them and gave the kids their own . Decluttering takes time , just as the stuff in the home didn't just appear overnight, baby steps, baby steps

Now we need to save money again anyway so we made the commitment of working through projects we already bought the materials for. We already see that stuff in general gets literally worked away and we already have more space in general. So for me its all about the commitment of ending projects i have started i realized. ❤ From Austria!

After downsizing to a smaller house my biggest advice to give your sister is to have things in only one place and keep like with like. All medications and supplements are in ONE place, anything paper such as bills, office supplies etc is in one desk, all craft things are in one cabinet. Something that helped me in my decluttering process was to stop things from coming into my home (purchases, subscriptions, free things, junk mail, donated items, and gifts from others). Also, everything needs its proper place and a limit on how much space that item can occupy. Once it's full, one in one out rule comes into play. Your sister is doing great! ❤

I give her lots of credit. She even has been doing some on her own before you visit. I think she needs to make sure that every new supplement that comes in an old one goes out. I am on the last week of decluttering with friends for the month of November. We have been getting rid of the number of items the day of the month is. It has been so freeing. Your sister demonstrates courage each and every time she makes a decision. It's a journey and whether it's 10 or 100 items out the door, it's progress. Keep being awesome ladies! A good lesson in timing planning. Smaller items always take longer to go through. Think about the # of items (aka decisions) rather than space. Without meaning to be rude in anyway, my best advice would be for your sister to cancel whatever deal she has with the supplement company/ies. I don't know if she gets paid for the reviews and if that might be a factor in wanting to continue (understandable), but if not, maybe just knock it on the head. It would be beneficial just in terms the space gained, but also, I don't see how anyone can give a good review of so many supplements without testing them in an extremely regimented, highly documented way - which sounds like way too much work! The only other advice/mindset is that I think of space as a luxury - it's what a lot of us don't have. Empty space is not a lack of anything, it's a bonus. Love to you and your sister - she's lovely x

You both are helping me help my friend declutter and organize her house, which was in a similar state to Sherry's, though packed even more. Your vids help remind me to do my best to keep things "light" and to laugh with my friend during the...overwhelming...process. Step-by-step, bit-by-bit, box-by-box, item-by-item...we do 6-8 hour sessions once a week. What's exciting is to see her expression and mood when she walks into a space that we've cleared. She's so happy! Yesterday, after about the fourth hour, she could walk into her laundry room and USE horizontal surfaces. She's kept the living and dining rooms beautifully. There's hope! Wish us luck, though, as there's far more work to be done. Thanks again, Carla and Sherry, for your tips and inspiration. PS: It's so much easier to see what "should" be tossed or donated in another person's home, isn't it? Our own stuff? It's a struggle!

Your sister mentioned it in reference to the garage and some people here have also already suggested it and I also think that doing a 2nd or even 3rd round in places like the kitchen, the office, and the garage might help your sister say goodbye to a lot more stuff. Especially since you're relocating a lot of things, there'll be duplicates of things you weren't maybe even aware of. I highly recommend Dana K. White’s container concept in this case. She has a book Decluttering at the Speed of Life, as well as a KZfaq channel, but the basic concept is this: the space you have is the space you have. Establish a container/shelf/cabinet as a boundary for each item, only keep your faves, and toss the rest.
