I was a snowflake when I was 13, and three days before opening night, I fell and got a pinched nerve in my lower back. I was too afraid to tell anyone that I was hurt, so I just continued with rehearsals and the shows. It was probably the most painful experience I’ve been through in my life so far.

@@lapaula_fj_ I never quite recovered. For the first few weeks, it was terribly painful and made it very difficult to walk. The pain lessened over the course of a few months until it was completely gone. But it’s been over four years now, and the pain still comes back for a few days every couple of months. It doesn’t hurt nearly as much as it did when I first got it though. And I really should have told someone, but I was absolutely terrified. Two weeks before opening night, I overheard my ballet teacher talking to someone about how one of the girls had broken their foot and couldn’t perform. My teacher was absolutely furious and said, “how could she injure herself so close to the show? This is such short notice to find her a replacement.” I was scared for how she and my other teachers would react, but I was also a little afraid that if I told them, they would take me out of the show. I had worked so hard for months, and it was really emotionally deteriorating for me. I didn’t want it all to be for nothing.

Waltz of the Snowflakes is one of my absolute favorites in the Nutcracker. The urgency, the joy, the magical ethereal display always makes me feel transported to the forest. The twirling of the dancers, the flitting to and fro in a rush like the flurrying of the first snowfall. A cascade of snow swirling into a dizzying array of white, the storm awakens and when it is done with its dance what is left is the glistening fresh snow in the quiet solitude of the night. Beautifully done! Wonderful performance.

He really had a way to understand music and make it paint you a picture. The magical snowstorm, snowflakes twirling and flying around, and the choir magical singing brings turns it to real fairy tale. I love how it starts with few snowflakes and music is very modest, but as time progresses it is a full blown snowstorm. Speed is rising, dance is turning complex and we can see snow personalized through dancers in all it's glory and aspects. It is plain and simple but then picks up to a chaos only to turn slow and calm again, as children appear. Falling snow is magical to them, since Christmas is time of magic.

The hardest corps piece in all of ballet. The choreo is FAST (and makes all other companies' Waltz of the Snowflakes look ... notably less active), and the snow is little pieces of paper and it does not stop. Toward the end it starts blowing in sideways so as to look like a blizzard. It's a miracle the dancers don't fall more often.
