I get this question a lot so here’s what I think about becoming a CNA before a nurse. I did it and found it beneficial but there are pros and cons to it.

You can totally tell when a nurse has been a CNA in the past. No offense but some nurses that have not been CNAs before it’s like they don’t have basic knowledge and/or how to do simple things.

I think being a CNA has helped me in nursing school in terms of having good bedside manner as well as time management skills. I know I’m going to have trouble switching gears when I’m a nurse because I’m so used to having to be independent for the most part with a high patient load.. I’m going to have to step back and realize the new role and take the time to learn nursing,

Fernanda Gonzalez yes. A lot of the work as a new nurse is learning how to talk to patients, families, other medical staff etc and you already have the experience. Also time management is huge!!! Nurses that have been CNAs are able to find a groove a lot faster I have noticed.

Depends on the person. You also may not know certain skills that you learn as a bottom.

Yes but it really depends on where you work. Most of my experience has been in nursing homes and home health as a cna.......but now that I am in the hospital .....I am learning so much more and you have to do things the right way as a cna. It was the best decision I made.

Yes! I knew that I wanted to be a nurse when I worked at a nursing (retirement) home. I literally was a newbie at EVERYTHING and really enjoyed it! I had moments of doubts, but the residents always reassured me that I was in the right field and making the rights steps towards my ultimate goal.

I'm so glad I watched this video. I have absolutely no healthcare experience. And I thought that if I went to our free CNA program at my school I would get more experience. I have two more pre-requisites to complete before I can apply for our RN program. I found that I wouldn't have the time to complete the CNA program because the classes are at night. But after watching this video, I feel confident that it isn't absolutely necessary for me to have registered for that program. Thank you so much!!

Thank you so much .. your so inspirational, Iam a CNA/GNA and I mainly work with people with dementia and Alzheimer’s in the state of MD. I look up to you so much , yet some people are in it for the money which also shows peoples attitudes as well . Yet my family have been in nursing homes , so I learned to have a heart .. take care of them like that’s your family and yes plz .. CNA’s transitioning to nurse video plz 💓💓💓💓 love your videos and you ! Keep pushing girl!!

LOVE YOUR VIDEO. I believe you should go for what you "want." If it is nursing, go for it. I don't believe in a "ladder" like progression into a profession. I believe that being a CNA can "help" with certain skills but making it a defacto requirement is unacceptable. The key to "understanding" is empathy and you will have the ability to connect with people within any profession. THANK YOU SO MUCH & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Girl.. imma be terrible! 😩😆I don’t know how many times I’ve told these tacky techs I’d fire them of I was a manager. Everybody knows I’m THAT tech 🥰❤️. I hate to see my nurses abused especially the ones scared to speak up to the ratchet techs. I check them quick! I know when I become a nurse, those lil raggedy heads will spin 🤣😩🤣🤷🏾‍♀️. I don’t play about my patients. I work in a hospital where it’s truly life or death. A lot of these techs be playing and it’s a shame. I totally feel you. ❤️

Najah Babe you will definitely get that experience as a CNA. If you really want to learn a lot and learn the right ways to do things as a CNA and not get into the bad habits.....work in the hospital.

So if the CNA's are not completing their work before the shift is over won't that reflect badly on you? And won't you be held responsible for the CNA work not being completed before the shift is over. How do you handle these situations?
@mianelson6850
@mianelson6850 5 жыл бұрын
Paula7379 there is no way to "complete" ur work when U work with human beings! Humans don't go by a schedule especially sick humans! U may have been told to give Mrs.Smith a shower by 8 o'clock but Mrs.Johnson keeps hitting the call light every 20 minutes Mr.Jones has CDIFF so he's going to the bathroom every 15 minutes & Mrs. Williams has passed away so now u have to go clean the body up! That's why it's 3 shifts 24/hour care because the work is never "done"!

I was not a CNA prior to becoming an LVN; however, I do feel being an LVN is important to *me* prior to becoming an RN. Either way, compassion & the right mindset goes a loooooong way. I literally treat people the way I'd treat my own loved ones. I'm to start in hospice in January (speaking that into existence) & I'm 100% sure that's where I'm supposed to be as my desire to offer support & care at that time is my calling. (My IG name: NaturalNeec).

I have concerns about being a CNA because I am a short person and I wouldn't be able to lift up a 200 pound person and i heard that nurses are not real team players.

I once’s worked with a CNA that’s a little person and she did well. She was a hospice CNA and would come do showers for patients on hospice and I’m not really sure how the experience was for her but she did a great job. As far as heavy patients there are machines that lift them. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy but you may be able to find a setting that fits you, like a pediatric home aide, or pediatric PCT

You’ve had CNAs that told you that they don’t have time to change the position of a patient?! Or to change a patient? Omg that person would get fired right away at the Facilities that I’ve worked at. Wow.
