Why All Eyes Are On Zimbabwe’s Lithium Industry

Zimbabwe has been mining lithium for 60 years and the government estimates that its Chinese-owned Bikita mine, which is located 300 km south of the capital Harare, has about 11 million metric tons of lithium resources.
In an effort to reclaim control of its mineral exports, Zimbabwe passed the Base Mineral Export Control Act in 2022, which banned the export of raw lithium. However, some Chinese-owned companies that are developing mines and processing plants in the country are exempt from this ban.
With the world going electric, African countries will play a critical role in the electric vehicle battery supply chain. In 2009, China overtook the U.S. as Africa’s largest trading partner and accounted for 70 percent of global EV battery production capacity leaving the U.S. behind.
CNBC explores Zimbabwe’s mining sector to find out why China has a stronghold on the country and why it matters to the U.S..

Western media seems unable to talk about Africa without mentioning China. I understand sometimes you have to mention China but it's almost impossible to find reporting done on Africa without China popping up once. Sometimes, it feels like Africa matters only because China has an edge over western countries.

You cannot talk about marketing strategy without talking about your competitors. US and Europe lost their grip on Africa by treating us as their colonies even after independence. China saw that and moved on us, not to help but to exploit. The sad truth is that Africans are not as patriotic especially the kingsidents, as long as they can line their pockets they will sell anything to anyone. You cannot ignore China's pesence here coz its doing more harm than good, investigative journalism will dig into that, which they should, so that people see what their employees that they vote for are doing.

@@auspiciousnkomo3071 Ofcourse, every country will look for it's own interest. That is obvious. African countries and leaders should choose partners who give them the best deal which leads to development of their country/people. China is no saint and they will look out for their own interest. Nonetheless, so far China does seem to have given the better deals. Thus, most African countries have started partnership with China. However, in western media African countries partnership with China is seen as a naive action by the Afrcian leaders. African countries want to work together with both west and China but western countries want African countries to avoid working with China.

If you do not have the capital and technology, you need foreign investors. Zimbabwe sure have rich people, but I do not think they have that huge capital. Too nationalistic policy is bad for the economy, esp. in a globalized world.

Western media for decades have been completely silent about African independence while their countries exploited Africa through military and covert means. Today, with Africa and China free trade based bilateral corporation at all time high and still increasing, leaving Western countries unable to join or participate effectively and get any sort of benefit out of it, Western media suddenly can't stop talking about African Independence. @Morrie's world Why feel sad and frustrating now when China plays a role in the lithium mine? Why it didn't matter at all when the western countries were dominating, exploiting and looting these mines? On the other hand, no one owes Zimbabwe a living. If Zimbabwe wants progress and improvement in life for its people it must offer to exchange and trade with other nations for what it needs and what others need from Zimbabwe. Isn't it fair? Or Zimbabwe prefers to continue to own the mines awaiting for the return of western colonizers to once again ransack it clean? Get the best deal you can. China struck deals with African countries not forcing them to forgo their rights. In comparison with other western powers in the past China now provides better terms and compensation for the minerals while also helping to build up infrastructure for Zimbabwe.

The Chinese run bikita minerals is a joke for the locals. My brother in law is working there as an engineer on industrial attachment and they don't even pay a cent or even offer transport, on top they are given the exception to export raw lithium yet they don't even develop the area

China and Zimbabwe relations goes many years back. During Zimbabwe's early struggle after WWII to liberate itself from western colonization China supported Zimbabwe. That is one of the many reasons that China and Zimbabwe still have close relations and engage in mutual cooperation. Instead of criticizing China Western countries should be supportive of China-African relations. A prosperous and stable Africa is a good thing for the rest of world.

@@solomon2532 Also creativity and education don't necessarily go hand in hand. No one is going to teach you to invent anything. It's just going to teach you what other people already invented and other people are already experts at. You have to make something new. That's why no one can beat Germany at making cars. They invented them and although others have imitated, they haven't been able to match the quality. Even if africans started manufacturing cars, phones etc they would not reach the level of the already established industries. That's why it must be new things that no one has ever seen before. Even foreigners are not willing to share all their knowledge. So education can only go so far.

In the field of electricity and photovoltaics China is in the same position as the United States. But whether it is the nature of the industry chain of electricity itself or the reality of international politics, China is much more prudent and moderate than the United States when it comes to fighting for its own interests and dealing with international cooperation.

Been trying to get a lithium mining claim for months now. We will get it but the road is tough. Many people along the process need heavy bribes because they think I have money 🤦🏽‍♂️ (I’m vying to get a free mining claim bro, I don’t have money duh🤷🏽‍♂️). That's true but I think it's a bit more complex. The West hold the countries they invest in to a higher standard, they don't always follow through with that, but it is a factor. They prefer not to invest in countries with dictatorships, unstable democracies, political violence and civil unrest. The Chinese do not care about these factors when investing in a country and are held to a much lower standard when it comes to giving back to the communities and operating clean projects. I have worked on sites in Zimbabwe that are run by Canadians and sites run by Chinese. The Canadian sites build long lasting infrastructure, pay and treat the labour well and uphold extremely high safety and auditing standards. The only Chinese sites I have been on have been to repair the work they have done. Shortcuts are taken at every possible opportunity, with major safety risks. The Chinese treat the labour and indigenous managers with distain and wreck the environment with no regards to cleaning up and rehabilitating the area. From what I have seen it is obvious that investment from the west is much more beneficial to the African countries than investment from China or Dubai. But we hold the west to accountable for investing and empowering corrupt and violent governments and we don't do the same to the Chinese. Just my two cents

Yep China saw a loophohole, the problem is that they don't give a $hit about human rights or pretend to like the US, that is what African gvts love about China, it lets you abuse your citizens with impunity, also they don't care, in fact under the table handshakes and payments are a norm. That guy was right the US kept looking at us through a wrong lense, however sanctions are not the reason we are suffering, corruption has been mastered in Zim that you need good education to understand it then get angry about it. It's we don't like this land redistribution policy even with agreed treaties. So seriously enable 5% of the population to control 80+ of the economy, is that wise for any nation. They shouldn't have such economic power over a government and people its beyond monopolistic. Then that REDRESS we sanction at all costs after such breach of dialogue and trust. On farming, I encourage you to look at the increased agricultural output in the post-Mugabe years. Record wheat harvest last year and maize/corn is set to be unprecedented this year. This is mainly driven by young black Zimbabwean farmers, including myself (after leaving the corporate world), using new land policies in place which penalise those who do not commercialise their land. Plenty of upsides in horticulture, cotton, soybeans and tobacco with a large share of exports to the Middle East and Asia. There's huge potential for growth as this is still in its infancy and acceleration of mechanisation which I see happening on the ground.

That would be ideal but what will happen is China will bring in their own skilled labors and they will oversee everything. We've seen them do this is in several other territories. If the Zimbabwe leadership was smart they would negotiate proper infrastructure and training that sees locals either leading or creating a path for skilled workers.

Great video...as a Zimbabwean, I couldn't have said it better myself. Well done for interviewing actual Zimbabwean experts on the subject, not just some random person who took an "African studies" course in university. For any Americans reading this, always remember that in every part of the world, your government ignores, China and Russia are more than happy to replace you. They have been at this since the 1950s when the US government decided to ignore most indigenous Africans, and only work with the minority white population in Africa, who make up like 2% of Africa. For better or worse, China and Russia now have more influence in African countries than the entire western world. In order to counter these two, the US must be realistic and consistent in its dealings with the continent. The US-Africa Summit is a step in the right direction, but talk is cheap. The US will need to fix over 60 years of seeing Africa as a mere pawn and start recognising Africa's potential as a major geo-political and economic partner.

Yup exactly. And as we speak, France is getting kicked out of Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Conakry. The neo-colonialism that France has tried to maintain has added fuel to the anti-west sentiment. The only way to reverse it is to come with better offers like the Chineese. The US/the west only got 2 choices: A) Make us develop like you helped Japan develop or B) Keep trying to play the neo/colonial monarch and watch as China and russia make western influence completly non existent and be africa’s main partner for the next 50-100 years. In return, most likely, just like at the Ukraine war, Africa will now keep supporting the east over the west in those big conflicts and the anti-western sentiment will grow so big one day that it will reflect at the UN votes evry single time. Also, say bye bye to the cobalt of the congo (70% of the world’s cobalt comes from there). Without Cobalt and Lithium, the west has already lost the fight in technology of the future because they won’t even have enough to compete with chineese companies who have an abundance of those raw material.

When you've maximized production then you move to the secondary industries such as manufacturing and construction. Not long if we are talking about replacing all gas-powered vehicles with lithium NMC battery powered vehicles. More than likely the auto industry will switch to an alternative for energy storage than something designed for laptops and phones. To me Lithium NMC batteries make no sense for an automobile because of its low thermal runaway temperature. It's simply not safe when charging. There are safer alternatives like Lithium Iron Phosphate.

Lithium is the new oil and it is sad these countries do not build up their infrastructure and make life better for all the people of their country. Look at Saudia Arabia and Emirates. At least they elevate their people lives even though the oligarchs keep high percentages of the wealth.

The Saudi's and Emirates also have indentured underclasses to do hard labor for their big projects - the hardships and human rights abuses are just put out of sight.

There's a lot wrong with this. You could invest in Chinese teaching to equip Zimbabweans with the knowledge to run their mines effectively. Then ask for equipment. And then you can have a homegrown globally competitive lithium mining sector... I'm sure all these "artisans" would have been down with that. But TF do I know, I'm, not a politician, economist, etc... but something doesn't feel right. It feels like the same story with new faces. And the lack of transparency doesn't help. If there was transparency and an equitable deal behind the scenes I could support it

Zimbabwe has an accredited school of mines with many experienced graduates, this can be capacitated with funding and equipment. Primary and secondary education can be modified to cater for mining sciences/technology

it's the same tactic China uses everywhere, they set debt traps and make the countries feel like they are benefitting. Meanwhile they bring in their own skilled workers and ensure that when the country defaults on payments that they own these infrastructures.

I totally agree with you why call CHINESE , Australians etc to mine your natural resources, so many brilliant young minds im Zimbabwe who could be send to schools learn how to process and manufacture EV batteries ,learn mining in general,in addition equip all local people with knowledge and skill so they mine and manufacture complete products which have more value than just exporting minerals, 90% of our minerals should be used here in zimbabwe 🇿🇼 not exported

China isn't a charity. The won't teach Zimbabweans for free, much less give their own equipment for free, only for Zimbabweans to sell lithium back at market rates.

@@andrei-jg6gd Because to process and manufacture batteries, to educate people and even to mine it in the first place, you need the capital to invest in people and equipment. Zimbabwe has very little to no capital.

people be ready to sell out the whole future of a country for the fortune of a few and it will keep happening as long as the US dollar is their reserve currency. Africa needs their own dollar for trade and a strong military so they can set the prices and defend their resources when need be
