I feel like more emphasis needs to be put on the fact the Liljegren (#37) literally committed no penalties on that play. It was Engvall (#47) who did the "stick pass" and maybe should've gotten the penalty (but even as a lifelong hockey fan, I still have no clue what happened on that play and what the penalty was even for)
@KallenFans1
@KallenFans1 Жыл бұрын
You cannot push a stick on the ice, that's a penalty. As for the Panthers player it would be to decide how to deal with someone moving it away after it got shoved into his skates. As for the wrong player i think they just took the easy way out.
@YungKilogram
@YungKilogram Жыл бұрын
@@KallenFans1 people do that all the time especially to their goalies
@mercklemore
@mercklemore Жыл бұрын
@@YungKilogram people do it all the time in most leagues, but in the NHL it technically is a penalty. All a leafs player can legally do there is hand the goalie their own stick to use until the puck is cleared and the goalie can get it for himself. Short explanation: a skater is never allowed to pick up a goalie stick, and the only way to legally give a teammate a stick of any kind is by handing it to them. Intentionally knocking any dropped stick away or sliding it to a teammate is a penalty. There could have been a penalty on both teams, Engvall for sliding the stick to the goalie, and Bennett for knocking it away. You could argue that Bennett wouldn't have knocked it away if it wasn't slid towards him in the first place, so Leafs penalty is arguably the "right" call, they just put the wrong person in the box.
@peugas13
@peugas13 Жыл бұрын
@@mercklemore The rules say is a penalty to throw or shoot, so I think in the NHL they allow the push as long as it doesn't interfere with play - after all the player still has to push it and kind of be out of the play. That's not what Engvall did at all and he probably should have gotten a penalty. Bennett could also get a penalty because he does push the goalie's stick away, and since it is the goalie's stick and it's close to the crease, it is very likely he would try to retrieve it (while pushing a skater's stick away is usually fine, though I have seen penalties if the player is actively trying to retrieve it). So there should be two penalties on the play and none of them to Liljegren. Par for NHL refereeing :)

The penalty should have been given to the Toronto player who hit the stick back to the goaltender. NHL rule 10.4 says "The teammate cannot throw or shoot it to the goalkeeper (this includes situations where the goalkeeper has lost his stick and a teammate is trying to return it to him). For a violation of this rule, a minor penalty for throwing the stick shall be assessed to the offending player (no penalty to the goalkeeper for receiving the stick)."

Just wanted to add that charging means you didn't break stride before hitting. You're right that it means taking 3 or more strides before contact, but you can still hit legally if you break stride. You can technically skate full-stride from the centre line and deliver a clean check, as long as you break stride before delivering the check, and don't leave your skates.

Paul Maurice has a good point both times, that was clearly a make up call for the one earlier. First one, one ref called a bad penalty not really knowing the rule so they had to walk it back or else look like idiots. But in the process, they pissed off the Toronto bench and felt they needed to keep the game even by giving them a make up call. They just waited for a Panthers player to do something that looks like it could be a penalty (hitting a guy so hard he ragdolls onto the ice) and made up a reason. Charging gets called so rarely in the NHL, that's how you know they were just grasping at straws. Charging is one of the least called penalties in the NHL, in the 2020-2021 season it got called only 442 times making up 0.4184% of all called penalties. That's the tell, it's such a rare penalty that it's hard for the coaches to actually argue it since it so rarely comes up. Typically only gets called on goons when they need a "hit that guy too hard" or went headhunting penalty and don't have another good option. Charging is supposed to be "the action where a player takes more than two strides or travels an excessive distance to accelerate through a body check for the purpose of punishing the opponent." As we can clearly see, the Panthers defenseman wasn't even accelerating at the time because he choose to play the puck. The body check happened because the toronto player turned away from the goalie to avoid contact and to attempt to dangle through the crease, inadvertently running into the dman who pulled his arms in not for a bodycheck to protect himself from the collision. They probably wanted to call interference, but you can't call that against a puck carrier. Also, the refs clearly made the make up call because Florida was up 2 goals so if the Leafs scored, at least the Panthers would stay ahead. It's a known thing in the NHL that refs are far less likely to call penalties (especially make up calls) when the power play could even the score or give one team the lead.

Maurice was actually wrong in both scenarios Illegal to play an opponents stick in any circumstance, especially pushing the goalies stick (it hitting the skate was accidental but pushing it away with his stick after is absolutely illegal) Charging is a call not only for too many strides before a hit, but also for blindside hits in open ice, which that hit absolutely was a blindside (charging is just an umbrella term used for all illegal open ice hits)

It's nice watching coaches from other teams frustrated with the reffing lately. As a Red Wings fan, there have been some horrible calls lately and Lalonde doesn't say much. It's just not his style. Good to see we're not the only ones experiencing this.

Not sure it matters, but in the tuna for charging call he doesn't actually get the puck, he only gets stick and then takes him out.
