In the video, Robbie coaches a client to explore how adjusting the inner pictures, sounds and feelings within a memory, can help change their emotional response. This principle is called ‘submodalities’ in NLP and the video demonstrates how to use this technique in relation to a specific, but non traumatic, uncomfortable memory.
The objective of this video is to simply to learn how to use the technique. However, once mastered, submodalities are used in a range of NLP processes, from performance coaching to managing challenging emotional responses. It is also used therapeutically for trauma, including specific techniques for severe PTSD.
What are submodalities?
NLP uses the word modalities to describe our five senses - e.g. visual modality - and submodalities are how we describe how that sense is broken down further.
For example, a sound (an auditory modality) can be broken down using the following submodalities: loud or quiet, high pitch or bass.
Likewise, a picture, (visual modality) would have bright, dull, glowing, clear, sharp, blurred, black, white, red… submodalilties. A feeling (Kinaesthetic modality) such as heavy, rough or sticky can be changed to light, smooth or silky submodalities.
Submodalities can contain a lot of meaning. Altering these inner experiences can improve the emotional responses of how they are experienced. Large images very
close to the person may seem intense, but the same image when pulled away into the
distance can suddenly become far less significant.
The art of this technique lies in finding which submodality really makes the difference. This is called the critical submodality - it is not always obvious what will work, and a skilled practitioner will subtly help the client experiment across their entire range of inner senses to find the one that is ‘the difference that makes the difference.’
