Is the Cobb Front mount intercooler with stock turbo 2017 Subaru STI safe? Is there any issues?

The car would be safe with the COBB FMIC installed. There won't be much of a benefit without tuning but there won't be any other issues. Kyle@COBB

So which IC is better? A thin intercooler with a lot of surface area or a thicker/deeper one with less surface area?

A thinner one will dissipate heat better but you're typically limited by the amount of surface area you can cram into the front of a car. Kyle@COBB

Is a re-circulating valve = bypass value? What would be the benefits of a bar & plate intercooler vs a tube & fin?

Bypass valves are also referred to as a "recirculating valve" and should be interchangeable. Bar & plate cores are generally more efficient and more durable. - Marshall@COBB

It seems to me that releasing compressed air to the atmosphere rather than plumbing it right back in front of the turbo would be beneficial for power. No air-to-air intercooler removes all of the heat pushed through it, water-to-air intercoolers come really close though. That said, with a recirculating bypass valve, the intercooler receives a warmer base temperature every time the throttle is opened enough to ask for boost after having just been closed (example: going in and out of boost shifting gears). Condescension isn't conducive to learning, bro. I happen to really like the air whip blow off valve sound and I don't much care whether that's cool or not.

@josh c - I like your logic on this - i'm surprised no one else commented on your observation... I'd like to understand more about which is truly better for performance and stress reduction on the system / engine... I agree that releasing the cooled but still warm air with a BOV sounds like a good idea - it also seems counter-productive to recirculate charged air with the BPV - i would think that you would wind up with too much pressure returning to the TB when you open it again. makes me wonder if it would relieve load from the turbo or actually add more back pressure to the turbo when it's called again, ultimately throwing off the A/F ratio...

Another downside to the FMIC is that it also interferes with your radiator’s cooling abilities

John Nickel smart! Air flows through the FM and then goes straight into the radiator but I bet it does divert some air! I’m watching because I’m deciding what to put on my new 2019 wrx and I think I want to build the car with as little lag as possible! Still deciding on how I want to build the car!

Our intercooler kits all use a black powdercoated piping. We do not currently offer or plan to offer alternative colors. - Marshall@COBB

Seriously!! Compressor surge off throttle does fuck all to your turbo!! It's when you get on throttle compressor surge that you're gonna fuck shit up!!! Get your facts straight!!!!!
