I wanted to mention that when you are annealing metal, your goal is to "soften" it to make it easier to manipulate and shape. This happens when the metal is allowed to cool slowly, allowing the alignment of the molecules in the metal to become randomized. Imagine a box of needles dumped out so they are going every which way. When you quench or rapidly cool the metal, you are actually hardening it. The rapid cooling causes the molecules to align which makes the bond stronger. Imagine those same needles are now arranged in a north/south pattern. To properly anneal, heat the material up, and then let cool slowly, setting it aside some where safe. Just be careful though, even when metal appears to look cool, it can still be hot enough to inflict severe burns. Anyhow, just some friendly advice from an old blacksmith, take it or leave it as you will. Love the rings and keep up the beautiful work.

Spencer Smith If you're using steel or iron rings you are correct. But most of the metals coins are made of will become more malleable if you heat and then quench them. You are essentially reversing work hardening. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_hardening At the very least they mention copper as behaving like this but nickel (and all the coin alloys I've heard of) do this as well.

Spencer Smith That is true of ferrous metals, (those that contain Iron), but when working with non-ferrous metals, (silver), quenching it does not harden the silver, it's still malleable. Hope that helps.

what a cool idea.....How about using a delrin, brass or wood dapping block with it? I had been using delrin daps but wished someone would just make balls instead. Do you have access to larger sizes say 1 3/8, 1 1/14, 1 1/8, in pairs? Thanks for the videos

Im using them for another ring making process. A ball on each side of a silver ring to make an anticlastic shape.... 1 1/2 would be awsome, I would buy one of your ball bearing kits in addition to the 1 1/2 and an 1 1/4 if you could get them. But I would need 1, 1 1/2 and 1 1/4 in pairs... Let me know what you would charge. What are you asking for your punch kits, I already have a two of Sams kits...but like your design too.....

Is there any substitute to the press? For example: slowly hammering on the ball instead of the press
@CoinRingUSA
@CoinRingUSA 7 жыл бұрын
Not really... if you attempt to hammer on the ball; even slowly, you'll either crack the ball bearing that you're using, (if it's plasic), but mainly you will never be able to get enough consistent pressure on that ball downward to get your coin to fold over. Luckliy, you can pick up a 1 ton "arbor press" very inexpensively.

How did you "slightly modify" your press to do what you're doing?
@CoinRingUSA
@CoinRingUSA 7 жыл бұрын
I had used an extension bar on my original 1 ton arbor press but have since upgraded to a 2 ton arbor press. It makes a big difference in leverage.

sounds great, but why worry so much about the "inside" of the ring, rather than the "show" side? Is the outside of the ring not being pressed medal to medal against the dome block?
@CoinRingUSA
@CoinRingUSA 9 жыл бұрын
Johnny Black Hey Johnny: no; the outside isn't being pressed against metal; as I use a series of specially-made reducing dies that actually help to form (shape) the ring, as well as reduce the ring during final sizing.

what modifications have you done to the press
@CoinRingUSA
@CoinRingUSA 8 жыл бұрын
+Graham Steele Hi Graham; the only thing that I did was that I substituted the 13" bar that came with the press for an 18" long bar that I bought from Harbor Freight that was originally a 1/2" Drive Breaker Bar that was 25 inches long. Hope that helps!

This is a great way to start folding the coin, but sooner or later you will have to finish turning the coin, how do you do that without marring the coin? Is that where you would use the reduction dies?
@CoinRingUSA
@CoinRingUSA 9 жыл бұрын
Bullion Bill Yes Bill, that's correct; and if you're interested in picking some reduction dies up, I have them available at: www.CoinRingUSA.com If you don't see them there, it's because they are out of stock due to high demand but are constantly being made and will be restocked soon.

You mention the benefit of not having metal-on-metal contact, but doesn't using the doming block itself put metal-on-metal on the more important (outside) part of the finished ring? I realize the point of this video is to maintain the inner detail, but are you sacrificing outer detail in the process?
@fencekid
@fencekid 9 жыл бұрын
the only part of the coin that touches the steel doming block is the edge, or rim of the coin when used correctly.
