Cold Start: 1986 Toyota Pickup 22RE

Starting my 1986 Toyota 1-ton 22RE for the first time in a couple of months and it doesn't go well...
After running for a few minutes, the engine idle drops low and truck eventually stalls. When I give it gas, it stutters initially, but then smooths out at higher RPM.

My dad had a 1986 2WD Hilux with a auto but our ones over in Australia never had the 22r, instead we got the 2Y and 3Y.

It may be a little late, but have you checked the IAC (Idle air control valve) goes under the throttle body. There are online repair manuals to check for resistance and other specs.

No I did not, the motor is currently on a stand, waiting to appear in a future video.

Check the timing belt check the timing check the distributor check your spark plugs

coolant sensor is bad making the computer messing up the fuel/air mix

Damn, now that you mentioned it... The temp gauge on the dash isn't working. You're on to something. I think there are 2 temp sensors, gonna go do some research...

A) It seams to run well when you just start it because the cold start injector is adding extra fuel. (so I would eliminate bad fuel) B) If you keep your foot on the throttle can you keep it running? If so then I am leaning towards fuel injectors. C) if you can just try and keep it running for a while, let it warm up. I bet it would figure its self out or a relay will switch over at some point. D) Check Spark E) Check compression F) If D and E are good and you can keep it running you can pull the spark plug wires out of the block and see if the idle changes. If it doesn't change then you are most likely are not getting fuel to that cylinder. -- I have been chancing similar problems with my 4wd Samantha build

Thanks for that advice! It does seem to do OK if I stay on the throttle, although it bogs down if I give it too much throttle. There's a narrow band near the top of the pedal that runs perfect, then it falls on its face. It does get a little better after it warms up.

south main auto repair ( on youtube) had a similar case with a Corvette that ran early fuel injection. It would run fine from cold, the owner would drive it somewhere, leave it for a few mins to get stuff say from a shop, come back and the car either refused to start, or ran like crap. turned out to be bad fuel injectors. If I remember rightly wasn't this truck converted to a fuel injected truck?

It was always fuel injected, but the 22re head (and maybe block) was swapped out for an earlier one. It's a mutt, so there could be a number of things wrong lol.

It's the idle control module, my truck with a 22re had that same issue.

The one at the bottom of the throttle body? Or the ECU at the passenger kick side panel on the inside of the truck?

Interesting, I'd be leaning toward bad fuel, the throttle body injection is only so forgiving, and it sounds like its getting starved, then dumped. My vote is too much water....

I have a 85 pickup that sat for six years I just got it going again for the winter but when I start it up the AT oil temp light came on and won't go away along with the brake and charge lights I topped of the brake fluid but it is still on any ideas anybody?

My 85 did this for a while occasionally one summer, except it's a manual so there's no AT oil temp light. I researched and people said it was the voltage regulator in the alternator that caused the lights to come on, but before I tore into it, the lights stopped coming on and it never happened again.

I put a tape in and it's stuck. none of the buttons do anything anymore, it just clicks non-stop lol. I'm going to take it apart and see if I can fix it. pretty sure something is work out on the tape player.

I didn't think that a 1 ton would have tiny 5 lug hubs and axles.

The truck uses the same bolt pattern as the 2wd trucks with 7.5" axle, but the rest of the rear axle is the same as the 6-lug 4wd trucks (8" axle). This one doesn't have the dually rear setup, so it's kind of uncommon.

Oh I see, well there's also a regards to those tiny under weight axles being used on 1 ton motorhomes over 18ft long. They failed due to the weak semi floating design.

I have a 1985 Toyota Factory 1 Ton Pickup 22R . Efi . 5 Speed . No air conditioning . I drove it for Over 12 years . In December 2006 I drove it throw a 6 to 8 inch deep water puddle . it die'd . & . It has Not ran right since ! . When i try to start it . It starts for less then . 1 Sec . &. die's ! . you let off the key . & . try to start it again . it starts for less then 1 Sec . &. die's ! It does This every time you try to start it ! . & . will do it all Day Long ! . I have replaced the { fuel pump , fuel pump screen , Fuel Filter , Fuel Pump Regulator . Plugs , Plug Wires , distributor cap& Rotor } . I took the gas tank off. & . cleaned it . { it will run as long as you spray gas in to the throttle body } you Stop It Dies ! . today is 4/27/2018 . I can find No One That Can Help Me ! . Since I have been trying to fix it . 2 . 0r . 3 . times over the years . I have got it to start . & . run till I shout it off ! . & .Some times it will restart ! . But the Next Day ! .It would Start . right back to the same thing . start for 1 Sec . & . Die ! . I Love this truck ! . Please Help ! . Thanks George 8 / 17 / 20 I Still Own My Truck . it Still Does the same thing . 2 times it has started & ran for 2 to 3 days . then stop running . it starts . & . runs as long as u spray gas in the throttle body . & . it will do it all day long . if you want to stand they . & . spray the gas in the throttle body . There is Nothing wrong with the Motor . it runs great . As Long as u Spray in the Gas . some one said there was a fuel timer . & . it could be stuck closed . but i do not know were that would be . thanks every one

How deep was the water you drove through? Deep enough to suck water into the air intake?

@@6thGearGarage it was a large water puddle . it was pour down rain . it was late at night . Dark . i do not remember how deep it was . it was 14 years ago . I would say 6 to 8 inches . 10 ft big around . I had drove throw bigger & deeper . But That was the last 1 .

@@6thGearGarage this is a cool old truck i have owned it for 25 years . it has no rust . i think it has 120,000 miles . it has started & ran 5 0r 6 times since this happen . in December 2006 . I am 63 & disabled . i live on a Very Low fixed income . I love this truck . & . I will keep it . 4 as long . as i am able to drive . 1 day I ill get it running ! . No One around here . Knows anything about it . i have tried . I went to Toyota . when it happen . they told me it was to old . they could & would not work on it .

@@GFPRACING that should not be deep enough to suck water into the air intake, so I doubt there is internal damage like a bent rod from hydrolocking. But still wouldn't hurt to do a compression test to check the cylinders and make sure. Sounds like you already went through the fuel system. Is the gas from 2006? If so that won't help. Spark is good?
