When I was in school, the local operator ran Dennings, mostly fitted with 6V turbos. I always say in the front because I liked watching the driver shifting, because the 6 speed spicer pattern is really weird. We were on the way home from an interstate excursion, boys in the Denning, girls were in a 16L MAN diesel with a 12 speed box. On the hills, we left him for dead, once it flattened out, shit changed really quick. I saw our speedo sitting comfortably on 160kph, and the big MAN rounded us up and fucked off. When we stopped for tea at McDonald’s, he had already filled up, all kids off, fed/toilet, loaded and back on the road, and well out of site from us. Man, they used to haul ass back in the 90’s.

@@thesausage351 Ahh, the good ol days. I rode in an old Denning as they were being phased out. Our driver was a scruffy bloke, and drove his '88 Landseer, which I think was a 7 speed if I recall. It was just fascinating how him and the other local coach drivers could navigate the incredibly narrow and hill surrounded streets of our area. He never stalled it, even on some insane hills, and he never hit any signs, but always drove with a style that made it entertaining for us. The only coach I never got bored on. Good times.

Concerning whichever 4 cylinder took at least 2 minutes of continual cranking (I've forgotten which), but esp the bus, all he had to do was pour a few ounces of diesel down the intake. In the bus'es case doing so would've save him from several hours wasted on recharging the batteries. Eight attempts before it finally started? Evidently he makes good money to be able to buy so many toys, probably as a trucker. But for a guy that likes diesels & lives where 15°F isn't unusual, he doesn't seem to know that much. There are such things as engine block heaters, anti-gel (for the fuel), & outdoor kerosene heaters, esp for diesels that may not have glow plugs, where there isn't enough battery power to spare for glow plugs, or where electrical circuits for the glow plugs have failed. Maybe in his next video he'll start that bus at MINUS 15°F. THEN I'll be impressed. Anyone can resort to ether, risking major engine damage. And anyone can turn the key until the batteries go dead

As the owner of 4 Eagles & 3 Prevosts entertainer coaches the past 25 yrs, I can say you bought a 1974 Model 05 Eagle. It's been retrofitted with model 10 roof caps (1980-1986 look). Ride height looks good (may have adjustment left in the torsion bars). All Eagle's were prone to rust, but easy to fix. You actually have a diamond in the rough Skin looks smooth for age, sanded & ready for primer. With a strong 8V-71, new paint, TLC & replace some of the anodized silver side alum, you've have a nice project coach. An 8V-71 bus is slow in the hills, but make for a nice ride on the flats.

Lol. That brings back memories. Had a MAN truck once where the seal in the injection pump which separates the lubricating oil from the Diesel fuel in the pump elements failed. When the bastard was running on the road everything was fine because the leaking oil diluted in enough fuel; but when the thing idled for more than one minute you got the smoke show of your life when you hit the pedal...

Neat video! I grew up on a ranch in Montana and we had many cold days and we had a few diesels around. Just a tip, next time you cold start a diesel , if you spray your starting fluid into your air intake while its turning over it will start easier and it's better on your engine. Sometimes you need a extra person to help such as on that bus. Thanks for posting.

Man, I used to work on an oil rig pulling unit that had a Detroit. Every time we'd latch on a joint, that Detroit would Rev up and we'd disconnect, hook back on, and repeat. In Oklahoma, you can hear that Detroit making itself known on a cold winter morning for miles. A very distinct noise and you hear it, you knew some crew was getting down for a day. Classic stuff. Nostalgic.
