I admit that the 2 stoke DD might not of been the kings of horsepower but the ones I drove started every day and did work something that I cannot say about the trucks I drove or owned that had Caterpillars in them and Detroit’s were certainly much cheaper to repair or do maintenance on than Cats or Cummins and when it comes to a mechanical marine diesel engines in the 30 to 60 foot class of boats I will take Detroit’s every day of the week

They can dish it out 24 hours a day like this in marine use or agricultural water pumping. They were built to run flat out constantly. With irrigation, sometimes they are on auto-start and they go close to full goverened RPM immediately after a cold (summer) start.

Its called having fun all you hatters...don't knock it till you have tried it. I used to take old beater cars out in the woods for one purpose...to destroy them. Kind of a stress relief. I didn't see any signs that said "Stay off the grass" so don't worry about it ..it grows back. Great job guys , I only wish I was there when it happened. Now I think I'm going to go fuel up my riding mower with some racing fuel drop a handful of mothballs in the tank and go run some laps around the yard till she blows.

Don't worry about that engine he has no idea how to move the rev limitor and it's on a conservative setting those engines are in gen sets that do that revving all day long for 50 years

The switch you flipped is for the door, but the air is released from it on one of the air release switches, usually down by the drivers feet, by the door entry and I believe there is one on the outside of the bus either by the front wheel or below the drivers window in that compartment

Those old Detroit Diesel 2 strokes can sure take a lickin'. Contrary to some of the comments, yes, they're just fine with having the snot revved out of them right after startup. They were standard equipment in fire apparatus for that very reason.
