Joker has a quote, from the comics, I think: "If I'm going to have a history, I prefer it to be multiple choice." There is no TRUE backstory for the Joker. That's why there are so many different stories. I think it's an ingenious part of the character that trying to figure out his backstory could drive you crazy, when insanity is basically his superpower. That's pretty genius when you think about it. :)

I love that part about the Joker too. But while there are no true backstories, there are false ones. As great as this movie is, simply the age difference between Joker and Bruce make this one impossible.

@@timokampwerth1996The age difference doesn't rule out the possibility of this story being true. Arthur is mid 30s ish and Bruce was 10-12 so there's not that much of an age difference.

@@passionsquietrage I don't remember if Arthur's age was ever explicidly stated but Joaquin Phoenix was 45 when the movie came out and he was made to look his age, if not older. When i watch the movie and i see Arthur, I done see a 30-something, I see a man beaten down by time. If Arthur is actually supposed to be in his mid-30's, then Phoenix was hillariously miscast. to a Quite frankly riddiculous degree. But even if that's true, there's still around a 25 year difference between the two. so when Bruce becomes Batman in his mid to late 20's, Joker would be well into his 50's.

@@passionsquietrage You don't see an issue with Joker being anywhere between 55 if he's in his mid 30's and 65 if he's in his mid 40's when Batman becomes active? There's still some time that goes by between Bruce becoming Batman and them first meeting. So, realistically, we're talking about an age of anywhere between 60-70. There's never been much doubt for me that Joker is somewhat older than Batman but not a Senior Citizen.

What's more plausible is that she made up a whole scenario that her and Thomas Wayne had an affair and had Aurther simply because he gave her an autograph and a compliment on her smile. @@ColetteCherry I see this Photo more as the point of Origin. Her delusion either ran so deep that she faked the note, though not likely, or this was what started her obsession. His mom was mentally ill. That, the movie leaves no doubt about. Same with Arthur's adoption. She adpoted Arthur and convinced herself that he was Thomas' son. The only question that remains is whether or not the affair was real.

@highlander31527

@@turbulentmind2044 Even that is suspect, as Thomas Wayne is rich, powerful, and a bit shady. If 16 year old Thomas had an affair with the babysitter/housekeeper in 1950, abortions would be difficult to obtain, and his parents would not allow a child from a torrid affair to get in the way of young Thomas taking over Wayne industries. The parents would do everything in their power to hide it, and to avoid paying the mom to be quiet. This would include forcing Arthur's mom hospitalization into mental hospitals where electroshock therapy, daily beatings, and lobotomies were quite in fashion and common at the time. Arthur's mom could have been quite normal and just wanted to stay with Thomas Wayne, and been committed against her will and then fried and drugged. As for the adoption papers, they clearly state that the child was unknown, and labeling young Arthur as an orphan while falsifying paperwork so that his own mom could not claim to be his real mother and by extension have a claim that Thomas Wayne impregnated her would be simplicity itself. There was no such thing as genetic testing for parental proof back then, and would not be available to poor, crazed, mental patient anyway. As for the abuse, his mom was clearly a junkie for a long time, addicted to drugs either intentionally by the hospital under Wayne's parent's orders, or just because the mental hospitals did not care if you were an addict when they got rid of you. So long as your medicated self was no longer a threat. Whatever happens after you leave is society's problem, until you come back. And the mom's records indicate that she came back several times, and that she abused Arthur in her drugged out frenzies. Likely because she saw him as the source of all of her problems. I can tell you are not very old. Young people have no idea what a person's name meant back then. A child out of wedlock would be a huge scandal, and a child out of wedlock with the maid would do terrible things to Thomas Wayne's career before it even got started.

Hey, just wanted to let you know , the Make up wearing Joker was to make him more realistic in The Dark Knight . Originally the Joker fell into a vat of chemicals that permanently bleached his skin and gave him the green hair and red lips. So he actually can't wash off his clown look . Only the Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix versions have make up . Also the scars was just Heath's Joker . Maybe you could react to Batman Mask Of The Phantasm. It's an animated movie which is considered one of the best Batman movies ever . The Joker there is voiced by Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker from Star Wars.

No movies from Mr. Phoenix? That is indeed a crime. There are a whole bunch of them. One of the most underrated actors of our generation. Gladiator, Ladder 49, Walk the Line and this movie are probably his best known roles, but he is good in pretty much everything he's in. P.S. The condition that he's referring to is called a Pseudobulbar Affect. It's caused by trauma to the brain usually from blunt force. As you later learn in the movie, his mother and her boyfriend abused him so this is probably the cause of it. I read that he (Mr. Phoenix) actually listened to people with this trauma and imitated it as best he could to make the condition as accurate as he could. .

When Arthur gets himself inside of the fridge is his attempt of suicide. Also it foreshadows a lot later on in the movie with him "playing" with his gun and changed his mind at the end becoming The Joker descending into madness (the whole dancing stairs scene is a PERFECT depiction of that analogy and I love it! Oh, and the scars, YES! The director of this movie originally had the idea of Joker using the glass of the car's window in the final scene of him using his blood as a smile but actually he was supposed to cut his face with the glass making a smile but he felt so unnecessary and just uses his own blood

The Ring is a really great psychological/supernatural horror film, so are James Wan's films like The Conjuring and Insidious. After you watch the Exorcist, I'd love to see your reaction to the new film Late Night with the Devil. I thought it was pretty good and probably one of the stand out films of this year. The gang of rioters that Arthur created kind of became his new family, so he’s not the only outsider and/or Joker in Gotham.

Thank GOD you actually took notice of the photograph. Too many people fail to even notice it and mistakenly believe Arthur was definitely just adopted when Thomas Wayne’s actor himself admitted he portrayed the character as knowingly hiding his parentage like a lot of real life businessmen and politicians do. Again, Joker is an unreliable narrator so it’s not out of the question to think Arthur’s perception of Thomas is far worse than what he actually is…but the character of Thomas Wayne has been given more of a morally grey background over the decades and having Batman and Joker be almost reflections of both sides of their father is a pretty sensible idea since the two have already been depicted in similar ways to Cain and Abel both metaphorically and literally many times over the years. The reason Joker scrunches up the photo and throws it away is VERY integral to his own character. Maybe Thomas is his father. Maybe he isn’t. But at that point…Joker simply doesn’t care anymore.

Another crazy movie you should check out that's very over the top but ultra stylized sort of like the other movies you were recommended is the movie Planet Terror by Robert Rodriguez. If too is also funny, bloody, and hot.

I loved this reaction and agree with your comments that the plot is superb. I just read Three Jokers graphic novel I suggest you read it. This Joker and every Joker is a different iteration so they are not connected. In the comics we are not too sure who the Joker is. So…

i have a question and anyone can chimeon this cause i really want to discuss this on youtube and on this channel: am i wrong for feeling even more sowry for the criminally insane ike arthur and others over batman who has an even darker look of wanting to save others but he realizes its really no point? like batman has a "need to justify all his actions and risk. everyone dies eventually but really people can save themselves way before they even kick the bucket..

That's not Batman's sole MO. He does protect Gotham because he can and it's the right thing to do, but to compare them it's apple and oranges. Him and the Joker. Feeling sorry for this Joker yeah can't help but feel it

Doctor Stone is Arkham Asylum's Administrative Villain, as seen in the excellent Gotham Television Series. This film is less about the Joker as it is about Arthur Fleck. The "unreliable narrator" is the clown people, who are presenting the film.

Thomas Wayne was NOT Jokers father and no this is not the way it happens in the comics, the Wayne's coming out of the theatre and getting killed in front of Bruce is accurate but Joker doesn't actually have a true origin story, there are different stories explaining how he became the Joker
