You mentioned the syllable count already, so a brief one on the music, the opening/main riff is a sequence of 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is the 17th number in the fibonnaci sequence.

@@wojecire Right? The lyrics start 1:37, 137 is a Fibonacci number. Another way to look at 1:37 is 1.618 minutes. 1.618 is the Golden Ratio. Every time I listen to Tool I find something new to be mind blown haha

Perhaps you had better start at the beginning. "Tool" has been just that for Maynard...a tool that has helped him heal. He's an angry dude the first couple albums.

Its hard to stay angry when you have the money to do anything you want to do. If you are into anger, you will like the first couple of albums from your favorite band. Their comfort will influence their subsequent albums.

Incredibly hard to say since their whole catalogue is so different. They have their unique kind of sound, but still every song has so many different elements. Can't wait for the new album, it's going to be badass. The new posted riff from alex jones is just so musically pleasing already. I think it's going to hit expectations.

I'd have to disagree with this. Wing's for Marie pt2 2 or Aenema could be considered the same for the respective albums. Tool is always pushing it in a different way from album to album. This is a great song for sure but I wouldn't consider it the defacto best or hardest Tool song.

I'm part of the generation that really *ought* to have known about Tool, but didn't. I've been raised in "The South" and been exposed to mostly country and pop music from both my parents, respectively. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized why I didn't care for music at all. I've still got years of rectification ahead. I just wish that they'd known better. At least I can do my part to make sure people know the sort of things they never hear on the radio.

If you guys are digging tool you should sit down and listen to Lateralus the album in one sitting, a completely different experience than listening to individual tracks. Great video!

I always notice songs being recommended but no one ever says anything about their older stuff. Where it all started. Try some of that to hear how it's evolved over the years. With that being said, try swamp song or crawl away from Undertow. You won't regret it.

To me, the song is about the desire for knowledge and pondering the mysteries of the universe, but also a warning against letting that become so much of your focus that you don't live your life. It's like staring at the stars and wondering at the vastness of the cosmos but not keeping your eyes on where you're walking. "Over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines."

And just another interesting point, not fibonnaci related, the you commented on the high hat rhythm. Danny is playing the drum rhythm in 5/8 whilst the rest of the band is in 6/8. Common multiple is 30 so they intersect and diverge every 6 drums bars or 5 bars for the rest of the band.

The guitar player Adam Jones actually does some of the artwork too. He's actually a trained special FX maker. Think he did a bunch of movies. T2, aliens, Jurassic park, I think he may have worked on Predator toi

Multiple time signatures 7/8 & 9/8 I believe Danny the drummer plays them both at the same time during the middle and what he does after that is sick I still get tears. Oh and the time signatures are numbers in the fibanacci sequence too.

Listen to disposition/reflection/triad by tool they are seoerate songs on the CD but they were intended to be one piece, due to practical reasons they were cut.

Great song, great reaction. You mentioned the Golden Ratio, one reference to that, that many folks miss is when the lyrics start. Maynard’s first word is sung at 1min 37 secs into the song, that is 1.62 mins which is the Golden Ratio

As a long time TOOL fan (over 20 years...I’m 44), you two remind me of my best friend and I when we were younger exploring music like this. I love watching your reactions to their music b/c it reminds when we first discovered them too. I’ve literally listened to their songs thousands of times and it never gets old but it’s a joy to see someone else’s new experience. Keep up your friendship through the years. My best bud is gonna be the best man in my wedding in a couple months and we feel like a couple of young guys again awaiting their next album release....ha. Cheers!

The moment you understand Tool and how good they really are - almost every other band out there becomes superfluous and uninteresting (with some exceptions of course). I've been listening to Tool for almost 20 years now, and I never get tired of their albums and songs.

The sequence follows the rule that each number is equal to the sum of the preceding two numbers. The Fibonacci sequence begins with the following 14 integers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 ... Each number, starting with the third, adheres to the prescribed formula. So 1 + 0 = 1 , 1+1=2 , 1+2=3 and so on. Maynard sings using the sequence up to the number 13. The same with the music. If you listen to the drums closely you will pick up the pattern. The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence.Not only the syllables divisione follow the Fibonacci sequence, but also the duration of the song, the time in seconds when the various parts of songs begin ( when the singing starts for example), the time signature and the lyrics itself. Everything in this song is based on Fibonacci or the golden ratio. It's an amazing display of compositional skill. one of the best comments about Tool i have ever read went like this - "Last time I listened to Tool with one of my kids in the room my four year old daughter looked at me and said, "Dad, I feel like I am going somewhere." I love this...I'm addicted to watching people fall in love with TOOL. Anywho, one of the many things that blows my mind about this track is the fact that its 9 minutes 24 seconds. 2 numbers that do NOT show up in the Fibonacci Sequences Golden Ratio..."push the envelope, watch it bend."!!!

Okay so I first heard The Pot by Tool in 2006 in my first year of highschool and it was not on my radar at all. I rediscovered them after I had spent 7 months hitch hiking around Canada (mostly BC) and in my travels started feeling a stronger set of emotions about life and its mysteries. One day in a friend's RV we listened to the Lateralus album in full and since they consistently been a reference/reflection point for me. This song is a 10.

I just love that Adam Jones signature sound around the 8-minute mark of this song. He does it in numerous other songs, check out Swamp Song or Bottom for instance. If I guided someone through Tool's music, I would do more from the Opiate/Undertow sound first and move chronologically. Not necessarily every song, but enough to see and hear the bands origins and its evolution into what they are...well were in 2006.

Pay attention to the syllables in the lyrics, also, the time signatures and certain sections of the song and the whole album really, is in the Fibonacci sequence. It's just a matter of breaking everything down to know when and where it is used. It's quite genius actually.

The pyramids were supposedly constructed using the golden ratio, and I always think about that when listening to this song. Musicians using more than just melody to create a soundscape like no other....that is Tool

Decades later I'm still learning so much about the old albums I haven't even made it to the newer albums lol I'm just finally making it to 10k days. The reason ya love every aspect of this song is a perfect fuckin song man it's a 10/10 other songs THAT THIS is a master piece. But the Fibonacci sequence is in every single aspect of the song! The lyric and every instrument is on it in some form way or another it's insane how they pulled this off it's mad genius this is the greatest band alive if not of all time for a reason! Lol. Several under rated as well! I'm glad they're gaining new fans n always will as their music is so timeless. But I think it's also the fact that the sequence is how the natural order comes of chaos in the universe organically and then when we are in line with that frequency I guess or beat syncs with our heart beat I think even had something to do with shoeman resonance? I could be wrong on that tho.im not 100% but there's a natural comfort the sequence brings out in emotion in music then while throwing it odd they make it sound n feel familiar while also feeling and sounding new at the same time! And man this was one of those songs that the 1st time u hear it u fall in love with it! But let's see it's not all that hard to find the best of tool since there are NOT that many albums 5 in 30yrs and 1s still not out lmao then we got to see how many songs are on each album said 12 but half are intro outro short or long gimmick sounds n effects etc quote from not pop culture but more fringe lol. I.e. the art bell area51 caller. But these things are done to inspire one to really think n question which success lol. Band with ideas so big u may need lsd to break it all down lmao. But I digress lets see a list of tool songs Die eir von Satan. (Gimmick joke track but sound sooo epic dark n sick! Wicked track ahead of its time industrial sounding and experimental music almost. & remember no eggs. Unt kina ayra lol) Lataralus Parabol Parabola (both are epic n almost side A&b of same track or 1 builds up to the other so perhaps do the latter as it's so similar.) Wings for marie 1&2(almost has the feel n sound of a perfect circle song butit's tool!) Oh this isn't a tool only song but Maynard sang with deaftones for the song titled Passenger - deaf tones feat Maynard James Keenan. 46&2 Stinkfist Prison sex (these btw are in no particular order just off the top of my head) Vicarious Schism. I think that'd be a great start and as of what HAS been released before the 2019 album should it make it on time this yr. But I think my all time so far far song is in fact lataralus and parabola until descending and that just kicked vicarious off my top3and is between them for tied for 3rd almost but I like the new riff on about 9min into the song in THIS link from their new album should come out this mo between now n aug. Hey augmakes a great bday gift lol. Tool overall in my opinion is a 10. Listening since the early days of the Opiate album, each album keeps evolving. You would be hard pressed to find a band that puts forth the effort and precision they do musically/vocally currently. I have always felt they are a more modern evolution of rock like Pink Floyd was in their time. Make sure to check out Decending and Invincible that dropped on KZfaq a few days ago. It's all live and first new Tool in almost a decade.

Genuinely enjoy seeing people react to tool. The past few months have been a strain on my brain, and to say the least tool played an important aspect in my life to help me overcome issues or even heal my mind in times of grief. Nevertheless I have listened to them every day pretty much for 5 months and I won’t ever get tired of it. Truly the greatest band I’ve ever listened too.

Another amusing bit about the syllable pattern in the verses is that Maynard has regrets about the concept. The Fibonacci sequence is already underlying everything, especially music, so he feels it was sophomoric of him to deliberately bring it to a surface level.

Simply put one of the greatest bands ever. They're music builds then explodes in your face. Guitar and bass solid as fuck. Drummer one of the greatest rock drummers ever. Maynard yes you will drive yourself nuts figuring out his mind. Deep as fuck and so talented. Best live band I've seen and I've seen a lot. Gave y'all goosebumps huh fellows

7,8,9 are the stanzas you are looking for. 789 is a Fibonacci number. Maynard James Keenan talks about it in a Joe Rogan interview. I wish I could go back and listen to all my years of being a tool fan from never having heard any of it again! I started like one of you at least, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and that stuff. Lemon 80s baby and when grunge hit in the 90s I found Tool's first CD in a Discman and an abandoned backpack at school and became immediately enamored with them! About that time Sober had become a hit. I've actually seen Tool four times, one of them just a few days ago, Friday! It was interesting you guys gave Lateralus a chance. Of all their music previous this exemplified the most change in rifting and song structure and in effect became somewhat of a challenge for me to listen to from a new point of Direction in state of mind. Songs from Ænima, (O Awn-ih-mah, my own phonetics, LOL) differed greatly in radio friendlies. Walking into Lateralus, with their crowning song touting the lyrics, "I know the pieces fit," was somewhat of a misstep for our ears in what we expected and we weren't sure what to make of it, the fans at the time. But of course they're Geniuses so it grew on us and is fucking amazing! Then 10,000 days came back to a more listenable approach like Ænima, but still coupled the intricacies and differentiating rift work. But even Ænima was a step up and away from the recognizable, typical metal rifting that was more recognizable in Undertow. It's cool you guys have taken a liking to them and are making videos gauging your reactions. It'll be something fun to look back on, but something fun in the moment too. Just so you know Maynor doesn't releases lyrics because he wants each listener to have his or her own experience. At least for the first listen, try not to focus too hard in the lyrics in writing Maybe, and just get an overall feel. I still haven't taken the time to master the lyrics so there are still surprises when a different recording reveals a lyric I had wrong and totally changes the meaning of this song by that revelation, and I look forward to that! Still, it's okay to look, lol. You guys enjoy! Don't forget his side projects A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. I'll give you a fun Puscifer a video to watch, though it's unofficial. I think it’s important to understand that tool is really a personal, spiritual thing. And if you pick random songs from albums it can ruin the listening experience as they have been designed in a way in which you’re supposed to listen one whole album in a sitting. But despite that what is your knowledge of the Fibonacci sequence in relation to nature, human existence etc. when they things like “ride the spiral to the ending”, “swing on the spiral” and “spiral out!” What does that mean to you?

@Daniel Gray I guess when they say that I feel it’s referring to riding our the extreme randomness that comes with human existence, we don’t know where we will personally be in 10 years, many small things can and will happen to influence that, we’re really just riding the wave of our own life, which also includes everybody else, if that makes sense
