Let’s start with the most important thing first: Parasite is one of the best films of the year and Bong Joon-ho has cemented his status as one of the best directors working in the business. While I’d love to go into detail about why I loved Parasite, when I caught the film before the Toronto International Film Festival I walked into the theater not knowing anything about the film and it definitely enhanced the experience.
While this is not the norm for an interview intro, I'd strongly suggest not reading any reviews. Don’t watch the trailers. Don’t read what Parasite is about. Just buy your tickets for a show this weekend and see it. I promise you, it’s an incredible movie that is absolutely worth your hard-earned money.
Since I wanted to give away as little about Parasite as possible, when I sat down with Bong Joon-ho a few days ago at the Los Angeles press day I mostly focused on his filmmaking techniques and also mixed in a few fun questions. As you can see in the video, we talked about what TV show he’d like to guest direct, what he collects, why he’s seen Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro over a hundred times, why he doesn’t shoot a lot of coverage on set, why he edits while shooting, the importance of storyboarding, how he still writes in coffee shops, and a lot more.

He can speak english,but he hired a good translator. It’s because he just wanna say exactly what he want. No hesitation, no Ambiguity and so simple. That’s why i like him.

The translator is insanely good. Part of the credit goes to Bong since he was very articulate in his answers but still... She delivered every bit of the message. RESPECT!

I don't think that's gonna happen.... Basically, there should be an understanding of American culture and society, and foreign directors who were born and raised in a country with a completely different culture will have difficulties dealing with it. I say it just in case you get me wrong. I am a Korean who was born and raised in Korea.

Seriously, best I've ever heard. Sports, entertainment, politics, etc... by far the best, it's actually insane that she sometimes gets to the essence of what he's saying more clearly than even his original Korean sometimes.

judging by her voice, this is the same translator who has been with him in every interview i've seen for parasite, including at the acceptance speech! so, this is someone who has also gotten to know bong joon ho really well and has a good understanding of what he means even on top of translating what he says literally

the translator, Sharon Choi, isn’t even a “certified” translator as far as i know. she doesn’t hold a issued license as a translator and translating isn’t her main job occupation. but she honestly seems better than most other professional translators! very little is known about her but The Korea Times did a short profile on her and it seems like she spent some time abroad as a child, then she attended school in korea all through elementary, middle and high school. she went to a foreign language high school(외고) and went to the states for college. she studied film in college, which explains how she seems very knowledgable about the technical bits of filmmaking and other directors’ names and such in a lot of the parasite press circuit interviews. i think she lives in korea again after graduating because in the interview with Sandra Oh, Oh says to her “I should go there to korea.” anyway a fantastic translator, i’m bilingual myself but sometimes have trouble switching from korean to english and vice versa; she does it so quickly and thoroughly it’s insane!

translator's skills are sublime. she didn't only capture the details but also interpreted the nuance of Bong and paraphrased accordingly

The translators write as the person is speaking so they can do a more accurate translation. I think it's the same woman who's been translating for him during the majority of his interviews in the last few months since the film's release.

Translators prepare beforehand for an event and create their own simple signs for different words and stuff and write those down and from those, they can remember what they said, but still its a really difficult job. I'm no expert I just watch a youtube video xd

I like how the questions here are focused on how Director Bong works but they are not the typical overused questions (and I've watched a lot of their 'Parasite' interviews). Great work!

Happy to see his interest toward Mindhunter. It means he still has a lot of interest toward true crime, in which I want to see him go back to, as Memories of Murder is one of my favorite films of all time.

Bong Joon-ho is fluent in English according to the interviews but I think he thinks Korean is more comfortable

Also i think the thing is if you are getting really nuanced or really technical if he says it in english he may know how to translate it literally but some of the meaning gets lost. So if he has someone whose skill it is to convey meaning and nuance as opposed to translating word for word, an english speak gets an even better idea of what he means so it's great that she (the interpreter) is there

On-set editing and storyboarding are extremely efficient methods of filmmaking. Particularly when you are an indie filmmaker and don't have a lot of rental and crew time.

@@skater0224 I don't think it's 'that' important in 'Parasite'. just small detail. mmm.. When Kim's family get a job in Park's family one by one. The brand of beer that the family drinks together turns into expensive. Kim's family wasn't always poor. they became poor after series of failures that known only in Korea(like the downfall of the Taiwanese-style sponge cake franchise). Ram-Don(Originally Jjappa-gurri)is a mixture of two instant korean brand noodles, which were popular among 'common people'(but The Parks eat it with expensive meat) and.etc. things like this are hard to know unless you are Korean. but it's not a big deal anyway. but in case of Bong's other Korean film like 'Barking dogs never bite', 'The Host', 'Memories of Murders' and 'Mother'. I think that you can go deeper if you know about modern Korean history and culture.
