The change in his voice is intentional. Colter recently said in an interview that his new sound is due to the fact that he learned how to actually sing. He says when he started he was "growling into a microphone" and how he wanted to become a better vocalist. He starts talking about the change in vocals at around 13:20. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbyUl6Vkycu6Z4k.html

Also after seeing him sing DWST it looks like it takes so much effort from him I'm surprised he doesn't just drop dead from exhaustion afterwards. He says "a more comfortable place" in that interview and I guess that's just his understated way of saying this.

There are a few things which strike me as an older American listener that might not be in your frame of reference. First, Colter's second-register singing is a direct call-back to "The Cattle Call," written by Tex Owens in 1934 and made famous by the American singer Eddy Arnold in 1944. In the days of American cattle trail drives (second half of the 1800s), cowboys on night-watch would sing to the cattle as they rode around the bedded-down herd. This helped prevent the cattle from being startled into stampede by sudden, unexpected noises. A cowboy who had a natural second register might well choose to use it as the higher pitch would help mask other noise. Second, the song's subject matter is very much in the vein of pre-radio "cowboy" songs. _Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads_ by John A. Lomax (1910) contains many lyrics which share themes with this one. (The book is in the public domain, and available for download.)

That is exactly what Colter Wall says about his song "Night Herding Song". It is literally just an old cowboy song to sing to cattle, hardly any instruments used.

This is generally speaking his style now. How he sings and uses his voice like this is very prominent in his last couple of projects now. Devil Wears A Suit And Tie was a long time ago for him in comparison to this video. Also a side note: he didn’t write this song. This song is much older than him hence the classical sound. This is just his take at it which has brought this tune back in the spotlight a little bit.

Cowpoke isn't a Colter Wall original, it's an old cowboy tune. The original being by Eddy Arnold I believe. Some of his album Western Swing & Waltzes that this song is on is covers like this. Big Iron (Marty Robbins, made more famous by the man in black) is also on the album. I don't mean to discount this performance, because Colter Wall does an incredible job. Additionally, this whole album is in this style (as opposed to his Imaginary Appalachia album).

Colter was a teenager during those brewery sessions, where you reviewed DWST, and he has evolved since then. In fact, he detest those sessions, even though fans love them. He said he cringes when he hears his voice from 2015, date of the brewery sessions. Anyway, I hope he doesn't lose all that grit, I appreciated the uniqueness of it. He has many great songs from 2015 brewery sessions, but they are in the same range as DWST. You should still listen to them, his story telling is jarring, and unforgettable in them. Cowpoke is an old song by the way, not written by Wall, but written in the 1950's.

Goodness!!! You can talk! And I mean that 100% a compliment. You are so good at this! You need to be on fox or cnn or something. It just flows and is so cohesive.

Fine analysis Ms. Julia! Thanks muchly. You might check out the late Texas singer Don Walser's more traditional rendition of this song from his album, "Rolling Stone from Texas" on Spotify. I think it provides an interesting historical contrast to Mr. Wall's performance.

It’s worth noting that this is a cover of an old song by Eddy Arnold.

Just recently discovered your channel on a "rabbit hole" of Vocal Coach Reacting To (insert song I love here). The first I saw was you reaction to Disturbed's rendition of "Sound of Silence." I've watched a few more of your videos and I really like your breakdown of the songs and your raw reactions to them. On that note: I'd like to suggest a couple of songs that I'd love to see your reaction to, if I may. -Shinedown's rendition of *Simple Man* -Seether's *Rise Above This* -Evanescence's *My Immortal* -Dan Avidan's rendition of *Kiss From A Rose* Love you and love your channel!

Was hoping for a reaction to 'From now on' from The Greatest Showman. Specifically the live version looking to get greenlit as a film.

I would LOVE to see you react to "Hellfire" by Tomi Pizur. It's absolutely INSANE! He uses SIX OCTAVES of range in it. Be prepared for HEAVY bass and crazy high notes!

To make a baseball analogy, he's one of those pitchers that has a 93 mph fastball and a 77 mph changeup. Can fool you with his diversity

When Colter moved out of his childhood home, he turned to his father and said "you're the man of the house now, take care of Ma"
