Thinking about my "potential" gives me axienty. I don't want to think about huge goals, I want to feel rested for once. I want to learn how to rest without feeling guilty about not doing something "productive". I want to learn how to enjoy life. I don't want to base my selfworth on how much I produce or achived. I think it's also important to recognize that sometimes what is considered "full potential" is what society normalizes as being what everyone should want. For example, complacency about the wedding could also be a sign you want a smaller, more intimate, wedding. But it's often hard to draw strict lines between these two notions. Trust me, I had a smaller wedding and it turned out to have all the problems of a big wedding!

I''m struggling to draw strict lines between those two notions too:/ Any tips?
@anakrajinovic17672 жыл бұрын
@@zeyneplucy9250 I don't think I have any real tips, I guess it's just a process of sometimes buying in the story of "full potential" and going for it full on (in the sense of what society says) and sometimes resting and thinking again about what feels right and what doesn't and taking that knowledge to redefine what "full potential" means to you. It also changes during your life, as your priorities shift. I guess the key is to continue questioning the mainstream ideas, but still take from them whatever works for you. Hope that helps!

I love your disclaimer about the fact that you don't have kids, or a chronic illness or aren't taking care of someone. So many people give generalised solutions forgetting all the different struggles and issues people could be dealing with and making them feel even worse for not being able to reach that one-size-fits-all solution. 👏

This honestly could be a TED talk. I like the “easy path = hard life, hard path = easy life” part. That really is making me think about where I’m taking the easy path too much in my own life (staying at my boring job, not working hard enough to get in shape, etc.)

I’m not sure achievements mean that much on your deathbed. Most of the time people regret not doing things that are comfortable or spending time with people they care about. I know of a miserable heart surgeon whose the head of an entire ICU and he could care less about anyone dying anymore. I bet he’s going to the grave with regret. It is meaningless until you find self love. Achieving goals doesn’t always equal self love. Accept yourself now and you will die fulfilled. Much love and wishes of healing to those who need it.

There's an interview with William Shatner in the Briddish newspaper The Grauniad where he basically says 'take it easy, nothing matters' but also says if he'd have known that when he was young he wouldn't have gotten anything done. I think Mr Struthless is just using these images as a way to get viewers to think about our priorities more than being literally true. PS love the video, it really helped me as I struggle with being a young Shatner who learned nothing matters too early (metaphorically. Literally I am actually a young Dave who needs occasional reminders that I can do more with my life).

I have a small trick to help overcome that initial bump a lot of us experience when overcoming complacency. I call it "No Option." When you find it hard to do that thing you want or need to do, imagine a worst case scenario of you not doing that thing. Once you have the worst case scenario, tell yourself that "this is not an option" and immediately do it. I've been doing it for a couple of months now and it has been a lot easier to get things done. Give it a try!

I love all this advice but what I love even more is that you started out acknowledging that some people will have different barriers/obstacles to action and that's okay! So much "live your best life" advice is given in the tone of "all those things stopping you are just excuses!!" Which is so tone-deaf to anyone with differing life circumstances that it just sours the whole concept. I like how you said "there's nothing wrong with you" because little things like that really do make the difference.

It was interesting doing the thought experiment while listening to you. I have a chronic illness and I found that my pain actually lessened, because I can literally Not Do It. And I am already taking the steps - they just happen to be tiny. Turns out I'm not really complacent about many things at all, I constantly strive to do it all, big and small, I just have to practice a lot of acceptance over the fact that I often Can't. But it did give me perspective on some unnecessary fears holding me back, which I think this really helped me let go of. Thank you for that! 😊

I sort of stumbled upon this method through trial and error myself. What I find helps is actually scheduling things - not "I'll do this on Sunday" but instead I open my calendar and drop the to-do things into a definite time (remember to give tasks 3 times longer than you think it will take). When I get that notification pop up, it's a lot harder to swipe it away when it's already sitting there than thinking "yeah, I'll do it later today" and catching yourself 34 videos deep on youtube with your hand stuck in a Pringles tube. You have that hesitation from swiping it away because you know you'll be failing your past self who already made the time investment to write it out and schedule it.

As someone who has always struggled with motivation I can confirm doing them feels better than not, 2 years ago I took on turning a truck into a home with all the comforts, I moved in 8 months ago and thought I was almost finished, ha, nope. I'm glad I didn't really grasp how much work it truly was going to be but even now I procrastinate but I always manage to get another job done that makes my life a little better, if you get overwhelmed, just stop and do something else for a while. Its not a sprint even though every boss every tells you it is.

I was in a bad car crash four nights ago. For a split second when the airbag deployed and smoke filled the car, I thought I had died. I feel like if I died now, I would be really disappointed despite living a textbook good life. For years, I’ve lived a life strategizing different ways to achieve happiness and overcome barriers… the barriers ranging from friendships gone awry to just boredom. I’m a hard worker, had a 4.0 GPA through college, but I never feel like I’ve learned how to be ok with boring, mundane days without feeling loneliness or longing for “more”. It felt like a double edged sword, because the harder I worked, the less time I have to pursue deep friendships and enjoy my hobbies. But if I ever knew I didn’t do my best and just enough to get a “B” or “C+” (apply this to work life now), I didn’t feel proud of myself. I feel guilt and shame knowing I didn’t give something my all. I feel guilt struggling with discontentment, because I’m incredibly privileged. This makes me feel disappointed that I don’t know how to achieve real joy- the kind that doesn’t just come when something exciting happens and then ware off two days later when normalcy returns. At the end of the day, I pictured the first version of me with things achieved by reading the Bible, volunteering and putting others first. But besides growing my relationship with God and serving others, I still have a lot of questions about what route in life will bring long-lasting happiness and get me away from strategizing a new ways to FIND happiness each day. Many of the paths seem right and could all be the correct, biblical ones when I say them out loud (without going into detail of what they are), but they contradict each other. Or when I apply them, they work for a little bit and then ware off, and I’m once again left confused. I really don’t know why I’m sharing this, but God bless, and I hope y’all find that true, deep rooted, uneasily swayed joy that I’m determined to obtain through God.

As an old person I can say, as you get older life speeds up until it’s as if you’re on the Cresta Run to death! So don’t waste the time and energy you have in earlier years, for me that was 30s when I knew enough not to be a total tool but still had interest in plenty of new things and the energy to do them. Life changed for me when I ditched pleasing others and backpacked around Australia by for 6months. Taught a lot, especially that all I needed for happiness I could pack in a bag, that I could do anything, just about, and that I’m a nomad at heart. Get out of the rut, off the couch and do anything you would be talking yourself out of if too idle mentally to move. Good luck.

Oh man- my wedding got canceled because of the quarantine and I was relieved as well- looking to plan something very simple for the second go around especially considering the money we lost from planning the first one

Yooooooooooooooooo... "The cup list" sounds revolutionary. Because the bucket list would be the "ideal" life, but the cup list would be a BETTER life :O Like holy shit I am making one rn... tnx!

I just noticed how homey your videos feel, a lot of youtubers have them sitting in their room which is still pretty intimate and has a similar effect, but here it looks like a place where you would sit and talk with a person, coupled with your personality and style, makes a very pleasant viewing experience.

I did something similar to this 3 years ago with Peterson's Future Authoring program and I'm definitely living my better life! I own a great business, I'm on my way to owning my first condo and actually building my first home next year.

I recently turned sundays into maintenance days. Can confirm that doing small shit that you've been putting off for ages makes an unexpectedly big difference. And I believe that better environment (physical, digital, mental) = better QOL = better creative output too. I usually make the mistake of giving myself too much to improve on, but I always rebound, so making small sustainable improvements is great. Hopefully I can actually keep this one going!

The Cup List is highly relatable. We just moved into a new apartment so the tasks I'm being complacent about just tripled. I made my own Cup list (I'm calling it Offline Awesomeness) and tackling #1 right now. Time to put away these books! Thanks Struthless

I usually don't like these type of videos. They are not real, they tell you to get up and do something that you obviously can't right now, otherwise you would have done it. Also, I don't trust them. That's not you. You are good, man. I trust you. And you explain everything, which is super good. Keep up!

I literally chose to watch this video, to get out of cutting vegetables to take to work with me. If you'd not made this video, I'd have been watching a top 10 just then. You've automatically made my life better.

I love your content so much! My mindset and overall life has changed ever so slightly since I subscribed to your channel. The part where u mention that getting things done feels so much better than not getting them done is so real. It haunts your mind 24/7 if u dont get it done but the relief you feel afterwards is very rewarding. It's something that's clearly gonna take time to achieve but every single video of yours has been really helpful to me when it comes to taking those first few steps. Now I wash my dishes before going to bed to make tomorrow me more happy and it works! lmaooo
