Breaking into writing is about the hardest thing you can do. Now let's add being an artist and writer into the mix. Hearing about how Francis found his way, and how our paths were very similar, is both therapeutic and inspiring. I hope this can inspire you as well. He has a wealth of knowledge and his KZfaq Channel shows it.

So excited! Your content has inspired me to pick up a brush pen while I save up to upgrade my glitchy tech. And I’ve already been more consistent about drawing. Thank you so much for providing such stellar, beautiful and calming content. Sometimes when I watch other creators I feel so behind, like I have so much catching up to do. But when I watch your videos and recently Francis’ videos too, I feel like everything has its timing. This is a journey. ❤

This was a great conversation. Nice to hear both of your thoughts on writing as an 'artist' first. One of the biggest challenges I have found trying to learn to write as an artist is that we tend to operate on the sub verbal level... there are very few good resources on how to create a comicbook story from an Auteur's perspective. Lots of great books written by writers (on creative process as well as writing). But I find the skills that go into making comics as an artist and a writer are often so personal... the process can be messy and hard to articulate. I wish there were more examples of people talking about how they actually get the story onto the page in a solo endeavour. Some of the best hints I found were from Mike Mignola interviews.... I felt like the lack of structure he seemed to have (vs something like Mckee's Story) was reassuring :) The visual narrative ability that comes from making comics is clear in both your channels!
@SiyaOum

I totally know the feeling! All the artist writers I know may be visualizing the story first, and then putting it into a written structure. I think the ability to tell a story both visually and literary are innate in all of us. Some may be able to do one or the other better, at first, but we all write. We all have to articulate our thoughts and ideas. I think taking that approach may ease the edge off of being artist first, writer second. It may be a cool visual scene I have in my head, and then I build around that. I'm sure writers have that too, only they may be seeing it as scenes in a movie/show, instead of panels. It's so great to hear your thoughts on it. My best to you!

The pressure under unrealistic fan expectations part was really interesting. In my case it's the opposite: I'm a video professional doing comics just for fun, to unwind or use my hands and a paper. I do (bad) old camera film (bad) photos for the same reason. I must confess I find superheros too boring and constrained by the industry machinery. If you do a video where you talk about your favourite non superhero comics or art, I'll be really happy to hear about your recommendations. ¡Thanks for sharing!

Just a really inspiring interview!! So many words of wisdom and amazing information to take away with (and I write down throughout the video. Haha. I always love taking notes especially when listening to artists). Was so excited when this was announced on Instagram so definitely feeling excited to now get a chance at listening to this talk. Something about listening to different (comic) artists and writers too feels like that reminder and motivation you’re on the right path. Irregardless at least in my eye how long it’ll take to get there. Also thought I’d come back to add I really love the part where he notes that when he stopped chasing the more commercial styles (like she referenced Jim Lee) did he realize he finally get what he’s been hiding from. As someone who loves that commercial comic style and perhaps like him and many others tries so hard to draw exactly like that.. it’s almost this reminder that it’s a losing battle. When your style is inspired by so much, not even just comics. For me it’s been comic books, manga, anime and Disney animators! All in do,e way different perhaps from a more commercial comic art style would take inspiration or insight from. But I think when you do hear comic artists who do try watercolor, or draw in a manga or cartoonish style (I think of the comic series Middlewest), I almost feel like comic books is that medium where there’s room for a variety of styles and mediums. Kinda reminds me now of something Scott McCloud echoed in his book Understanding Comics.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I get excited listening to other creators as well, and a bit of "Oh, so I'm not alone in feeling this way." It's easy to forget there's a commonality, as I mentioned in the intro. I say, get the common stuff out of the way, so we can work on our own journey. We all start out in pretty similar situations. Drawing from the same inspirations, but at some point, who you are and your experiences creates the "style" of writing, drawing, direction, etc. I hope to see you around! Thank you again for your feedback!
@jediapocalypse2919
@jediapocalypse2919 Жыл бұрын
@@SiyaOum Hi Siya! Anytime!! I'm happy you liked it! :) I couldn't agree more with your words. Once you get all that common stuff you start to feel like you're developing a style that feels true to you, and granted like Francis noted, perhaps even a style that may not seem as a commercial inhouse style, or "on level" with Jim Lee. but it's your own, and I feel like that's where seeing comic art like yours, Francis' or even artists I just randomly found like Chrissie Zullo and J Scott Campbell with that more Disney cartoonist take on things, it really allows one (or me I should say haha) to see that drawing allows so many different take on things. Kinda....kinda reminds me of a quote I heard from Stan Lee, where he said that he prefers an artist to draw something in their own style, to have their own take on things. Not just draw it in a way that this artist did (Like Jim Lee for example. Or Todd McFarlane for instance). Because only then can they make their best work. Everyone starts off with those basic fundamentals; but from there you can take things in whatever you want. I think that's the real message here, and what Stan Lee himself might of echoed too. Whatever it may be. Hope to see you around as well! And anytime!

Loved this conversation...very helpful and inspiring. Your videos have become a part of my schedule where I try to watch one during my lunch break when I can. I've read Story by Robert McKee. If I read a Syd Field book, should I read both the foundations and the workbook? They seem like they cover a lot of the same ground as the descriptions both promote the books as step-by-step guides.My intent is to plot out a six-act structure (which may equate to 6 issues?) and then flesh out the plotting into a scene-by-scene format. Then, start the actual script with that outline. Does that make sense? Thank you and hope you are enjoying your manga journey!

Hello, I’ve really been enjoying your videos lately. They’re very well done and inspiring, as is your other amazing work. You both have awesome styles. I’m three books into a long story of mine and I’ve got a great start on it, but it is going to be quite long, and I’d like it to have a consistent art style all throughout. It must. Any tips on forging a partnership for something like that? I was glad to hear you both suggest doing that, because that’s what I’ve been trying, but I fear the length will scare people off. At the same time, due to some of the epic television series we’ve had, along with long form Japanese manga, I feel like long form stories are what people have come to hope for, so it should be an exciting prospect for someone, especially given the capabilities of crowdfunding nowadays.

Thanks so much for your message, and the question. I think starting to build the relationship with three issues in the bag is great. Taking time to foster a trusting, open dialogue about where the artist wants to be both career wise and financially for the first couple of years, is important. As long as you are both moving in the same direction, and being consistent, I don't see how it can be a determent. This is a start, hopefully this tid-bitty info helps!

@@SiyaOum If you can remember trying to get started, I’m sure you know that to hear back from someone like you at all, much less a nice thoughtful response like that, was very helpful and reassuring. Much appreciated. Slightly bummed by your implication that other artists are unlikely to be as cavalier about the whole enterprise as I am, but that’s an impression I’ve been getting, and putting together a more concrete business plan is one of many goals for next year. I have ten years of writing planned, but not so much for everything else that’s needed. He said just getting it out where others can read it is important. I put the first 50-odd pages on deviant art a month or so ago, because that’s where I tend to search for artists, but I’m unsure how much I should share or whether or not there are much better places for sharing “comics” still in script form. But again, thank you very much. Ive been resolved lately to just do it all myself, so this lifted my spirits. And it’s called Color Me Gone by Jack Hazard. If you’re looking for a good read, it’s Cyberpunk at its finest.

@SiyaOum
@SiyaOum Жыл бұрын
For writing, most publishers do not accept story pitches. This is the message, I received from an Editor/Writer, and a couple of other editors have said this: The best way to have them see your writing is through self publishing something you've written, team up with an artist. Even if you were to show it at a convention, to have it drawn by someone, is the best way for them to know you're serious and if your story telling flows. Have the completed book, or drawn pages, along with the script itself. Talent searches are an exception. Even if it's not for a company you want to work for at first, i.e. Marvel or DC. Top Cow has a talent search right now. I will go more in depth on how to get your own writing out there in the next episode.

@@fruttlicious Image is different than Marvel or DC. Since their publishing model is based on Creator-Owned properties, so ideally, you would want an artist attached, or having drawn the first issue, at least. I also know they get tons of submissions for new IP, so it does get lost in the shuffle. That's why it's a great idea to get your work out there first, which sounds backwards considering the goal is to get somewhere, somehow, be it Marvel/DC, or Image. I have a special guest one guest from the next one, that would be able to go into more detail with Image.
