Fun Vlog, Nick. You have a great attitude and love the support you give to the community.. for me I prep my job by cutting the entire magic eraser pad into 1”x1” squares .. put aside then start.. after my dry wipe (fragrance free/lotion free 100% cotton round or fragrance free lotion free kleenix) and my work with the white soft erasers, I will move to the magic erasers but only will i use magic erasers simultaneously with absorene putty. I know you dont like Absorene putty but i seem to have my best results (especially in spine white color only and staple area) when i first use the magic eraser (0 to very light weight=basically the weight of the pencil eraser no pressure from my hand) around edges/spine/white areas, i will discard the 1”x1” square i just used and then roll Absorene Slowly and gently across wrap and spine area. Then i will go back to a new 1”x1” magic eraser square and continue, then back to the absorene about 2-6x each. It works wonders when done together. I have not had issues removing gloss or color since i stay away from all red, yellow, purple, green and black along with the technique i use. Rather than go back and forth like in the vlog or circles/swirles, i go in straight lines one way. I have found out that these magic erasers do pick up dirt grime build up so well but they do not hold the dirt the same. Meaning if i go back and forth or reuse a magic eraser, in my loop i can see more closely, if i use a practice book here, i can see grime/dirt fall back onto wrap into fibers of paper(and like you said, no weight or pressure on magic erasers) and that is no bueno.. lol so i just go straight lines one way each time used. I swear by mr clean magic 2 in 1 and 4 in 1 erasers on most silver bronze And copper age dc/marvel. But u are 100% dead to rights when you say that if used incorrectly or with pressure and/or on red/yellow, yes gloss and color will be removed Anyways, hope i helped somebody with what works for me maybe it can work for them.. cant wait til the next vlog. Take care

Very informative video. I was thinking of using this as a quick way of getting rid of very dirty spots. I’ll still do it but very carefully and lightly. Thanks.

2 years ago?? Really wish I found you before I tried this. Did an awesome job cleaning the whites but removed the gloss from the areas I used it on. Also used the sheets not the sponge

Good video Nick I for one don’t use the mr clean 🧽 for those obvious reasons. Only use the pro plus dry cleaning sponge , the hi polymer eraser & Kleenex that I feel comfortable with & don’t really like the a absorene stuff in the jar

Hey Nick. So to add another comment I also collect the original wacky packages from 1973 to 1977 series 1-16. I had a brainstorm to try and clean those as well a couple years ago. They tend to have a lot of gum stains etc etc.Through trial and error yet again on ones I had dozens of each I discovered the erasers don't work at all on these. It instantly starts removing color no matter how gentle you are. Some of these stickers are worth hundreds of dollars a piece in pristine condition especially the ones that Topps was sent a cease and desist letter and also all of the series 16 , the last original set released in 1977,which are rare.

I've been using the erasers for a while. Through trial and error I discovered some things. First of all these don't go well with old Carlton,gold key, and other dell comics. For some reason most of those instantly had color lift. Now on the marvel and DC I've had a ton of good results. Fist of all these will not remove foxing. They only work well on white areas and the whole covers really but with gentle motion. I've mentioned this before but a lot of the silver and Bronze Age marvels seemed to have an extra gloss layer. I've also found that these don't work well on those either for some reason. You definitely cannot put force on these erasers. I use the weight of my hand at most. I have a ton of before and after pictures that may surprise you. Thanks for another great video!

no doubt for many of us who has been doing this for a while..it is trial and error....I learned many things the hard way but that is why I preached using nothing books and light touches at first...always....when in doubt, don't monkey hammer the book even with a soft tissue...because when it is too much, it is usually too late to reverse.

I personally think the best way to clean dirt. finger print smudges off comic covers/back and rust around old staples. Is to use a kneadable art erasers. It sort of works very much like Silly Puddy. Also a art paint brush when your finished. To clean away the mess.

Cut a small piece off the Mr. Clean magic eraser and wipe in much smaller strokes. They are great for quick slight cleanings. I wouldn't use em on a high end book, but for lower grade and less valuable books they are really handy and cheap. Also, they aren't as good on newer books.

Interesting video, thanks. My question is: I imagine that any type of abrasive cleaning, no matter how gentle the person doing the cleaning is, will result in some gloss and ink being removed. On midgrade and lower grade books this is not an issue. However, with a high grade book with nice gloss wouldn't evidence of cleaning be easier to discern? And, if so, won't a professional grader tag the book as restored?
@etanick1
@etanick1 4 жыл бұрын
You do know CGC and CBCS offer cleaning services right? even if they know it is cleaning and even if they cleaned the books themselves, it is not restorations...cleaning with bleach or other chemicals will get the restoration designation but erasing is just that erasing..good or bad...it is nothing about "is there evidence or clue if an eraser was used"....the question and only concern is, was the book damaged to knock the grades down after the clean.

not much you can do with that ink mark but leave it alone...at least I don't know of any known methods that can remove it without CGC giving you a restoration designation....like using bleach or any other solvents that can disolve the ink.

Similar to the soot/smoke sponge. Too much wiping will lift colour from the book. Very informative video! Hopefully the people trying for the first time will have your words in mind. Could save them from an “oh god nooooo” moment 😋
