I bought most of my comics as a kid from a local comic shop and never even realized there was a difference between the direct market and newsstand back in those days. As a result, I'm sure the vast majority of my comics are the direct edition, though it wasn't due to any conscious decision on my part - just happened to be a side-effect of where I purchased them. These days, I don't think newsstand is even a thing anymore. When I buy, I buy at a comic shop, though I'm much pickier about what I buy these days (so sad that I can't buy my favorite character's comics, because I am not fond of the writing of his book for decades now...).

I'm still in the " Get whichever version you can" category, as Direct editions can be a little cheaper than the newsstand editions. Perfect example....Amazing Spiderman #300!

I always hated the early Direct editions. Because of the black line through the bar code. But mainly because the white diamond. Made the issue numbers too small. Once you bag/board a comic. When going through a box looking for a specific issue. The glare from the lights made it hard to read. Without having to pull the comic up or out to see it clearly. And In July 79-mid 80's? I had 20-13 vision in those days of my youth maybe even better. I think the price variants as collect wise is another racket to inflate prices. I mean honestly who cares? Unless the comic itself had some extra to it. Like a give away or extra pg. I never knew the big M was actually the direct edition too. I know for example Rom Spaceknight from like issue #52-#58 had tiny numbering for those issues. The same issues with the big black M behind the issue number which were the larger bigger issue numbers I collected. After rebuilding my collection over the last five years. I stumbled upon this by buying up. LOTs of Rom and other Marvel comics. They'd have these different numberings size wise and the white diamond direct market copies which I always hated myself.

I guess newsstand versus direct really depends on the year.. sometimes newsstand are more plentiful than direct in the early days.

Ahhh used to love spot the difference games... I also took like ten minutes to find all the differences so I wasn't that good xD

to all the collectors feeling pain over this edition nonsense I remind you that that trading card people have it much worse. I just so happen to have a box of early magic cards printed in German. (they are not alpha or beta but early I had them within my first decade of playing) you would think being printed in a different language would effect the rarity, but nope they rarity is calculated against the total number of cards printed not the language they are printed in. I've heard the same line from different dealers when looking to unload them, thus they sit in a drawer in my basement

I'm wondering if the next video will be canadian price varients or books printed in languages other the english....I'm personally hooked on spanish spider man but they are super hard to find in Canada, the mexican comic shops get a kick out of me calling and trying to get stuff shipped to Alberta. they seem to find my attempts at spanish hilarious

no offense but I despise the collectors market for these reasons. "the one with the bar code is worth more!" It just sounds stupid when you say it out loud.

It's such a scam! They should be worth exactly the same! I've been trying to nut this one out since the eighties, and I still don't get it.
