At one time, RTS games dominated the gaming industry. Classics like Starcraft, Warcraft, and Command and Conquer left it's impact and inspired many new games even today. RTS games may not be as popular as they once were, but there's a strong base of players who love to strategize and command armies. Command and Conquer has a bunch of tongue-and-cheek vibes (the famous Tim Curry escapes to SPAAACE). In 2018 we thought this series was done with it's latest release being a mobile game by EA called Command and Conquer Rivals. And then we were pleasantly surprised with a Command and Conquer remaster. Not just a remaster, a remaster COLLECTION! Made by some of the original team members and even online fans and modders, this leads to a truly special remaster.
Let me know what you think about the Command and Conquer Remastered Collection!

15:36 Tiberian Sons is Frank Klepacki's band. Hardly something you can call a fan band. 17:08 Joseph Kucan actually _was_ kind of dragged in front of a green screen from behind a desk - he was originally at Westwood as a voice acting director. He had done voice acting, but C&C was his on-screen acting debut, IIRC.
@Nyerguds
@Nyerguds 3 жыл бұрын
-Actually, that particular music is credited to "Frank Klepacki *_and_* the Tiberian Sons". They are _not_ Frank Klepacki's band. They are a band that named themselves after C&C and did some C&C covers, but they are not a 'fan band', either; they do non-C&C stuff too. They teamed with Frank Klepacki for MAGFest 2019. They were asked to do the same cooperation again to record a studio album for the Remasters. -Joe Kucan was hired as _director_ for the live action FMVs, and to recruit a cast for them. Not as voice actor. I don't think he worked at Westwood prior to C&C. He is _not_ in the class of "employees who were already there, who were dragged into acting / voice acting" like Kia Huntzinger and Eric Gooch. Kia was a secretary at Westwood, and Eric was a graphics artist. But Joe was _specifically_ hired for his background in theatre, for the purpose of making the FMVs.

You forgot about Dune 2, The first RTS as we know them today start with that game, which was made by westwood studios. When you said that Westwood didn't really invent RTS genre, that had a bad ring in my ear. I know that errors happen so I'm going to educate you a little bit about this. Westwood created Dune 2 way back before Warcraft and that game was really the true kickstart for the genre. There may have been some less know games with the same idea but Westwood with Dune 2 made it all more or less mainstream. It was so good that Blizzard copied the engine for Warcraft because they wanted to play Dune in multiplayer. This started a competition between these two companies and they created a hit after hit and all RTS fans can still enjoy those masterpieces. PS. I get the "Ratatouille effect" (the critic eats the food and gets a flashback from childhood) from the intro of C&C everytime. The sound effects and the Westwood logo are burnt Into my brain. May your legacy live forever Westwood Studios!

1. THANK YOU for doing this video, Westwood was a huge part of my childhood. 2. Westwood's Dune II game came out before Warcraft, I suggest playing it. It has not aged well, but it is a good exercise in seeing the roots of the Command and Conquer. 3. May I suggest doing a mechwarrior game (4... 5 if you really must)?

There is actually a really nice project out there called "Dune Dynasty", which takes the decompiled source code of Dune II and adds modern RTS controls to it. It's pretty much as close to a remaster as Dune II is ever going to get. Even allows queueing up structures :) dune.fandom.com/wiki/Dune_Dynasty

They sadly never made digital remakes of the OG dune files, you can't get ahold of it and if you're lucky to find Original floppy discs of the original dune 2 they may never work so Open RA made an updated version from original files

Just some minor corrections. Tiberian Sons is Frank Klepacki's band who was the composer for the C&C games. They're not so much a fan band but just Frank loving the music so much he continues to play it live to this day. Also you said they had a professional actor play Kane which is.....sort of true. Joe Kucan was the director for the live-action segments for the games but he also played Kane. He has an acting background so he's technically a professional actor but his focus was mainly behind the scenes. Fun fact: Frank Klepacki actually played a Russian guard in Red Alert who got his throat cut by a spy in one of the cutscenes. You can find it in the gallery.

As has been mentioned before Westwoods Dune 2 was actually the first RTS as we think about em, and in many ways could be called the actual first C&C game on top of it given the similarities between it and early CNC games.
@Nyerguds
@Nyerguds 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, it literally is both. It's the first RTS game, by merit of the fact Westwood thought up the term "Real Time Strategy" to describe their game, and in their own newsletters from back in the day (printed and included in the games) they literally called Dune II the first game in their "Command & Conquer" series. More than three years before Command & Conquer itself even saw the light of day. edit: backing up my claim: i.imgur.com/Pi1HHUI.png

Red Alert 2 Expansion: Yuri's Revenge remains probably my favorite entry in the series, it's just completely bonkers and by this point they had gone full on camp with it. You can still tell in the beginning the cornyness comes from sort-of sincere acting, especially in Tiberian Dawn.

The lore is very interesting for these games, and it being a 90s game no other 90s game wanted to tell a story that this game told it was a first of its time and the lore still holds up somewhat, there are some retcons but its hard to know what's what, but it's still cool and interesting. I really hope they remaster red alert 2 and Tiberian sun. Also, id like to add that, Frank Klepacki remastered most of the tracks with most of his old equipment to get that old sound back but using a newer porting technique to get those HD sounds, the Tiberian suns and frank did the big rocky soundtracks like bigfoot, blow it up and grinder.

Fair warning to anyone checking out Dune II though, there's a load of clones out there, and I've seen many, many reviewers show footage of one of the clones thinking it was the original. The only allowable exceptions there are the OpenDune derivatives; OpenDune is actually a complete reverse engineering of the original game's source code, so it really does play 100% like the original game. OpenDune-derived projects like Dune Dynasty are probably the closest Dune II will ever come to a real remaster. (PSA: Unlike OpenDune, the OpenRA project is _not_ a reverse engineering of the original Red Alert, but a fan clone built completely from scratch.)

Man... Jirard... I bought this on launch day (my birthday!) after having played the mess out of RA1 and 2 back in the day. I only got like an hour in and was kinda overwhelmed having been out of PC games since, well, pretty much RA2. Seeing this makes me want to go back in to the remaster, turn off all of the "modern" controls, and go back to what I probably still have muscle memory from. Wasn't sure I was going to watch this, but yeah, I'm in. Like you always do, my current gaming schedule just got sidetracked because now I gotta play through this collection.
