Company of Heroes 2! Just like part 1, this one is only comprised of the cinematics since the gameplay really throws off the experience. Excellent story, and all credit to Relic Entertainment for their excellent work. We hope you enjoy the story!

So weird fact at 4:43 : The soldier who is surrendering in this scene is not actually German, but rather a "Eastern Volunteer", AKA an "Osttruppen." His patch specifically denotes him as a member of the "Russian Liberation Army", a unit of Russians who turned their backs on the USSR for various reasons but likely stemming from the harsh dictatorship under Stalin and his Communist Regime. Despite this, he speaks German, AND attempts to surrender to *Red Army Personnel* , which is really not smart in his case as all members of the Russian Liberation Army were to be shot on sight even when surrendering as they were "Traitors to the Motherland".

14:10 This is one of the scenes which just simultaneuosly makes you dread to know the extent to which Leningrad's struggle went, and at the same time you want to know more of it or watch a movie about it. And the choir & music when Pozharsky and Isakovich first discuss in the hospital conveys the sombre, haunting nature of those hellscapes well. Overall the entire campaign highlights the cruel, often inhumane side of war, even if it overdramaticizes those events. I'm no historian, but I have read about WW2 a lot - especially the Eastern Front and Stalingrad. It truly was a hel,l on earth near the end. And Leningrad....... was even worse. These events are a haunting reminder of just how dark us humans can get.

This game draws attention to Soviet crimes but it also uses alot of myths like the human wave tactics and executions through the blocking detachments.
@Mikalent
@Mikalent 10 ай бұрын
We have proof, and even Russian chronicles, of using Human wave tactics, as well as blocking detachments that fired on Soviet Troops. Now, did it occur in Stalingrad? No, primarily because Stavka by that time had convinced Stalin to leave to war to them. But in the first months of the war, when Stalin was directly commanding the Red army, Barbarrossa was in full swing, and the NKVD was at the height of it's power, these things did occur. Especially in the first Russian counter-offensive against the Germans in 1941 that lead to the encirclement of over 300 thousand Soviet Troops. Blocking detachments where used to attempt to prevent the pocket from shrinking further, and where prevalent in the 29th Motor division. As for human wave tactics, they where used in Stalingrad, maybe not intentionally, but when you have the option of staying on the landing docks/beaches that are being shelled and bombed constantly.That or charging an MG position with the rest of the men in your boat to get out of the landing areas, you're gonna charge the MG, or get crushed by packed bodies or artillery. Without artillery, tank, or air support, you kinda only have the option of human wave esq tactics. We also know the Soviets purposely stopped a major offense during the Warsaw uprising, and refused to sent aid or material.
@ivanonlyone7160
@ivanonlyone7160 3 ай бұрын
It isn't a myth. It did happen and russians even use these human wave tactics in Ukraine. The blocking detachments was a real thing, order 227. Wagner in Ukraine also used that blocking detachment tactic. Game depicts violency of USSR well, USSR has the most losses than any of the sides in the war, thanks to the higher up comms, "butchers", that never valued the lifes of the infantry. USSR drowned the enemy in own blood.

I didn't get any notif of reply while I'm constantly spammed about some meaningless likes, just revisited my old posts... Among the inaccuracies enough to mention that execution for retreating was implemented quite briefly, while it's a constant mechanism in the game. Just as well as burning own civilians in their homes or executing soldiers who have rescued their officer is really excess even for Soviet standards (it'd be another thing if they were caughttelling political jokes or something, that happened with overzealous comissars). And these are story-significant things, there are lots of discrepancies about uniforms, military ranks etc. Generally, far as unsympathetic I am to the common Russian image of spotless heroic liberation, focusing the entirety of campaign on the darkest side of Eastern Front is excess and offensive. In Poland we indeed focus on that dark side (of "liberation", what happened on the Soviet territory is viewed with far greater sympathy) because it was forbidden to discuss and we were force-fed the opposite propaganda for decades (as the result of the "freedom" the Soviets brought us), just to even some balance (especially that Russia still tries to force that narrative down our throats). The fact is that Soviets just in 1944 have dealt more losses to Polish resistance than the Germans did in 5 years (due to the fact that with Germans it was " You have to catch me first", while Poles at first approached Soviets as allies, offering cooperation and thus being easily wiped out). Russians still either don't know that or utterly disregard it in their perception of liberation. Still, in a war game the focus should be on the war effort (which was indeed remarkable), not about preaching "how much *our* side is evil". Mixing real Soviet atrocites with "muhahaha I'm evil and shoot puppies for story reasons" makes it far easier for Russians to reject even the real ones as mere slander.
@kirknay
@kirknay 3 жыл бұрын
@@SlavicWolfPL I'm pretty sure a ton of the story was with the intent of the last cinematic's quote. Basically saying "we won, but at what cost to those who got us here?", but also putting a ton of the blame on the higher ups of the USSR, who the devs thought escalated casualties way beyond what they should have been. There were a ton of dark parts of that war, but yes, a lot of this game is either Fury esque compilation of single events to make a cohesive story, or extreme liberties with the facts. The end result is something that screams that these events were everywhere and commonly told, not the exception to the rules.

I´m a Russian myself and I tell you, our people have to stop to view their history trough rose-tinted glasses once and for all! Brave Russian women and men won this war not the dysfunctional and tyrannic regime. While our people were facing the Nazi onslaught they also had to face Stalin and his machinery from behind which was fucked up. I´ve played the game and I was happy to see that the developers casted light onto this aspect. Sadly some scenes are over the top and provided without good context which might left the true accounts here unnoticed as it will make it easier for people to shout "fAkE". However you don´t need to consult history books but just to talk to people who were there. The problem is that there aren´t many left of this generation and they usually don´t talk that much because under Stalins rule you learned pretty fast you wouldn´t survive for long if you had done that. And you know what? Playing this game made me EVEN MORE PROUD being Russian. Because beside all this murder, fear, and misery Stalin caused they managed to hold their ground and defend our country against an brutal invasion. Too sad that even more of those people were rewarded with deportation and death afterwards. Thousands of Russian hero tales, never been heard but not forgotten. But what puts me in shame are the fact, that there are still fellows exists, who think straining the truth and preaching lies like a regime´s tool back then will do us a favor. YOU DO NOT, you just disgrace the legacy of true Russians who suffered and died.

Stalin was a brutal dictator but his way of governing actually saves Russia in WW2 as well. His Iron Will holds the Red Army in place. The legendary t34 also exist thanks to Stalin as well since he was the one who allowed the project while others laugh at it. But in peace time its a different story like you said. Stalin had his ups and downs towards the Russian people.

Here is something that might be a food for thought. What if Isaackovich's superior were actually anti-semitic, albeit subtle? I mean they might have kept him around for PR, making due with still-existing Jewish officers (500,000 of them; a few of whom are commissars), Isaackovich not being too vocal to his religion or not strict about his beliefs, and the fact that he is "one of the good ones" but still has plans to get rid of him. Edit: Or maybe they picked a Slavic-sounding name and doesn't realize the implication of "Lev Issackovich" as a hint of Jewish ethnicity to those knowledgeable about Russian Jews.

@@alexeistrife56 it is not. It shows the true nature of USSR higher ups and commanding, and how regular people, soldiers, suffered from this. People from post ussr countries, who aren't affected by ru's propaganda "THE GREATEST, POWERFUL AND UNDEFEATABLE USSR" bias can confirm that. You clearly didn't get the morale of this story, which is "Despite terrible commanding and brutish attitude towards soldiers, the war still has been won, by real heroes - regular soviet soldiers". This is what message the game sends. It's even more clear in the final dialogues.

The part where they kill the soldiers for rescuing the Captain isnt realistic. You would most likely be awarded. Not killed. NKVD Officers are there to insure they stay loyal to the party. Not kill people because they desert their post. And plus its not desertion when they rescure their own captain.
@australianword3812

Stalin was a massively paranoid psychopath, who was known before the USSR came to power as a criminal muscleman. Lenin tried to give him a harmless desk job as a secretary, but when he died Stalin used it to his full advantage and seized power quickly. He didn't particularly care about how skilled his officers were, he just cared about their loyalty. As a result, those who had even a shred of doubt to their loyalties were purged before and after WWII many times, with the only time that didn't happen being during said war. It ended up biting him in the rear later on, as he had all the doctors who could save his life killed, while he had a brain tumor killing him.

During 1932 there were the first purge order by stalin to clear any officer that still "loyal" To Russian white army but actually it was to send all Russian officer who still loyal to true socialist successor Trotsky which was a inside political struggle at that time. But his paranoia still exist believing that there are people who want to coup him, so after the war stalin order a second purge due to his worry those who are "heroes" That return home after the war will Revolt against him due to his incompentence in deciding order in war room that led the german almost took the entire western russia. His paranoia were still in play and there were third purge but was cancelled due to he himself died.

The Germans were actually much better than the Soviets, this is consistent with the post war memoirs of De Gaulle, Churchill, and even Stalin himself. The dirty nazi mythology is a construction of American Academia to elevate Americanism above European regimes as the US spread its ideological tendrils across the world. To be against Germany is to be pro Colonialist and pro Imperialist.

I find it truly sad and tragic so many millions of people had to die for the sake of winning the war. Russia was capable of waging a better conflict and had the right tools. But the body count sadly speaks wrongly of that; that so many people died for the sake of defeating Germany. The message I wish was conveyed the most; was the fact that not everyone in the Wehrmact was evil; and not every Russian wanted to be a communist loyalist. There were tens of thousands of human beings on either side who had no choice but to fight each other and die. And for the allies.... America was no better than Germany; because we swept our crimes under the rug. There was a lot of humanity in the Eastern front; a lot of brothers, sisters and people who fought and died for so little. I hope one day that a conflict like that never happens again; because the Victor will hide the truth again and hide the reality that the good guys can't win a war without doing evil things. In WW2; the only good guys were the ones who refused to lie
