Robin Wood compares the Gransfors Bruks carving axe, the wildlife hatchet and the Robin Wood carving axe side by side and as a bonus bangs out a quick spoon blank. Note the handle design has been changed slightly a since this video was made.

I’m new at using an axe, so I don’t have a lot to add except for: your customer service is stellar. I ordered online before I fell asleep and when I woke up the tools had been shipped and I had a tracking number. The price was fantastic, there was no wait, & the axe/tools were exactly what you said they would be. I couldn’t have started this hobby in a better way. Thank you very much.

My new Robin Wood Carving Axe came today. Photos, videos and/or words don't do the little beauty justice. The feel, in hand, is brilliant. Very, very sharp and deftly finished. Perfectly (PERFECTLY) hung and a Hickory handle that is so straight and tight grained it boggles my tool loving mind. I love the faceting and striations down the haft. The grip is ideal...anywhere along the handle, allowing for a very high level of control. Light and nimble, lean and mean, a cutter with a lovely curving slicing blade. Yeah, there are those two GB axes one could compare it to but others exist out there as well. This is the only one of all of them that I've had in hand...and it'll do. PS: also ordered one of Paul Dore's solid looking masks. If needed I usually have sheaths made by one of two makers here in the USA, but keeping Robin and Paul together on this little venture just seemed right. I've seen the phrase "couldn't be more pleased" applied to these quite often. Now I know what it feels !like.

I like lighter axes, and that looks very nice for some spoon and bowl work. Good film - thanks.

One thing I don't care for on the GB wildlife hatchet is the diameter of the handle. I find it too small and my hand started to ache after using it for a while, so I wrapped paracord around it to thicken it up. Much better now. I like the look of your handle too.

Robin, your axe has the toe raised above the eye in the same way as an Oschenkopf or to a lesser extent, Hultafors axe. I prefer the straight head GB/Wetterlings pattern but you seemed to use that raised toe for dishing out the spoon blank (with great precision I might add). I have never carved anything in my life but now that I've retired I want to learn to do a bit more than chop up firewood all day. I have 2 of the smaller classic Hults axes but am I likely to get into bad habits trying to carve with them? I'm baulking a bit because I have about a dozen different axes and have difficulty justifying the purchase of another one to myself :-))

What is the edge profile? Is it beveled on each side, or is it flat for hewing? Thanks!

Bought a Gränsfors axe not so long ago, and one thing about it compared to the Robin Wood is that the handle on the Gränsfors seems a lot nicer than on the Robin Wood.

I noticed your handle has facets rather than rounded profile. Do you find you have a better feel for the angle you're cutting at with that? Could you add a link in the description to where to buy your axes?

I like a faceted handle it gives good grip and feel, it's a personal thing. Good idea I'll add that link.

Nice video, thanks for sharing, Robin! 'The handle question' is quite intriguing. I've been making my own axe handles for about 20 years now and until recently I always made them rounded, facets on axe handle always had, I don't know... unfinished look to me. Some two years ago I had to make a handle in a hurry, I didn't have time to use the grinder and make it all rounded and smooth but surprisingly it sat in my hand very well. It did have definite facets but it was very comfortable and yes, I seemed to be that much more' in control' - which is always a good thing with a sharp instrument I guess:) By the way, the axe on the video really looks great, I mean the proportions, shape of the head, shape of the handle and all, and the eye of the axe is good-sized too (I have at least one axe which is great otherwise but has a bit too narrow eye, so you can't really use it with any force, especially for levering, the handle might just break off. Again.)

I got a Wildlife ax when I Got my Tormek wet grinder. Almost gave away the ax. Now I am getting interested in spoon carving I am glad I kept it. I watched you ax sharpening video and wondered when sharpening do I follow the profile that came with the ax? i understand carving axes have a flat bevel on one side and a steeper bevel on the other.. Will i have any problems using it like it came from the factory? Thanks for your sharpening videos both ax and spoon knife.
