The comparison you're dying to hear! Two synths enter, but only one will be crowned KING!
Ok actually they are both awesome machines, but today's experiment is to show of how close we can get the newly announced Juno-X to the classic 106 from 1984 that inspired it.
We'll start with a initialized patch and build the sounds up as closely as we possibly can.
That being said, my poor old 106 is approaching 40 years old now and it has its own set of quirks and issues. After about an hour the outputs start to crackle and a some of the faders and pots are a bit scratchy or skippy. Its still an amazing sounding instrument tho, and the Juno-X really holds up to that legacy.
Check it out! And let me know what you think.
Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
0:16 - Init patch
1:43 - Juno Chorus (brings my left output back from the dead!)
2:19 - Sub oscillators
3:09 - LFO pitch delay
3:48 - Saw waves
4:37 - LFO to PWM
5:52 - Filter comparison
7:10 - Envelopes
8:18 - Patch building break ❤️
9:10 - Double Junos for some reason
9:35 - Big poly sounds
10:06 - Exploring sounds
11:14 - Portamento slides
11:55 - Last sounds

Thank you for a great comparison and demo with real musical examples. I have to say it's quite fantastic how similar the Juno-X sounds to the Juno-106. I have a 106 myself since the early 90's and it struck me instantly on both this and other KZfaq demos how Juno-ish the X sounds. And it looks great as well.

@@MRTUNA Perhaps, ... but for most of us (or let me say "for me") that won't be of any "great concern". Considering all the advantages of the Juno-X, ... We've landed at a nice airport, with plenty of Taxi's (figuratively speaking) to take one where they "want to go". Plus, we're already "Back to the future", as well. Great comparison! Does the Juno X have an Assign Mode (Poly 1, Poly 2) like the 106? If yes, where can I find it? And do the built-in 106/60 models also support multiple PWM modes (incl. menu diving)? Or does this only apply to the Juno X model?

Great comparison and demo! But I love reading the comments and seeing so many people say things like "Nothing beats the warm vintage electronics of the 106. The 106 wins hands-down." In a raw or exposed comparison like this of course you're going to hear differences. There are so many variables, it's impossible to get them to sound perfectly the same. Yet in context in a song or live performance, I'm pretty sure not a single person would be able to tell if it's the 106 or X. Technology has come so far that in real-world applications the difference between vintage and emulation is negligible at best. No one cares if you're using true vintage electronics or not. Just chill and make good music with whatever works best.

What about musicians just wanting to make music with instruments that truly inspire them? Of course the Juno X is perfect for gigs, but what about wanting to have inspiring instruments to play and create on? And no Vst or digital emulation I’ve played or heard has ever truly solved the voice allocation differences between vintage analog synths and digital recreations. Play some 5 and 6 note chords on those machines and the difference will be immediately felt and heard. Nothing does vintage analog like vintage analog.

Another highly creative synth by Roland, Thank you for showing us. Been trying to understand the need for a copy of a vintage synth for a decade now. Musicians want the "exact" sound duplicated...okay...for nostalgia or because you wanted one at the time and couldn't buy one. I understand this second chance at a synth you missed out on. For me it was the JD800 and the JP8080, but I don't buy old synths because I play them long and hard, and old synths are going to fail, I can't afford the repair costs, if repairable. I had an analog Juno and a 707 I bought new in the 80s. I didn't like them, I still don't, since I lived at that time there isn't a mystery to them, todays synths are far superior in creating new original sounds. I am always looking for highly sound creative synths, but not in the past. The analog resurgence of the 2000s showed me how well digital and analog can work together in creating new sounds never heard. Today I think the real skill of a keyboardist, besides being a master of their instrument, is understanding sound and effects design and the layering of different synths (analog and digital) and knowing ahead of time how they will sound together. (applies only to recording, stage use is, most the time, completely different).

Similar sounds, but the modulation depths and envelope settings/attack/decay shapes probably didn't match entirely (also I wonder if it's possible to limit polyphony to the same as the original 106 - note stealing has a big impact on the overall sound). In the end it doesn't matter that much, the X can no doubt produce a lot of nice sounds and can sound more analog with some detuning/modulation, the more important question to answer is does the UX suck or is it better than the Jupiter X/Xm. It certainly looks intuitive in terms of the panel for 106 style sounds, but the other synth models maybe have some menu diving e.g. for modulation assignments (and Roland menu diving is not so fun in my experience)? It would be interesting to test wide & slow pitch modulation on high notes with a saw wave to hear if there's any significant aliasing - I'd like to know the details of the waveform generation and if it's wave-table based, how much oversampling, internal sample rate, and what kind of sample point interpolation is used (I develop synth plugin software - so this is my concern, probably not so interesting for most folk). How about a comparison with the ACB version of the 106 model?
@revelationsoundstudio
@revelationsoundstudio 2 жыл бұрын
The Juno X perhaps is 2 percent different. However with its XLR outputs, higher polyphony, the ability to turn off the hiss on the chorus, and all the additional sounds makes it the best choice for someone who wants authentic Juno sound. I wonder if they made some mild updates on it over the Jupiter X to get closer to the Juno 106

Your points make sense, but for me I feel like why not just use their plugin if you’re not getting an analog synth? If I’m spending $2000 on hardware I want analog. Trust me a lot of these extra features are stuff you wouldn’t miss on analog synths. The Prophet 6 is my main Poly synth, It’s unbelievable and don’t ever feel limited. If I want to do some more complicated stuff I’ll use a plugin. If this Juno X hardware synth is using their Zen technology then it’s the same sound engine as the plugin anyway, so use the Juno plugin and put $2000 towards a use analog synth or a new Korg Prologue 16. Also hardware is hardware right, with the plugin you can use 4 of them simultaneously if you want but you can’t do that with hardware. You need set up 2 tracks in your DAW (Midi & Audio) then play in the part, edit the midi, print the audio, move on to the next track. If you wanna go back and change something, you gotta do it all over again. If it’s not analog, it’s not worth the hassle of hardware and $2000 out of my bank account imo.

definitely a much easier-to-use interface than the JPX, and without much sacrifice to the panel controls. I plan to do another direct comparison with the System-8 because I know people are dying to say the System-8 is the one to have, but I really really enjoying just 'playing' the JunoX.... its got some serious build quality and a ***Beautiful*** keybed to play on. its just a nicer experience, even if the System-8 is more nuanced and detailed, the JunoX just sounds 'GOOD' to me.

like it, very close and the expanded capabilities are phenomenal. The 106 edges it out in sound slightly however.... it is in the attack of the notes for me. The analog is more 3d and punchy and the digital is a bit more flat dynamically. The actual sound character is spot on though it just the analog jumps out at you ever so slightly. Would take the x without complaint and throw it into a punchy compressor to give it a bit more pop. Maybe there are some settings under the hood you can mess with too? How is the new 3.0 update for the Jupiter-x? I hear it is pretty good and they redesigned the menu to be much more friendly and fast, would you agree?

Agreed, this is virtually the same of what I was thinking, even on on how to make it match up more with the 106. There is definitely a few tricks up our sleeves that can make it just about spot on. If nothing else, this is a good board to develop on then maybe use a real 106 for final tracking if needed. just to take some wear and tear out of using an original.

Much of the difference seems to be owing to differences in polyphony. Cutoffs after 6 notes (Juno-106) seem to "unclutter" the soundscape. The greater polyphony on the Juno-X leads to a perceived mushiness or lack of clarity. I think a "note limit" feature could clear this up.

Vintage 106 sounds more vibrant, alive and when the high resonance gets engaged on that slow envelope at 7:30 its game over for the digital X. I think this is where Zencore reaches its limits. If ypu have the Xm there is too much overlap between these two. I was actually pretty disappointed seeing the Juno-X announcement, because to me it was like a JP-X/Xm repackaged. Now I see some reasons for getting it. Having the Xm myself, I would choose either or, not both, depending on your needs and use. If I had the JP-X I would stick with that. I may exchange my Xm for a Juno-X at some point, but I also think the new OS 3.0 update is great for the Xm. One advantage for Juno-X over Xm is aftertouch. Another physical controls.

For a live player it might even make sense to have the Xm and the Juno-X. Having two separate keyboards (even though they are technically the same) gives more playing options. For mere mortals (or drummers like me) having both is probably overkill, even though they would look lovely together. 😃 I pre-ordered the Juno-X because I much prefer sliders and the cleaner layout and will sell my Xm. @@yongamusic Well, 2 separate keyboards may be a good thing, but the Xm keybed is sub-standard although an excellent minikeybed. I know Roland is playing to the nostalgia factor, and competing with Korg's reissues of famous synths, but wouldn't it be cool if they simply did a JUNO-206 or a betaJUNO with completely new contemporary styling? We're competing with Korg? Amusing but not so much no. They don't have the footprint. Sys8 is not in the same device category; that's one place where people are going wrong. Certainly it has the sonic ability - but the intention of the underlying design/tech is very different. Jupiter/Juno/Fantom are in a range to which you cannot apply sys8. That's intentional. Comparing them is obviously possible but mistakes the purpose of the different instruments. As far as cost goes - it's at the low end price bracket for our musicians generally.
