Thank you so much for posting this video. There is so much meaningless information available it's almost impossible to know where to begin. Your tutorial allowed me to decide on a model (#4), and even then it took a while to determine how to order that specific model. I bought two which arrived today and I had very little trouble setting them up because of your video and the information on your web forum. Thanks again!

Excellent work. A lot of confusion exist in the description of the dash cams on ebay. I read on line that lots of people ordered the "HD" models but got the standard definition. I think a lot of misinformation is in the market place for dash cams. I think some sellers are intentionally taking advantage of all the lack of info and confusion to make more profit from tricking people into buying their miss described camera. Great work. I ordered #4 HD-027, but I will see when I get it.

My compliments. Difference in quality is very clearly visible demonstrated. I already bought No4, but happy to see it was the right choice. Pity there are so many brands for the same cam, and I have to wait if its is exactly the same as shown in this video.

I've been looking at Dashcams as due to a change in career I now drive trucks for a living and these were mentioned as a way of protecting yourself in the event of an accident. Your review is brilliant! So many positives to say so I would suggest having now bought one of these cameras via Ebay that maybe you could set up a link where you get commission?

Nice video.. just few questions. 1. Battery life.. how long can the battery last after each charge and life time? 2. What is the charging time before the next use? 3. If the SD card is full, would it go back to the beginning to record automatically?

Thank you so much for this review. I purchased one on eBay yesterday H198 which it says it records in HD. I wanted to purchase the DVR-027 but think I may have ordered the DVR-047. Which until your review did not know about the HDMI port difference as they ALL look the same and most of them claim to be HD. But when this one shows up either way I will keep it. And just end up ordering another one but this time making sure it's the DVR-027. Thank you again for this information. Scotty

Hi, I own #4 dash cam and overall I find it pretty good. However, it did stop working about a month after I got it. Today I took out the battery and reinstalled it and found that it's now working again. Great! It's already proved itself as being valuable recording another driver almost causing a car accident with me.

Thanks for the review, just ordered the DVR 027 camera you tested - from a guy on ebay and will post a review when I get it. There seems to be a lot of fakes and knock offs, very confusing for the average consumer so be careful folks. In my opinion the standard def cams are a joke so go for an HD version and the one I got was around $60 - DVR027 I believe. Thanks again for nice review and hopefully you can test the higher end version like the Lukas HD.

Did you happen to check on the usefullness of the ev settings? I just bought the d027 and can't seem to see any difference, although I haven't played around with it that much. Also, the cam's auto iris precipitates an annoying flicker, as it tries to adust it's aperture setting when driving in bright sunlight to shade, and vice versa. I'm going to play around with adding a hood to the cam to see if that helps.

Wish I had seen this video before I bought my camera. I did a good amount of research and almost wound up with a knock off. The model numbers are hardly mention when these are being sold as you mentioned. I got lucky and wound up with a DVR- 027 model. But having seen this video first would have saved me a lot of time trying to find out which one I should get. Great Comparison of the video footage too.

Really excellent reviews, I want a dvr-027 now but looks like they're almost discontinued. I wonder if you can get a better camera these days for 30$ than the dvr-027 ?

+shodanxx They keep getting better and they all eventually fall in price. Can you imagine how much these same cameras would have cost 20 years ago if they existed? Back then digital cameras were expensive and still had awful picture quality. They have come a very long way over the years and they keep getting cheaper.

Nice comparison review. I ordered #5 for $18.00 on Amazon, with free shipping, but cancelled when I decided I needed better video quality. I wound ordering #4 for about $45.00 on eBay. I initially will use it to record my dogs, since one is possibly having seizures when I'm not around. Easier than setting up the laptop and web cam.

This is by far the best review you will watch. Great job! I have 1 question. For some reason I cannot transfer the files form my camera onto my computer. My USB port refuses to recognize this camera. I have tried on 3 different laptops and i get the same msg. stating it doesn't recognize it (unknown device) also order another camera thinking maybe the first camera was defected. Same thing again. I have the DVR-047 Model. So, can these files be transferred onto my computer? Thank You

I noticed in the comments that alot of people are buying the DVR-027 model on ebay. Make sure you get the right one. I noticed that alot of sellers are selling the DVR-047 and selling it as the DVR-027. I almost made that mistake. Remember the only way to tell is the hdmi connection next to the usb connection. By the way, I love my 027. Already saved me from a woman who backed into me and said I rear ended her. She was cited for "providing false information" after the cop looked at the video.

Crap.. I just purchased the DVR-047 thinking it was the DVR-027. Seller on ebay had it listed as HD. I paid $15 for it and that included shipping. For $15 the thing works fine.. if I paid $60 would have been pissed.

two questions. The 207 manufacture claims no gaps between files. Has there been a recent firmware update that corrected this? Have you tested the camera out of the car in darkness? IE use in in the attic to see there are critters. My interest comes from the type of sensor the cameras use. Some are more IR sensitive than others. I wonder if they are using the same sensor in units with and without the IR LEDs.

got a rip-off of the dvr-027, the box said it records in hd but only upscales 640 x 480 to 720p. should I just leave it to the vga(640x480) mode? or just deal with the joke time 720p recording?

What about their power consumption?, I'm interested in the 027 model. Can the car battery survive a day or two of loop video with the engine off? When the memory is full and motion detect mode is enabled the old videos are erased or the camera stop recording? I'm sorry about some many question, I'm new on this.

+RDCST I haven't tested the power consumption but I remember from other calculations it should last over a day before draining your battery 50%. However in winter climates your car may not start up. I'm not an expert in these matters however. I would take a look at getting a battery pack which is a combination voltage cutoff (preventing your battery from draining too far) and storage battery. If you want to keep everything you would need to disable loop recording. No problems RDCST. Thanks for asking.

I do have a question on the hd model number 4 the night shot you state its not as blown out but I did notice you had the IR lights on how does it look with out in in the rain same or will it over expose it?

I purchased a h198a on dinodirect and got the HD camera which is 1280 x 720. It's a good camera, however when I ordered another I got the standard def model and it was garbage. I hope you get the good HD version.

for the DVR-047 which charing port are u suppose to plug in the outside one or the one inside cause mine, when i start the car it doesn't seem to be recording

I used to have the #5 camera. The screw in the mount was too small, so I had to use loctite to actually fix it to the mount. The screws were getting loose every day or so, and the screen burned out after 2 weeks. #4 looks good though, but i'm scared to get it because because it is the same shape as #5 and probably has same mount problems.

Andrew I just purchased a mediasonic cam at shoppers drugmart when I got it home and started to do the settings I found the printing soooooooo small I had to use a maginifing glass to read them follow their instructions I could not get to set the date/time stamp or figure out how to retrieve the info I want. what am I doing wrong?

Some sellers will not list it as a DVR-027. But look closely at the auction. If it does not show HDMI port in the photos and does not show HDMI Output as a feature then you can bet it is the DVR-047

Hey, I actually just received it. The DVR 047 is okay. But I don't know. I don't like the interpolation. So I went ahead and picked up a DVR 027 since I saw such clear videos on KZfaq of it. So I think the 027 is really worth it over the 047. I haven't gotten the 027 yet though but I am expecting it to be a great dashcam.

I bought #4. My battery lasts only 8minutes or so then dies. I put it on my bike. In my car with the lighter plug , no problem. Is it a bad battery or do you recommend a different battery?

I got the 027 after watching this. What's program do you use to splice the files together or just simply play back on your PC? I use windows media player, but there is a annoying delay every 2secs or so. Thanks.

Can you tell me where the reset hole is on the DVR-047? The booklet says it has one ("DVR will restart after press Reset Hole gently by diameter less that 1mm column") but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks!

Have you had any issues with the camera saving clips to the SD card when it's not supposed to? I have it set to 5min and it keeps saving the clip to the SD card after every 5min and it's not supposed to. I've tried two different SD cards and it does the same thing with both. I believe it's the DVR-027

+The Adequate Gamer That is one of the reasons I stay away from the cheapest cameras. They may be cheap for a reason and I want a reliable one that I don't have to worry about failing at that critical moment that could cost me a fortune or my house or everything that I own. I have a Cobra CDR 820 and it has a nasty habit of turning off randomly and unexpectedly. It has failed me for the last time!! It is going on eBay as an auction listed **AS-IS** with a quick note about the turning off unexpectedly. The culprit seems to be the power cord that comes with it because the one for my Garmin GPS has not failed nearly as many times. I should note that in my auction that trying a different cord may have fixed most of the unexpected on and off but still **AS-IS** and no warranties of any sort and no tech support from me.

Cool review. I have camera number 5 and so far it works great. The night vision does not work at all for driving at night. It might be useful if you want to use it have a nice vision security basic camera as long as you leave it charging because the battery does not last at all it seems as if it never charges 100 percent. my two gigabyte memory card give me about one hour record time on standard video format.
