The first soldering gun video I posted is the most popular video and I still get a lot of questions about proper use, wattage, type of solder, etc. This video is a complete walkthrough on setting up and using your soldering gun to repair holes in sheet metal.
Here is a list of the products I use,
Solder Gun - amzn.to/30LZDPl
Solder - amzn.to/3lj3yfW
Cleaning Pads - amzn.to/3rNlEt0

Soldering tips have a coating on them which needs to be protected to work the best. Sanding can work to remove excess solder and debris but can also go through the coating. It can be better to clean the tip using flux and a brass solder tip cleaner. Then retin the tip with fresh solder and it should last much longer. There are videos that show this process in detail.

Dutch boy used to make a heavier rosin core solder about the same gauge as u had

For those who say their gun doesn't get hot enough, the reason could be because they are using an extension cord. You would need to use a heavy gauge cord that isn't too long.

Im going to solder a 1/4 inch hole on my car roof from rust... all the rust is out and ive got a temporary acrylic caulking stopper for now... my plan was to tin the area with 95% tin 5% silver solder and a zinc chloride flux, wash with water and baking soda to neutralize the hydrochloric acid, then fill the rest with 60 tin 40 lead solder... thoughts?

Sounds like you know more about solder than I do. As long as all the rust is removed whatever solder you use will work. Silver solder takes more heat to use but is a good choice. I just use plumbers solder due to low melting point and flux is built in. Good luck with your project and thanks for watching

I have a gas tank with a single puncture in it, and I'm looking to repair. Can I do so, using the technique you describe for the bumpers? Or, is there a different type of materials I can use with a soldering gun, to fill the single puncture of the tank? Thank you.

As long as the tank is steel, soldering will work great. Thanks for watching

I use silver bearing solder for metal work

@autobodytrainingsolutions838 3 жыл бұрын
That works too but it usually requires more heat than a soldering gun would produce. You probably use a micro torch to melt your solder. Is this correct?

If my soldering gun is up to 140watts would that be enough? With the same plumbing solder cable

You may not get enough heat out of your gun. The same solder will work but you’ll have to try it out on some scrap sheet metal. From what I read in my comments, people are having a hard time finding solder guns with enough watts. Good luck and thanks for watching

I was going to order the Weller gun but read an abundant amount of negative reviews such as the trigger fails , doesn't reach specified temperature etc... What's your honest opinion on the gun and or reviews I read ? Thanks

I’ve never had an issue with either of my guns but they’re both old. Maybe they were built better than newer models. The replacement tips don’t seem to last as long as they once did. You might have to try another brand. Sorry but that’s the only help I can offer. Thanks for watching

Please carefully read the online manuals for the D550 or D650 models. Contrary to what everybody imagines, you get full power when you pull the trigger half way. You get the lesser power when you pull the trigger all the way. It is not what you expect. Really. From the Weller website for the current D550 model, "When full 260 Watt power is needed, pull the trigger halfway. When medium-high 200 Watt power is needed, pull the trigger fully."

@@petar443 yes, the solid copper wire works better than tips you can buy. they get hotter, faster. keep a few of them premade for easy replacement and solder away!!!
