@@RazorwireReviews Aw, I’m sorry to hear that. I still enjoy watching this video from time to time. Just interesting to see the collection and someone talk about it. It’s also especially nice now to look at to see what is OOP and what isn’t seeing Eureka removed all of the OOP titles from their website. Will also say, so interesting to go back on after getting used to their new releases, aha!

Troll is not a part of the Masters of Cinema series. Eureka release different lines through their label. Eureka Classics, the Masters of Cinema line, etc. Troll is merely a Eureka release, so no numbering :)

I wouldn't quite recommend trying to collect all of them, especially with some of the out of print stuff, but there a few titles that I think are among the best films ever made, so picking up a few might not be the worst idea!

How did you manage to come by the Mizoguchi films if you don't have the box? Absolutely gutted that they can't reissue the set as it's leaving a big hole in my MoC collection. Same applies to #4, 14 and 15 :(
@RazorwireReviews
@RazorwireReviews 6 жыл бұрын
I have the box set, got it just before it went out of print. Yeah some of those earlier OOP titles are incredibly expensive these days! I feel lucky to have been able to get most of them before they rose to silly prices.

Holy crap! This collection is just incredible, I've been following you for a while and I am so impressed you've managed to get them all! I love MoC, it's the staple of my collection - Other than my Arrow box set releases. Pretty much every film has its own amazing merits. La Notte is fantastic! But I love Antonioni, Pasolini's work is also pretty much untouchable. Fellini's work within MoC is very varied, Roma didn't quite cut it for me, after being aware of his style from 8 1/2. One of the releases which really caught me off guard was Wake in Fright, such a stunning film! That Mizoguchi set looks just incredible, very disappointed that by the time I'd found out about MoC it was already out of print... (Much like the Arrow Borowczyk collection). Again massive congrats on this collection! This is beyond awesome! I'm very jealous :D
@RazorwireReviews
@RazorwireReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. Yeah, I think some of those deluxe Arrow sets pretty much top the lot when it comes to UK releases. I was VERY lucky in getting the Mizoguchi set, I have to say. Though, as a collector I have to say I'm jealous you have one of the original dual format Mizoguchi Blu-rays with the booklet! Thanks for leaving your thoughts, I've heard similar sentiments about Wake in Fright from other people. It's such a shame that those excellent box sets have to go out of print all the time, but I guess the limited print run makes it all sustainable. Arrow are sure churning them out...
@SamDavies94
@SamDavies94 7 жыл бұрын
I think that MoC and Arrow are on the same level as far as box set releases go, the only thing is that MoC hardly release any. I have all of them except from Mizoguchi, and the amount of content you get with MoC is incredible; Shoah and Keaton are good examples. Mind you, when Arrow do it right, they deliver, the Fassbinder set is incredible! I managed to pick up Sansho Dayu for around £10 at a local shop, when it was OOP, they obviously didn't know they could have quadrupled the price at the time.

Have a tad more praise for Silent Running. Great central performance from Bruce Dern supported by the best drones ever, important and moving story, inspiring, haunting bitter-sweet ending and Trumball's spaceships rock. I even love Joan Baez getting all dippy-hippy.

I started about a year ago with the plan to start at #1 and collect them all. Was very disappointed early on to find #4 was discontinued and have encountered many other gaps along the way. As it stands now they are discontinuing a lot in the number range I am up to but due to my budget simply have to skip and hope I find a cheap copy one day.

Yes that was even the case for me back five years ago really, especially #4, that seems to have been OOP for a VERY long time. It's always been a grind to get those out of print, discontinued titles!

Use torrents. For example rarbgmirrored.org. Digital preservation is superior to discs that will go obsolete at some point anyway
@olavbjortomt1596
@olavbjortomt1596 2 жыл бұрын
@@Yoni123 Nope (and I know this is reacting to really old comments), don't use torrents, because if you don't buy the blu-rays then Eureka will stop releasing more BDs in the series, which would be a tragedy. And if the discs really are going obsolete (if the format is no longer used or if your blu-rays stop working), THEN you can then digitally preserve them and keep electronic copies.

@RazorwireReviews
@RazorwireReviews 6 жыл бұрын
They eventually run out of the license to release those films under their banner, and then the print run... runs out. You can find anything through eBay, Amazon, forums etc. always a way, even if some cruelly bump up the prices to extortionate amounts.

But in the end succumb and I did buy it. And thoroughly enjoyed the movie. You can indeed tell just how much Laughton loathed working in the family hotel and Roland Young is pretty damn wonderful, especially in his double act with the town "ex-dancer".

Love your videos! I agree with you about "Sunrise"! I also really liked "Metropolis", "The Lost Weekend", also the Fellini movie "Nights of Cabiria" (if you're going to watch a Fellini film, this is it). I've seen Joan of Arc - brilliant but depressing. Another great film is "Flesh and the Devil" with John Gilbert and Greta Garbo! Also, "I Was Born But. . ." a Japanese silent movie. I've never seen "Tabu". Have you seen "Pandora's Box" (with Louise Brooks)? It is really good. "Spione" WAS great! Loved "The Thief of Bagdad" too! Also, if you get a chance, you should see "Way Down East".

Amaracord is probably the place to start re Fellini, however if you start with a MoC release I'd go with Satyricon. Didn't realise Bakumatsu Taiyo-Den had four different titles on it's front cover, they did the same with Cruel Story of Youth (Japanese text, Japanese phonetic, English literal and English usually known as) which I guess covers all bases.
@SamDavies94

I found 8 1/2 an excellent introduction! But Satyricon a very different type of Fellini. Roma is also amazing. I really enjoyed I Clowns too!

Sam Davies I don't like 8 1/2 (runs for the hills...) I forgot La Dolce Vita, though I still think Amaracord is my favourite.

@SamDavies94 7 жыл бұрын
Noooo :D To each their own. It blew me away when I saw it, and I think it gets better with each viewing. I think it's his best film, but I've not seen La Dolce Vita yet. Amarcord is also amazing, but his later work is very different from his earlier films. I've still not seen Nights of Cabiria or La Strada. Satyricon was great but it is so different to 8 1/2 it through me off a little. I Clowns works well as a documentary and I found it very entertaining.

Holy shit indeed! Did you rob a fucking bank!? Magnificent! One of the things I love about the La Planète Sauvage package is that it takes full advantage of an opportunity than so few distributors do: including the score as a separate, track by track option, instead of the usual, very annoying, isolated audio track. And this is a much-coveted score that's very collectable on vinyl. Why doesn't everyone do that? Love Lifeboat. Hitchcock's most undervalued film, in my view. Finally: you haven't seen any Cassavetes or Fellini films? Sort it out, mate. Spend less time robbing banks, more time watching films. ✌️

Congratulations on completely your goal. I have seen approximately 80 of those films. You need to read a little on Pasolini's life and death before you check his films out. Some are considered controversial. Hawks and Sparrows is far underrated IMO. Fellini films are celebrations. After you watch a couple you will know what I mean. I hope your kidding about not knowing of Pacino's work. Enjoy those films.
