Adam and Warren, 2 of the best guys to have in your corner in situations like this. Just turn your games round when its sunny, you will have light for seeing in the back of the cab and it darker at the monitor side. About the paddles, when you opened them up to deoxit them did they have to be put in the same as they came out to keep it calibrated to centre so you get full range on the screen? Fix Power Drift next dude. Love that game.

John . . . Thanks so much for making these videos especially the way they are filmed showing everything, I like the more older arcades you've repaired - The ComputerSpace Videos were excellent and now we've got this series . . This is one of the greatest youtube channels there is! . .

1:34:36 "It goes up to eleven" was popular amongst some amplifier manufacturers IIRC. It suggests a higher volume if the dial goes "up to eleven" instead of just 10.

Hi John. I was thinking about the scratches on the bottom of your machine and I was thinking if the scratches weren't very deep, then you could probably use some 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sand up to a 2000 grit then use some polishing paste you would use on a car to take out the lighter scratches and bring a good shine back, but only around the area where the scratches are. I hope this helps. Great video :)

About the question Shane asked about the Konami harness. I think it's a jamma plus, where you have an extra connector on the PCB for the extra buttons and also included is the extra wires for the second speaker. So if Shane googles (jamma plus plnouts) he will find the wiring diagram he needs for the extra speaker. so he won't have to hack the original jamma harness.

As I recall it was actually by design that the paddles don't reach the absolute upper and lower extremes of the screen. I think that one of the articles at All In For a Quarter or the Golden Age Arcade Historian blog covered that.

Main Event has the standard Jamma speaker pinout, where Simpsons is Stereo out. If you want to do a temporary setup, just use alligator clips. Hot and ground to one speaker, to the Jamma harness on the Main Event board.

as the video quality for the back and inside of the cabinet goes excellent. That glare from the garage door being open on the computer space monitor makes it impossible to see what's on the monitor. All I see are tall trees reflected in the monitor. Garage door closed with two general fill lights would make the front of this cab much easier to see in your video.

In my experience in fixing old audio equipment I've never had any luck with just Deoxit or similar products. I've always just removed and disassembled the pots to clean them by hand. They can develop grooves and collect fine dust and dirt. This method should work well with any old pot on any arcade system as well and I've never had to re-open one of these pots that I've fixed this way. In audio equipment its a lot easier to detect defects in pots as they are adjusted but they aren't adjusted as often as pots on an arcade machine would so the process might still be worth it on older games where pots are used as controls and you have strange movement or scoring issues. Needle nose pliers seem to help when bending the tabs to disassemble the pots. After disassembling the pot I clean them with Deoxit or WD-40 and then carefully wipe the dirt and dust out. Then carefully bend the little tabs on the wiper to the left or right just enough that they don't sit in the normal groove they have likely created on the pad. Before reassembling I put some dielectric grease or Vaseline on the pad to help keep the wipers from creating a new groove too quickly. Once reassembled you just need to slowly work it back and forth to move the grease around and it should be good as new. Just be sure to not use too much grease and turn it slowly as to not build up grease under the wiper tabs. If it builds up under the wiper then it will lose contact but turning it enough times back and forth will correct that and it should be a permanent fix for that. And just note that if you want to be able to turn the pots fast during game play then use less grease or none at all. However, a little bit of grease will help it last a little longer.
@bitrot427 жыл бұрын
Interesting technique. I've always just sprayed contact cleaner and hoped for the best (which seems to be good enough, though not ideal.) If I ever find myself restoring vintage audio gear, I might give that a try.

Awesome! I have a four player pong cocktail table, with speed ball buttons for each player, and adjustable difficulty. The paddle size varies with each difficulty setting, maybe that's why the paddles are so small in space ball? Is there adjustable difficulty pots/pins on board?

John, your arcade basement will never be complete unless you get a Daytona USA twin cabinet.
@VGA_Guy7 жыл бұрын
Last I checked Pong went to 15, not eleven because it uses a 4 bit counter. Nutting's version could be different but if it uses the same hardware, I doubt that. Also the( you probably already know this) TV needs a filter cap changed to remove the wave in the video.

just started watching so I don't know if you found the problem it is 120 Hz hum he is probably right the power supply issue just synced it with my phone it is 120 Hz hun check the main cap to the power supply could be causing 120hz hum. it's a polypropylene capacitor your friend didn't know the type across the mains don't bother using any contact cleaner just use WD-40 especially the abuser they are going to get WD-40 will protect them contact cleaner could make it worse overtime.

@1:50:29 Shane here: Audio out on the simpsons board is dedicated similar to the middle picture in this core0.staticworld.net/images/article/2014/07/fan-connectors-100360901-orig.jpg (very much like a 4 pin mobo fan connector). The harness in the cabinet (which I thought was JAMMA, but it sounds like Konami wires them slightly different) has no leads plugged into where the speaker output is on the main event board (just empty). I don't care if I can only get mono out as that's what the board has. I'm contemplating modifying the harness in the cabinet to have a 4 pin male lead available so that I can plug in my cab's speakers into it for the games that do not have dedicated onboard audio out. I'll take pictures as I progress as I'm pretty sure that'll explain it much better than I can. btw, simpsons and main event are both konami games, all controls/power/video work great(thus I assumed JAMMA), just playing deaf :(

Naww, I wanna see a part 3, please. It's not really all fixed until you rebuild the TV so you get rid of that waviness, adjust the contrast and brightness, adjust the paddles all up, and the clean up that flash, and then replace the paddle knobs. Then replace the power cord and do your buffing/waxing, etc. THEN you're DONE!
@bitrot427 жыл бұрын
It needs some finish work, but at least it's alive now. I think the PCB needs a look, too; there's a visible glitch when the ball hits the edge of the screen, and the serve behavior is a little different from what I've seen in other videos. It would also be nice to be sure if the paddles are really supposed to be that small...

YES, JOHN, I CAN, BUT I THOUGHT YOU ALREADY KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. DIDN'T YOU SAY YOU WERE GOING TO TRY TO GET RID OF THE WAVINESS IN THE TV BY REBUILDING IT (RECAPPING AND RETUBING)? AND WOULDN'T YOU AT LEAST WANT TO TRY TWEAKING THE TV'S CONTRAST AND BRIGHTNESS JUST IN CASE YOU CAN GIVE IT A BETTER CONTRAST (SUCH A SIMPLE THING AND I THOUGHT I HAD SEEN YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT BEFORE)? AND THEN THE REST ARE ALREADY ABOUT AS SPECIFIC AS I CAN MAKE THEM.
